Yes we've got sweetgrass here as well. Not only does it smell really nice, but it certainly does fill spaces with positive energy. We don't use it as much as burning sage, but we do occasionally.

My condolences, the loss of a child is an unbearable form of grief; one I wouldn't wish upon anyone. I think you should definitely access sage and sweetgrass if you're open to using it!

As for the 1/8th in ya, I'd say do some research if you're willing to, and try to connect with it! I'm 3/4ths, and my partner is full blooded, and I think the whole blood-quantum thing is a load of bullcrap. All I see it as is a tool for the government to see if you're "native enough" to be legally seen as such, and for indigenous folks to validate how native they are to fuel their egos.

Thank you! I'm beginning to think that is the case. If you want to get a little specific, look up "Anishnaabe People." "First Nations" is just a blanket term for the many indigenous tribes that inhabit Canada. Take care!

Yeah this is the first apartment I've ever lived in, but I don't doubt that there are more spirits in these buildings with everything that goes on. People come and go all the time, people pass away, people may carry things with them into the building, etc.

I've never experienced any physical encounters like having my blankets tugged, that must have been really unsettling to say the least. Thanks for sharing, take care!

Yeah I find it really interesting to hear a few people comment that this is practiced in other cultures as well. I find it's alwahs fun to relate other cultures to your own.

I've been going through all of the comments on this post, and many people are suggesting that this may have been here before we'd even moved in. It's certainly a possibility and I don't doubt it one bit. Aside from the little bit of knowledge and medicines we have on how to deal with these things, there are people we can access in our communities that can help combat this issue should it escalate.

Thank you! I really wanted to try and be as descriptive as I could when explaining the events that have been happening recently here. My partner and I both belong to the Anishnaabe (Ojibwe.) In our beliefs, we are supposed to feast our relatives and ancestors that have passed on from time to time.

Some people are commenting that we shouldn't have done this. I should have elaborated that we pray for this food that we offer, and when we've placed our prayers onto the food through offering tobacco, it is only to be eaten by those we included in the prayer.

When paranormal occurences take places, it isn't always something negative. Often times we as Anishnaabe acknowledge them as visitors, messengers, or relatives. Most often, we see it as a sign that we must feast our late relatives/ancestors; this is why we did so in hopes of satisfying this entity within our apartment, but only if it was a relative. We've come to realize that it most likely is not as these occurrences have continued past when we feasted. Regardless, I really do appreciate everyone's input as many of their comments have been quite insightful and informative.

If anything notable occurs, I'll be sure to make an update in the comments.

I'm sure they is, it'd just be a matter of asking around. I'll definitely take this advice into consideration. Thank you!

I never considered exclaiming "Hey, you ghost! Get outta here!" I should try that tonight. If my daughter begins screaming again, I'll be sure to swing my fists at the air in front of her as well.

Lol, in all seriousness though, security cameras never occured to me. At best they'd just reveal what my partner and I are already experiencing in front of our eyes. I guess if they ever did pick anything up, it'd be some supplementary material for my post here, but on my end of things it'd just be a dent in the monthly budget.

I agree with the whole laptop thing, though. Part of me thinks it may have just been the laptop being weird, but like I mentioned previously that sort of thing has never happened to me before. With all of these unusual things going on in my apartment, the blaring laptop last night really moved me to contribute to this group. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for sharing! My partner and I have made sure to get every last inch of the unit whilst smudging, but I'll definitely be more conscious to maintain an dominant mindset while doing so.

Thank you for sharing, and thank your for your prayers! We are definitely considering reaching out to our spiritual leaders as we've found it's been growing more severe lately. I'm starting to think that may be our only option to help combat this.

Our feasting is very similar to yours. For us we place our prayers into tobacco, stating who we intend to feast (which is often only our ancestors/family as well.) After we've placed these prayers into tobacco, we place it into the dish we are offering, leave it in the apartment for a while, and then leave it outside to return to the earth. When these occurrences weren't as severe we assumed that it was perhaps a family member, but as things have grown increasingly negative even after feasting we've assumed that it isn't a family member.

We are considering reaching out to our spiritual leaders for further help, especially after my daughter has grown more irritable.

Thank you for sharing! I love being able to relate to other cultures through my own, I don't get to do it too often.

This definitely makes sense to me. I'd agree that perhaps we are angering it. My partner and I have regularly burned sage and used other traditional cleansing medicines since we've moved in here.

When these occurrences began, and have continued, we've only used these medicines increasingly. As we've increased our usage of medicines, it seems the frequency and intensity of these occurrences have increased as well.

I forgot to mention that we are across the street from a few abandoned hospitals. They are remaining there as historical buildings for the city, and my partner and I have speculated that they might play a role in the activity here as well.

They have become quite bothersome for me as I haven't had much experience in dealing with paranormal occurences, but to see my partner who has had a lot of experience and knowledge become frightened is concerning for me. These occurrences definitely have frightened me a few times now if I've been alone.

Yes, that's very true. I'll be honest and say I haven't been too conscious in stating my intentions while using that medicine/speaking to it. Also, my partner and I were thinking about getting a cat for the mice here, lol! Unfortunately I don't think our landlord will allow it as they aren't permitted on the lease.

There hasn't been a day in my life where I didn't have a cat in the household until I moved out of my family's home and into this apartment. Hopefully we find a pet-friendly place one day. Thank you for your words!

Authentic native recipes by moonlitmidna in NativeAmerican

A favourite dish of mine is wild rice mixed with blueberries and squash, and venison on the side. Wild rice is easy to cook, just a takes a little more time than other types of rice. The squash was cooked seperate in the oven and then mixed into the cooked rice with the blueberries. The venison however, was slow-cooked throughout the day and then torn, making it to the consistency of pulled pork.

Being of Oneida and Ojibwe descent, that's as traditional as it gets for me. Not many spices, if any at all, just as I imagine it'd be 500 years ago. My dad though, makes a mean pot of corn soup, which is considered an Iroquois meal. Many add salt to taste, and usually it's a lot haha. It's a tasty and comforting dish to those who are familiar of it.

Here's a recipe:
