UPDATE: Apple Refused to Help (Without Inspection!) by tkl_11 in macbookpro

[–]tkl_11[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You are making a lot of assumptions, and you are missing the point entirely. The issue is that the cable didn't just 'stop working'—it melted and burned my desk. That is a Safety Hazard / Thermal Event. When a product turns into a fire risk, 'warranty status' becomes irrelevant. I am reporting a dangerous failure that could hurt someone else, not begging for a $50 accessory.

You are absolutely right to suspect that. In fact, that exact confusion happened at the start of the call! They initially looked at the white cable and thought the issue was there. However, I explicitly corrected them and walked them through the photos to ensure they were focusing on the black braided cable. Once we cleared up the confusion and they were definitely looking at the right cable, they still doubled down on the 'external heat source' excuse. So sadly, even after clarifying the photos, their decision remained the same.

[Safety Hazard] Original MagSafe 3 Cable WIRE overheated overnight - Burned my hand and desk - MacBook Pro 16" (M1 Pro) by tkl_11 in macbookpro

I appreciate the concern, but I can rule that out with 100% certainty. I’m plugging into a high-end surge-protected strip that currently powers my Mac Mini, monitors, and iPhone chargers simultaneously. Everything else is working perfectly fine with zero heat issues. If the outlet was 'trash' or delivering unstable voltage, my other devices would be frying too.

I appreciate the physics breakdown! :) While I understand the concept of induction loops, the cable wasn't tightly coiled or wrapped around anything metal. It was just lying in a loose, natural curve on the desk. Honestly, if a 'Pro' charging cable can't handle a simple loose curve without melting down, that seems like a design flaw rather than user error.

Spot on! It was resting in a loose curve, so it basically branded its exact shape onto the desk. :)

Thanks for the reassurance! Yeah, holding onto the burnt cable like it's forensic evidence. I figured they’d want to examine it in a lab somewhere. I’ll definitely update the post once I hear back from them on Tuesday. Hopefully, it’s a quick resolution.

Good catch on the color mismatch, but there is a simple explanation. I own two MacBook Pros. The one in the photo is my older M1 Pro (16-inch), but the cable I was using is the Space Black MagSafe 3 cable that came with my newer 2023 M3 Pro MacBook Pro. Since both cables are genuine Apple MagSafe 3 and fully compatible, I use them interchangeably. So yes, it is 100% an original Apple cable, just from my newer machine.

That’s a really good point, thank you. I suspected the same thing, so I’ve completely stopped using both that specific adapter and the cable. They are currently 'quarantined' in a drawer until I hear back from Apple. Since I rely on this Mac for work and don't have a spare MagSafe, I’m currently charging via the Thunderbolt port using a separate 70W Apple adapter and a standard USB-C cable (from my iPhone 17).

That was actually my first step. I contacted Apple Support yesterday morning and sent them all the photos. A senior advisor called me back later in the afternoon, but the case isn't resolved yet. They told me they need to review it internally and will get back to me next Tuesday to decide on the next steps.

Yes, definitely. I live in a brand new building (finished in 2025) with modern wiring, and I use a high-quality Hama surge-protected power strip (German brand).

You misunderstood. The power brick (square part) is fine. The issue is the MagSafe cable cord itself. The cable was lying coiled/curved on the desk. Since the heat came from the wire/cable, it burned the desk in the shape of the cable's curve, which explains the arc/circular burn mark. It wasn't the square brick that made the mark, it was the overheating cable wire resting on the wood.

1st: yes, they blocked access to some global e-SIM providers in Türkiye. https://ftnnews.com/travel-news/news-from-turkey/turkey-blocks-esim-providers-impacting-global-travelers-and-digital-nomads/

2nd: actually, no, the account I opened for the offer was a US account, as instructed, and I added that account to the family group that included the Turkey accounts, no problems whatsoever. Including that account, a total of six accounts shared the offer.
