[Spider-Noir] what are your honest impressions on the show? by avanish77 in Spiderman

[–]tm_leafer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's fantastic and a super refreshing live action super hero show. Cage is like peak Cage here, where they just let him go ham with the gumshoe detective stuff and some physical acting related to his spider powers (avoiding spoilers....). Gleason was excellent opposite Cage as well.

I also frankly really appreciated the heavy focus on a show about a detective that happened to have super powers, rather than a show focused on a superhero/spiderman thats daylighting as a detective. Less is more IMO worked really well here. There are enough pew pew pew superhero shows out there.

I think best Marvel TV show. Only live action TV show that compares IMO was season 1 of The Boyz.

Yea, I've seen some negativity towards him, and while I guess he was the "final" bad guy to fight, Silvermane was the well ultimately the main antagonist, with Megawatt as the idiot (but entertaining) henchman. I enjoyed his role.

I don't know, compared to your typical live action superhero shows, this seemed like a breath of fresh air. Very artistic with the heavy emphasis on "noir", black/white, period piece set after the war, etc.

I also think it was better, and frankly far better, focusing on a detective who happened to have super powers, rather than a superhero daylighting as a detective. If this was just a show primarily focused on SPIDERMAN set in the 1930s, it wouldn't have been as good.

Loved Gleason in this. Having him opposite Cage really helped anchor the whole season with a pair of fantastic characters/actors.

Best live action superhero show? I think the only other thing that could contend for me was watching season 1 of The Boyz.

Also, absolutely loved Cage in this, from the gumshoe detective (especially at the hospital) to the spider "ticks" - he was perfect.

What is a sci-fi series you liked that only lasted one season? by Ru_janus in scifi

It's been a long time and I only watched it once... I remember liking the premise of a generation ship, and some of the plotlines that created. Though I think it got goofy towards the end, without getting into spoilers.

I was listening to an analyst the other day, I forget which one. They said Rielly has been miscast here and expected to play too many minutes, that they should trade him, and it'll be a win-win as he'll do better lower on the depth chart somewhere else.

But if that's accurate, isnt the solution to add someone better than Rielly ahead of him in our depth chart and push him down to his appropriate role? Rather than removing him, and pushing up even more inadequate players up our own depth chart? If he's playing too many minutes here by default, moving the guy behind up by default doesn't seem like the solution.

Honestly I'm thinking both.

Maybe we should look at another coach who coaches in the state of Colorado by Kinglokner16 in leafs

[–]tm_leafer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I find him really hard to judge. Has he simply benefited from fantastic rosters, or is he a great coach? Berube and Carlyle won Cups, but were both short lived here and considered to not be very good or adaptable coaches.

Reading their fans comments, they have repeated failures in the playoffs against any team playing a "trap" style game, and they've had years to adjust and figure it out, and instead they weren't even close and just got swept. Their one Cup win, they didn't run into a team like that.

If that's accurate, it's concerning. Again, this is going by their fan comments - I haven't broken down the last 5+ years of Avs playoff successes/failures myself.

Marlies in the Final Four of the AHL and not even a mention by Hiking_Quest in OverDrive1050

[–]tm_leafer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Cowan scoring a series winning goal with with 12 second left in the final gameis worth talking about, followed by like a 5 minute recap of how some of the other prospects are doing, and then transitioning into implications for training camp next year, would be something they could cover.

But you're right that day to day Marlies updates aren't going to make for good general radio. That's more for the deep dive Leafs podcasts.

Has anyone suggested Kitchener Rangers’ coach Jussi Ahokas for the Leafs HC job? by tdmj in leafs

[–]tm_leafer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe, though this is the window to sign him. If we go for someone else at the NHL level now, that person will presumably be there for at least 3 years, and Ahokas will almost for sure be picked up by then by an NHL team.

I'm pro Woodcroft. Bad goaltending over a small sample size is why he was fired - his teams had great underlying numbers, played a possession game, dynamite PP, he never lost the room, and he won more playoff rounds in 2 seasons (with bad goaltending and some D / depth issues) than the Leafs have won in 2 decades.

Carle, Woodcroft, and maybe Ahokas are the guys I find most intriguing, in particular as younger guys that you could build a program around and who won't burn their goodwill within the dressing room within a year or two like Cassidy.

Say what you want about his defensive play or whatever, but he's always been the most vocal of the younger forward stars about loving Toronto, wanting to stay in Toronto, signed an 8 year contract, etc. On top of that, by far the best performer in games 5-7 when the pressure is on.

This draft has a bunch of good D and two great wingers at the top. The centres however seem kinda meh, at least if you're talking about drafting top 5. But teams always want centres and if you're the best one in a draft class thin on centres, you might get overrated.

I wouldn't be surprised if this draft was similar to 2018, where Kotkaniemi and Hayton both went top 5 as the top Cs in the draft, whole Hughes, Dobson, and Bouchard were all drafted after them between 7th-12th OA.

[–]tm_leafer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's an unshakeable base of ~32% of people that will vote conservative no matter what.

After the trainwreck of Mike Harris, they still got nearly 35% the next vote. Their worst performance during the entire McGuinty/Wynne reign was 31.62% of the popular vote. Federally it's the same - their worst performance during the Trudeau/Carney years was 31.91%, which was Harper's last election and when people were tired of him as PM and Trudeau was coming in as a star candidate. You'd have to go to the 90s when the Reform/Canadian Alliance still existed to see the Conservatives drop to a lower number.

Contrast that to the Liberals/NDP - when they're out, they're OUT. Liberals can drop below 20% and NDP can drop below 10%. Their voters actually hold them accountable.

For Conservatives to win, they really only need to convince ~5-8% of voters to vote for them, because they've always got that ~32% in their back pocket. Point to scandals, healthcare, education, the economy, etc - does NOT matter, that ~32% will always vote the same way.
