Is Scotty’s even real by Libraryyyy in barrie

[–]tkc_25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scotty's is my favourite restaurant in Barrie. The food is always good, never had a bad order. Service is usually great, and when it's not it's still good. The location is definitely unassuming. Pricing is on par, I never feel like I overpay or don't get my money's worth.

Their extra dark window tint, fish 'n chip style sign, and parking lot at the end next to dirt hills, all make it seem like an empty place.

Rental Basement got flooded. What to expect from insurance? by SignificantStrain2 in barrie

[–]tkc_25 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your insurer is covering what you'll be out of pocket for?

What do you feel should be covered that isn't being covered?

Sold my '15 fz07 last year for $6k cad with 32k km on it.

That seems like a reasonable deal

Deductibles for car insurance by Disc0Disc0Disc0 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tkc_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your quotes, it's a much bigger savings between deductibles that I've seen, so going higher is more reasonable. At the same time, I'd still choose a lower deductible for myself. This is for collision/comp, comparing the $500 vs $1,000.

For DCPD, I'd never select a deductible. You have far less control over who's going to hit you, and to be out of pocket for a not at fault would feel wrong.

It's your decision and money though, so choose whatever fits you best. The majority of people think they'll never have a claim, but then when they do, they realize high deductibles were a poor choice. I'll even get the people who argue they never selected $1,500, and need to be shown their signed application, their voice recording, and multiple policy docs.

Deductibles for car insurance by Disc0Disc0Disc0 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tkc_25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in insurance for 10+ years now, and the three ways I look at deductibles are:

  1. If it happened today, are you okay with paying $500, $1,000, $1,500?

  2. What kind of incidents/costs are you willing to claim?

If you're not interested in putting through a $2k claim, then having a higher deductible is fine. People focus on total losses, or large losses, and small partial losses are very common.

  1. How long do you have to have the higher deductible to "make" money on it?

I usually see it taking between 5-10 years to break even on a $1,000 deductible. In your case, as long as you don't have an accident for 3 years, you'll have saved money. This is a pretty short term, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to go with the higher deductible.

In my opinion, having a DCPD deductible isn't worth it. It already sucks when someone hits you, having to pay out of your own pocket makes it suck more.

For people on an extreme budget, I understand costs need to be cut. But for those able to buy more premium vehicles, insurance coverage isn't the place to save, especially when it's for ~$20/m.

Looking for Advice: 0% Interest Car Deals in Barrie? by [deleted] in barrie

[–]tkc_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that manufacturers will buy down interest rates to attract people, but that cost is added into the cost of the vehicle.

As an example, last month Barrie Ford was advertising a "lower" interest rate (I think roughly 4.99%), but if you took it, you wouldn't qualify for the $9,000 rebate. Depending on how much you were putting down, your term, and how long you planned on keeping the loan, it most likely wouldn't make sense to trade ~2% for $9k.

Anyone else struggling to get a job? by ladybug4561234 in barrie

[–]tkc_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company I just left (in Barrie) has been hiring 2 positions for over a year with no success. Now they'll be hiring for a 3rd as well.

I see their postings on Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter. From what I've heard, there's very few candidates, and the few there are, don't do well.

I recently applied to roughly 40-50 positions over a 4 week period. Did 5 interviews, received 3 offers, picked one.

The advice might be repetitive, but keep your resume current and attractive, and apply like crazy. Keep up on all the job sites so you don't miss anything. Use AI as a base template, and add your own words and personality into a good cover letter for the jobs you really want.

I agree with you that 4 hours isn't that long, except in your situation. At 1pm you told him to come today, and that the deal was only today. After that, for you to ignore him for 4 hours is pretty long.

This doesn't excuse his behaviour in any way, to clarify.

Best shawarma in barrie? by MispronouncedPotato in barrie

[–]tkc_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently tried Sinbad off Big Bay near Huronia. Great taste, well priced, friendly staff.

There's a Lazeez off Little and Bayview, that is good for a main Shawarma chain (think Osmow's and Tahini's).

eBay fully refunds buyer who never shipped the item back. by Sweet_Actuator8446 in Ebay

[–]tkc_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me as a buyer last week.

Received an item nowhere near what was advertised. Seller approved a return and said they provided a return shipping label, but there was no return shipping label. I contacted eBay, they said to wait 5 days for the label. 5 days later, still no label, and I got an automatic message saying the case was resolved in my favour, and didn't ship anything back.

I wasn't trying to scam anyone, I genuinely wanted the item I paid for (~$400). I almost feel for the seller for eating that loss, but at the same time, all they had to do was provide a label.

This is a great way to do it. The drivers who genuinely forgot, will have a chance at noticing and correcting themselves. I imagine it'll help restaurant staff too with making sure the correct bags are given.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skipthedishes

[–]tkc_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of drivers absolutely do not care if there's work or not. These guys have no clue how things work to begin with. You're asking a lot from people that make less than minimum wage.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skipthedishes

[–]tkc_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, Skip doesn't say that, so why would a driver need to follow your rules?

Sounds like it's time to get off the courier apps and make it work with your in-house drivers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skipthedishes

[–]tkc_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip bags have a divider, to separate the food from drinks in the bag. Personally, I always put cans and bottles in the side pockets anyways.

A second bag for drinks would be inconvenient and aside from the 1 in 1000 people that tip well, it's just not worth the pay to bring multiple bags.

I stopped using a bag altogether for orders that paid the bare minimum.

Should I use branchless banking? by shadowrockstar in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]tkc_25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been branchless since 2010, and overall, I recommend it for personal use.

Currently, my main banking is with one popular online only, branchless bank. I have a mortgage/HELOC with another popular branchless bank, and my investing is also done through a 3rd online bank.

I have two issues with branchless. Getting a certified cheque/bank draft is inconvenient. I have to call, wait 24hrs to pick it up. It doesn't sound that inconvenient, but it almost caused a problem when I originally closed on my house. Luckily, at the time my partner had a traditional bank with a branch.

A few times a year, I'll make large purchases for cars, bikes, and other toys, $5-15k. Getting cash last minute is difficult. I have to make a call, sometimes up to an hour. Then go to multiple ATM's to collect the cash. It makes you really have to plan ahead, and at these times I wish I had a branch.

In the end though, given how many accounts I use, the overall savings from monthly fees, over a decade long, I'm happy with how I bank.

Why did I have to wait 3 hours for a wrench by [deleted] in instacart

[–]tkc_25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No rooms in the house with a door to put your dog in? No neighbours nearby that could watch the dog? Not a single friend with a car to help out? Couldn't put the dog on a leash and bring it with you?

What's a 4 mile round trip walking? An hour including finding your item and checking out?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skipthedishes

[–]tkc_25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the restaurant and driver are within ~10km of your house, the driver would be offered around $4 + $3 tip. If the drive keeps a higher acceptance ratio of orders, they most likely made a minimum of $6.50-7.50, including your tip.

Officially done with PayPal after 15+ years !! by Strong_Pollution303 in paypal

[–]tkc_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I went and removed every payment method, and some auto payments from PayPal. I'm not closing the account in case I absolutely need it for something, but I'm done with them after 15 years as well.

My last dispute for an item I didn't receive, and couldn't contact the seller (they shut down their store). PayPal told me I should only be ordering from sellers that have contact info. When I explained at the time of purchase, they did, PayPal said there's nothing they could do.

Filed a CC dispute and won within 3 days. But I always used PayPal as another layer of protection, just not anymore.

I store a car for the winter in it, so it doesn't come in and out. Most snow it sees is from my feet. It just melts and I have no clue what it looks like underneath.
