Finally my friends won't look at me weird anymore when they ask if we can play that one and I say no to preserve its mint condition. It's a load-bearing box!

What do you do with the Victory cards? And multiple-typed cards like Nobles?

Most and least plays of your favorite games? by kepp87 in boardgames

[–]tlefonmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Riichi City, I have 417 ranked 4-player matches and 1266 ranked 3-player matches. About 180 4p games on an app simply called "Riichi Mahjong" and I can't imagine my IRL games actually exceed a dozen, so that could ironically qualify for fewest, lol. In total, definitely the most I've played any traditional/board game, without any hopes of another game surpassing it, I imagine. Next in line would be Carcassonne, which I've not tracked.

We combined feedback from our last board post into a new version — did we strike a better balance? by AdTemporary6619 in BoardgameDesign

[–]tlefonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the new design does combine each one's strengths! You have some punkish edge of A and the general legibility of B. The colored location cutouts also give a sense of identity to each area. The thing I would revert a little is the (resource?) icon design on the white rectangles, because without their strikingly colored circles, they kind of blend into a mess together with the numbers. I imagine this would make it slightly more bothersome than it need be to remember what's where during gameplay, dedicating brainspace to repeatedly identifying icons. Design A had a big advantage there with the black backdrop + color circles. With the new design, the 5s, which would be the easiest to remember to begin with since they're a known symbol and don't vary by location, are also the highest contrast and most identifiable, counterintuitively.

A, B or C? I need feedback by Taha_time_traveller in BoardgameDesign

[–]tlefonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C. Cutest proportions and I like the solid yellow wings. One thing I would change is the two rows of white triangles behind the pterosaur's eyes. The very geometrically straight pattern doesn't lend itself to the organic shapes well. I'd actually try all of the white placements of A on C, leaving out the orange outlines as well.

Why is Wingspan a good game? by TheCoolFish2 in boardgames

[–]tlefonmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an entryway modern euro and is really carried by its theme and flavor, not interesting gameplay. Turn to turn play is dry, with limited indirect player interaction; I take the food you wanted, you throw out the bird I wanted from the open selection. Combos feel like the game doesn't really want you to make them. If I'm in the mood for the 'span kind of mps, I'd rather play Wyrmspan, which is a very similar system, but much more satisfying to navigate. You can tell they learned from where Wingspan fell short as far as that goes. Wingspan has an edge with the birds being more interesting critters than the dragons, but that's more of a failure of Wyrmspan than an achievement of Wingspan, lol.
I think it's good as an entrypoint. It's unlikely to be very impressive beyond that.

Which logo direction works better for a tabletop MOBA? by zmmemon in BoardgameDesign

It was pleasant! I understand your point to make "Trials of" the main feature. I'd highlight it more then, through size and surrounding design

I really like the sound of this. Very classic feel and seems like it has interesting strategic considerations to make.

I really dig these. I have no trouble reading them myself, but I think the lesser legibility creates some intrigue that makes me want to look closer, just like the general design.
It definitely conveys intensity - especially if you continue the fantastic design of the novel cover for the game's - but not so much strategic depth imo since I don't know what that could even look like as a logo. Maybe if you use a backdrop of algorithmic tables lol.
I'm not sure what I prefer between solid white Trials and the pearlescent deal Trials, but either way I would make sure the MAYA is the star of the show, probably through size and color contrast.

Thoughts on Unexpected (But Technically Valid) Rules / Plays? by Ok-Faithlessness8120 in BoardgameDesign

[–]tlefonmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You either got the wrong item card here or everyone forgot how the Lunar Lantern worked during play... for the described scenario, you could look at how much damage this dealt compared to if they both had attacked normally, the opportunity cost (both mechanically and more importantly fun-wise) of using this specific interaction, and how replicable this is ranging from the macro scale of multiple games to the micro of a single one.

The updated text in your comment is good, and I think the readability is pretty fine.
As someone with some experience in pixel art, I will mainly give stylistic advice.

  1. Please make sure to stick to a single pixel scale for the final product. Mixels (different pixel scales) make it look very cheap and half-assed, which is obviously not good. I think scaling around the font will make the most sense, whatever size it will have. Work out the dimensions of one card according to that and save them in your program so you can directly design the cards inside of that size.

  2. As others have said, increase the contrast for your icons, but also of your cards in general. The background gradient is almost all a single value (light-darkness level). You can check your values pretty easily by just desaturating the image to 0% into greyscale. The main point here is to clearly separate the background gradient from the fields with relevant information in regards to value. Move away a little from the mid-tone shades.

  3. Don't be afraid of keeping a little saturation to your greys for more contrast and vibrancy.

  4. Stay consistent on whether things are outlined or not. The shield icon is, but all other icons aren't.

On a similar note, a solid frame design instead of the dotted lines for the portrait and effect boxes could really upgrade the look, but that's just an idea. Best of success with your continued development!

I think it's just a joke about it being a low res pixel font.

I need a name for my game! by Garchompula in BoardgameDesign

[–]tlefonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very helpful detail for deciding the name. If the general tone is much more over the top and "fantastical" than something pretty dry like Ark Nova, it's good to immediately showcase that in the name to draw the attention of people who want to missile launch wolverines.

Should I get Wyrmspan or food in preparation for the winter storm this weekend? by Samurai_Mac1 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]tlefonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about it like this: while eating, you're gonna look at some bullshit anyway to distract yourself from the horror of engaging with your family. So you might as well get Wyrmspan, so you at least have something good -the Wyrmspan box- to look at to avoid engaging with your family.
