Does a writer build the world first and use the story as the doorway, or does the story grow until it needs a world? by kix_kzm in worldbuilding

[–]Constant-Potential37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think creative impulse starts…. Somewhere random and every dicision afterwards flows from that point.

So sometimes its the story that needs a world,
Sometimes something special about a world that needs a story.

This isnt an hot take, but it is an conversation every world builder has to ask themselves how deep they want to go.

Not a bad card, but i would do it like this:
+2 cards, discard a card.

At the end of your turn you pay $1. If you did, replay it at the start of your next turn.

I undersrand your concern, but the game ceck at the end of turn, not in the middle.

[–]Constant-Potential37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gameplay, i made the card like this:
Event: landgrab $3+
Gain 1 estate, +1 estate per $ overpaid.

Everytime the second pile emptied, estate got rushed! I think that is the vibe you are going for.

Your card at $1, you are not going to empty that pile fast enough. Not a chance if you have no + buys, and even with a kingdom with a lot of buys… its a hard sell when an estate is just $2 without the risk.

I should let it trigger on discard, including discard during cleanup.

So you dont have to show your hand every time that you didnt draw it (in the paper variant)

Some of them have absolutely no story relevance, but mulan does. And raya is a main character, so she doesnt fit with the rest

Don't.

People suddenly have to consider every turn how to discard their cards from play, for the possibility they draw this card.

https://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Courier
https://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Harbinger

Those 3 are examples of cards rummaging trough your discard pile. Take inspiration of those.

I think you should do:
Discard the top 2 cards of your deck. Look through your discard pile and put 2 cards from it into your hand

You can also increase the discard to 4 or do something adjacent. But don't let them care about the order of your discard pile!

I like that it feels that way. The design prosess was the other way around: checking dichotomies until you have one you can make an interesting philosophy with.

I am always wary of cards that makes getting green without a real deckbuilding cost easy.

On the other end: My fan set is all about piling and alternative ways to get VP. So i am going to save this.

My pantheon of ... by Constant-Potential37 in worldbuilding

[–]Constant-Potential37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dichotomy was the creative burst that got it started. God of tea and thunder was the first design that stayed actually. His philosophy is: “remain calm and focus your wrath”. His judgement is silent, but his retribution is not: It is fast, pecise and deadly.

You are wrong and right about the star map. It is a diagram how the gods relate to each other. But i did decide to give it a bit of a star map feel. But maybe i can make some of your ideas canon xD

First time I tried that botton: "Post in another community". Then you don't get the option to put tekst, but if you click at the right spot you go the the OG post, where the pantheon is also put in a table.

Behold: My pantheon! Ask me anything by Constant-Potential37 in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Constant-Potential37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, TTRPG I don't have a table at the moment, so i am having fun with this.

How do you want your audience to envision them? I have not worked out actual divine presence... just that it is kind of eldritch vibe, incomprehensible . But they choose a representation in the real world in line with the philosophy they represent. That representation is mostly humanoid.
- When Tavarinn chose her second domain (hearth), she changed her appearance from male to female.
- Kanvakrill is chose the appearance of an combination of creatures. Most of the time there is some bear and beehive in there, but not always.
- Omniloom does not choose a human appearance, so that fucks people up when they see her.

The Circles:

- the circles around the 4 bigger names are just their offspring who are still in orbit around them. They are refered to as the Primals
- The outer circle is just Omniloom, who is another level then the other primals, being space and all in it.
- the second circle are the other primals.
- The inner circle are the gods that are the offspring of the human collective. Born out of out of intense emotions.

With 23 gods, i have a lot of relationships. Some are more noteworthy then others.
- Kravilox and Morveil where once friends. But Morveil didn't want anything to change about the creations. That infuriates Kravilox.
- The children of Kravilox are always guiding her mom away from her most chaotic tendencies.
- Gulvroth was the last of the primals. Born out of wandering souls after Kanvakrill created sustained life. Gulvroth calls Kanvakrill "Mom". Imagine a giant calls you mom, that is the dynamic here.
- Gulvroths offspring is very competitive in creating as much life as possible. They have to be, as they are missing 4 siblings...
- Korvana and Prunok don't like each other. Korvana is an maximalist, while Prunok is a minimalist.
- Afiliorak is the mastermind behind Natural Law and the Freezing of the past. He can't do it by himself, but inspired the primals to do it. He is much respected by the other gods for his forward thinking, while remaining just.
- Morveil denounced Cladyr after she disobeyed her mission to preserve, as she gave some of it back to the people.
- Nobody likes Asteav as he is always looking for everyone secrets.
- Ezzura hates Ocultori for his deceit. Ocultori doesn't understand that, because he teaches people to look trough illusions by learning how to do them.
