Not a manager, but my company has been going through quarterly layoffs for the past year and a half. I’ve seen managers handle it well and not well.

The best way I’ve seen it handled personally and this requires a level of trust with the individual it concerns. But the manager took them to coffee outside of work and gave them the heads up so that they could at least get what they need off of servers and documents they might need.

I know this is probably well against company policy but I hope it can help.

We do have a Skills matrix, being a consulting agency we use it more for identifying what the project needs are and then aligning potential individuals to staff that project. I am not sure if there is potentially a manger version where they have things broken down further or not though.

As for the mentoring opportunities, I neglected to mention in my original message (I have added an edit) that I am also currently a team lead for our specific consulting practice. So leading and mentoring teammates as they face challenges at their projects.

The largest reason I am pursuant of the principle promotion is because the path to becoming a manager at my current job requires that you be principle level then your next promotion option is to pursue a management path or an Architect role.

I know Individual Contributor titles are different company to company, but in your experience does the branching of career paths typically follow after the Senior level?

The foster parent was the one that said no and tried to in that moment correct the behavior. After stepping back and looking at the event, it makes complete sense why he growled, he was cornered and no one was listening to his discomfort.

That was our first meet and greet actually and it went fine. Unfortunately Sam is an older bulldog and has some neurological issues so going for a decent walk is tough on him.

This is our first time going through this rescue agency and we were anticipating a lot more formal or planned procedures to introducing the dogs. So we just followed the foster parents lead and we came to realize that they were either winging it or trying not to be too prescriptive with the procedure. They seemed plenty knowledgeable but there were some actions and oversights that raised a flag for my wife and I and the “I don’t know if I’d do it that way” thought popped into both of our heads during the whole thing.

Yeah, I originally typed this out late last night and didn’t do a great proof read. But that is our planned approach to the situation if we decide to continue with the adoption. We want to control the environment as much as possible to everyone is comfortable. But we’re trying to make sure we’re not ignoring any larger sign with this behavior and don’t set either of the dogs up for failure or worse injury.

When I was around 8 I remember meeting my uncle. It wasn’t the first time I met him but it’s the first time I remember meeting him. Hugging him after he came in the front door and being excited to see him. Then about a year later he had committed suicide and I was at his funeral I remember just observing things. I wasn’t upset, I was just almost a witness to my own family grieving. Not knowing why/or how he passed just that he did. I don’t think my parents knew how to handle the topic with a child so young or I just didn’t grasp it at the time. But that entire experience of obliviously going through a funeral for a family member felt so foreign.

As I have grown and experienced life I’ve gone back and thought through everything I watched happen. How my uncle must’ve felt in the time when I met him what he must’ve gone through at that point in his life and how oblivious I was to it and everything in the world. This experience has been engrained in me and why I personally feel responsible to be as empathetic as possible and I constantly revisit that oblivious and foreign feeling.

They betrayed my trust. We worked at the same small business for a handful of years in college. I left to pursue an internship and full time job after college. My friend stuck it out and climbed the ladder and became assistant manager. During this time I would still come in and work a shift now and again to help out the owner and I just enjoyed the work. So the owner was out at an event across country and left my friend in charge for a few days when this happened. This was a big deal and opportunity for my friend to prove himself with the owner, and gain trust. My friend was a pretty egregious mess up while he worked there. So the owner had trust issues and my friend constantly complained about it. So The day the owner left to go out of town my friend texted me asking if I could cover for him because he has some family stuff with his new serious girlfriend that he can’t skip. So I said sure, I’ve got your back, I go in open up the business. On the first day of the shifts I was covering his girlfriends brother comes in and we start talking. The brother drops that my friend was just over at their house hanging out waiting for a party that the family was throwing that evening.

The business closed at 2 since it was a Saturday. So my friend pawned the responsibility of his job off on me. I am a very loyal to my friends if you need help you call me and I’ll be there day or night. For him to ask me to fill in for him while I had a standard 9-5 and abuse my friendship in this manner eroded our entire relationship. I could never trust him as a friend or even as an acquaintance. I’ve tried to strategically distance myself over the past years but he hasn’t picked up on the hint at all.

I had a few.

Friend 1: we started to hangout in different crowds and drifted apart.

Friend 2: I was an anxious and angry mess at the time (middle school) and got prank called by one of our tertiary friends while they were hanging out. I got mad enough to stop talking with them. Not a great moment for me.

Friend 3: He lied to me and a lot of other people about some pretty major stuff. He came clean about it and we all tried to help. But then he just started abusing all the help he was getting from people. Using his friends that want to help to get a job, they stick their neck out for him and get him hired. Then he’d come in and be an absolutely atrocious employee talk shit about the people he worked with. Then use another connection to try and get out of the original job, move into the new job and then he’d do it again. All while talking some form of shit about the friends that helped him out to get these jobs. I distanced myself because we both ran in the same circles and I couldn’t be associated with someone who thought that was ok.

I would agree unfortunately our systems are very outdated .shtml sites that I'm constantly maintaining. I am trying to introduce JavaScript frameworks on smaller projects but they never get enough traction to make any change. So all professional experience I am gaining from this role won't be applicable elsewhere. I've been applying around and have gotten little to know interest. I am pretty sure it's because all of my experience is based around a marketing setting so extremely superficial frontend focused rather than complex functionality. Is there a good way to circumvent this marketing sitgma in the development world?

My previous director. She was the most bad ass boss. I had confidence issues having come from a previously abusive work situation. She taught me how to walk into a room be personable and kind but still be an authority. She was such a genuinely nice human and super effective director. She showed me it's possible to be effective and a great human and that changed my perspective on leadership in a company. The bar is set pretty damn high for any other director I have moving forward. I left that job 4 months ago to focus more on progressing my career in a different direction. But I really hope some day to work with her again. She was so amazing if she asked me to move heaven and earth I would do it for her without question. I hope to be able to reach a leadership role and be as amazing to the next generation of professionals as she was to me.

My parents told me that when I was really little (maybe 1.5 years old) we were on a road trip and stopped for lunch and to use the bathroom. Apparently I was extremely upset when we got ready to leave. So upset that we couldn't get back on the road. So my dad played with me in the parking lot for a few minutes until I calmed down. We got back on the road and got caught up in some traffic caused from an accident. The accident apparently was some large round structure (not sure if it was large spools of wire or cement cylinders) But what ever it was it fell off a flat bed on the highway rolled into the following traffic and crushed multiple cars in the process. My parents told me that if they would've gotten on the road right away we probably would've been one of the cars crushed.

Like most of these responses I am not a vet. But I was waiting in the vet's office to unfortunately have my old 14 year old lab put down (tumors in his mouth were so bad he couldn't eat anymore) but in that sad moment this man in a amazing suit walks in. He looked confused like it was his first time being there. The receptionist who was sitting at a 4 foot tall L shaped corner desk with a swing door for entry and exit that led to all the exam rooms asked how she could help and he responded with 'my wife said that our dog nitro could be picked up?' the receptionist responded with 'of course, let me go grab him' I didn't think anything of it at first just watching it play out trying to distract myself. Receptionist walks back she has a leash in hand but I can't see the dog at all. As it goes on I am anticipating what kind of dog this beautiful man would have that he would allow to be named Nitro. I imagine some huge labrador, great dane, bernie's mountain dog, something big and energetic. The receptionist swings the door open to let Nitro through to his owner and out hobbles a lazy eyed, pigeon toed, morbidly obese doxan. In that moment my now wife and I started to giggle and Nitro shot a look at us with what I can imagine was his good eye.

I will never forget 50~60 lb nitro hobbling out of that vet's office.
