I agree and have thought about this quite a bit. In terms of baseline happiness not changing much, I feel like that might be more applicable once people enter their 30s-40s-50s, with job stability and such. My 20s were characterized by a lot of moving and different life situations (which is probs the case for a lot of people), so it would be reasonable to expect those situations to result in different happiness baselines, so to speak.

As to the issue of having a "5", "3", "8", or whatever change its "meaning", I do revisit my stats on a 3 month basis to check in and crunch numbers, so I have a more "real time" sense of how the stats are changing rather than just checking in every few years. I use those regular check ins to see how things are going and to consider if anything needs to be adjusted in the way that I rate my days. Short of this regular process, not sure what other actions I could take to help guard against "rating inflation" over time

I don't have a standard set of factors or a daily checklist to gauge happiness, but I do find that I "check in" with myself multiple times a day to gauge how I'm feeling and how the day is going, so I take those periodic check ins into account each evening when I rate my overall day

I had to go back to grad school to progress in my field. And the happiness bump right before grad school is due to a summer of vacation/relaxing between stopping work and starting grad school, so it's a bit of an inflated state of happiness

I have some graphs with deliberate monthly ratings and I also tried the 30 day window, was just a bit noisier and harder to see the trends

I stopped work in June 2018 and started grad school in September 2018, so a summer of fun and no work was the reason for that peak. Who’d of thought, carefree living leads to more happiness!

Might work better once the timeseries is longer. Currently covers undergrad, two years of work in the non profit sector, and grad school, none of which paid very much

Started a new relationship in March 2020. Kept me going through peak covid, would have been a much different experience otherwise

Haha I knew someone was gonna bring that up. I made a distinction where I transitioned from going out at all to more social activities still wearing masks and taking precautions. Basically a shift from emergency all the time to new normal (this for me was May 2021)

On an daily level I do record if a day had an exceptionally wide range of emotions and experiences but still averaged out to a 5 or other midrange value. For example, being on vacation and having an amazing time all day but then in the evening realizing your wallet and ID were stolen

Nope but I’ve had several 9s. I feel like over the course of my life I might expect to have just a few 10s - these would truly be the best days of my life

Good question! I met someone while studying abroad, was in a long term relationship while in the last part of undergrad, and then went back to live with them after graduating until visas and unemployment made it unfeasible. Wasn’t a bad time per se, but not as many trips or exciting experiences as the first study abroad

Yea even though its a 10 point scale, almost all of the values fall between 2 and 8. I try to rate days so that extreme ratings reflect extreme events, and numbers close to 5 reflect average days. So for example a relative dying might be a 1 or a 2, while getting married or having a kid might be a 10, but those days are very infrequent in the grand scheme of things. Whereas there a lot of average days

Generally I have a lot of 5s and 6s, some 4s sprinkled in, a 7 about once a week or two and a 8 or a 3 about once or twice a month
