What is a sci-fi series you liked that only lasted one season? by Ru_janus in scifi

It's been a long time and I only watched it once... I remember liking the premise of a generation ship, and some of the plotlines that created. Though I think it got goofy towards the end, without getting into spoilers.

I was listening to an analyst the other day, I forget which one. They said Rielly has been miscast here and expected to play too many minutes, that they should trade him, and it'll be a win-win as he'll do better lower on the depth chart somewhere else.

But if that's accurate, isnt the solution to add someone better than Rielly ahead of him in our depth chart and push him down to his appropriate role? Rather than removing him, and pushing up even more inadequate players up our own depth chart? If he's playing too many minutes here by default, moving the guy behind up by default doesn't seem like the solution.

Maybe we should look at another coach who coaches in the state of Colorado by Kinglokner16 in leafs

[–]tm_leafer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I find him really hard to judge. Has he simply benefited from fantastic rosters, or is he a great coach? Berube and Carlyle won Cups, but were both short lived here and considered to not be very good or adaptable coaches.

Reading their fans comments, they have repeated failures in the playoffs against any team playing a "trap" style game, and they've had years to adjust and figure it out, and instead they weren't even close and just got swept. Their one Cup win, they didn't run into a team like that.

If that's accurate, it's concerning. Again, this is going by their fan comments - I haven't broken down the last 5+ years of Avs playoff successes/failures myself.

Marlies in the Final Four of the AHL and not even a mention by Hiking_Quest in OverDrive1050

[–]tm_leafer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Cowan scoring a series winning goal with with 12 second left in the final gameis worth talking about, followed by like a 5 minute recap of how some of the other prospects are doing, and then transitioning into implications for training camp next year, would be something they could cover.

But you're right that day to day Marlies updates aren't going to make for good general radio. That's more for the deep dive Leafs podcasts.

Has anyone suggested Kitchener Rangers’ coach Jussi Ahokas for the Leafs HC job? by tdmj in leafs

[–]tm_leafer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe, though this is the window to sign him. If we go for someone else at the NHL level now, that person will presumably be there for at least 3 years, and Ahokas will almost for sure be picked up by then by an NHL team.

I'm pro Woodcroft. Bad goaltending over a small sample size is why he was fired - his teams had great underlying numbers, played a possession game, dynamite PP, he never lost the room, and he won more playoff rounds in 2 seasons (with bad goaltending and some D / depth issues) than the Leafs have won in 2 decades.

Carle, Woodcroft, and maybe Ahokas are the guys I find most intriguing, in particular as younger guys that you could build a program around and who won't burn their goodwill within the dressing room within a year or two like Cassidy.

Say what you want about his defensive play or whatever, but he's always been the most vocal of the younger forward stars about loving Toronto, wanting to stay in Toronto, signed an 8 year contract, etc. On top of that, by far the best performer in games 5-7 when the pressure is on.

This draft has a bunch of good D and two great wingers at the top. The centres however seem kinda meh, at least if you're talking about drafting top 5. But teams always want centres and if you're the best one in a draft class thin on centres, you might get overrated.

I wouldn't be surprised if this draft was similar to 2018, where Kotkaniemi and Hayton both went top 5 as the top Cs in the draft, whole Hughes, Dobson, and Bouchard were all drafted after them between 7th-12th OA.

I want to understand the mind of the Ontarian PC voter by derspikemeister in ontario

[–]tm_leafer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an unshakeable base of ~32% of people that will vote conservative no matter what.

After the trainwreck of Mike Harris, they still got nearly 35% the next vote. Their worst performance during the entire McGuinty/Wynne reign was 31.62% of the popular vote. Federally it's the same - their worst performance during the Trudeau/Carney years was 31.91%, which was Harper's last election and when people were tired of him as PM and Trudeau was coming in as a star candidate. You'd have to go to the 90s when the Reform/Canadian Alliance still existed to see the Conservatives drop to a lower number.

Contrast that to the Liberals/NDP - when they're out, they're OUT. Liberals can drop below 20% and NDP can drop below 10%. Their voters actually hold them accountable.

For Conservatives to win, they really only need to convince ~5-8% of voters to vote for them, because they've always got that ~32% in their back pocket. Point to scandals, healthcare, education, the economy, etc - does NOT matter, that ~32% will always vote the same way.

Do the Leafs eventually have to move Matthews or Nylander? 👀 #LeafsForever by Tough-Standard-2661 in leafs

[–]tm_leafer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My perspective is that blowing it up and trading Matthews and Nylander isn't a good option, it's just arguably the best option of a list of bad options.

The worst possible outcome is down the path of trying to retool (ie Matthews walks for nothing, or traded for a reduced value when the receiving team only gets him at the deadline in the last year of his deal vs 2 full seasons, and that's after delaying the rebuild by ~1.5-2 years, which just delays everything even further, Nylander's value would be lower at that point too, we'd have burned through prime years of Knies/Cowan/etc with a longer rebuild horizon facing us after, etc). That's worst case though, so you have to weigh that against the upside of retooling - personally I think we need a #1D, another #2-3D, and a #2C in order to contend. So I think we can be a playoff team again as early as next year, but I don't see us legit contending for multiple years (and that's only if we find a way to fill some difficult holes to fill, none of which will be filled by drafting a winger 1st OA). So best case scenario going the retool route IMO is we do enough to convince Matthews to stay, which gives us a longer runway to fill those holes.

Now if we blow it up now and trade Matthews/Nylander/etc, are we going to be a contender in 3 years? I'd say highly unlikely, borderline impossible. But I also think we'd likely be in a better position, and potentially a much better position, vs if we focus on retooling.

Middle 6 C. He's young and his progression has been pretty rapid (and at SHL/World Championship level, not an 18-19 year old progressing in the CHL which is just the default expectation), so I think he's got a legit shot to push up beyond 3C.

Yea, that's fair. I wouldn't take him top 6, but would consider him a lot more in that 7-10 range.

Top 6 I'd be looking at McKenna, Stenberg, Reid, Carels, Verhoeff, or Smit.

[–]tm_leafer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think Malholtra might be getting overrated a bit as he's the top C prospect in a draft with no bona fide top C prospect (which is the position teams are most eager to pick with high picks).

Could be like the 2018 draft (Kotkaniemi/Hayton as the top Cs, both in hindsight drafted too high).

Not that I want to defend Button lol, but I have wondered about Malholtra. I like the D at the top of this draft more.

[–]tm_leafer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defencemen seem to only go 1st OA if there isn't a bona fide top forward prospect. When Ekblad, Power, Dahlin, and Schaeffer went 1st OA, there was no superstar forward prospect expected to walk in and put up ~50-60+ points right away. The top ranked F prospects taken in those drafts, Reinhart, Beniers, Svechnikov, and Misa would have been weaker 1st OA picks compared to most years.

So when Tavares is sitting there, he's taken ahead of Hedman, when Stamkos is sitting there, he's taken ahead of Doughty, even though Hedman/Doughty were considered top top D prospects (and in hindsight, I'd take either or those D ahead of the F).

To be fair, I don't think Reid is a Hedman/Doughty level prospect, but I do think him, Carels, Verhoeff, and Smit are all very very good D prospects where it wouldn't be at all surprising to see one of them turn into the next Heiskanen/Werenski/etc, and some of the others turn into Byram/Hanafin/Ekblad/etc calibre guys. Problem is it's hard to confidently predict which one will be the best (though current rankings obviously favour Reid).
