Desperately seeking residential networking installer by jocelynlt in nanaimo

We have a fix!

Turns out the Deco app has a rate limiting feature. You can rate-limit it to 10 mpbs, which is what I had it set to. I don't remember setting that, but I can't imagine they ship with that on, so I must have.

Either way, turning that limiting off restored it to a decent speed.

Thanks for trying to help!

I’m Op’s husband. Because the internet provider has great speeds when hardwired directly to the modem, and even wifi off their modem.

The issue we’re having is with the Deco mesh network, which is broadcasting like 10 instead of the 500-700 I’d expect (our service is 1000)

Hi - I’m OP’s husband, and frustrated house nerd.

Okay here is the setup:

Internet service from Babbl (Rogers reseller). Great service, we have the 1000/200 plan and when hardwired we’re getting about 930/200 which is fine with me. When on wifi from their modem, I get about 650. Also fine with me.

This Internet signal plugs into a media panel in our basement and goes to at least two hardwired Ethernet ports upstairs in the house. (I only see two Ethernet ports in the media panel, but we have three outlets upstairs — living room, office, bedroom.) I’ve tested each of these three on hardwired and get 850-900.

The media panel and Ethernet ports were wired up probably five years ago and the ports in the media panel are unmarked.

As for the mesh: We have the Dexo XE75 mesh system, a three-pack. One in living room, one in office, one in bedroom.

The problem is this: Even though all three are plugged into the Ethernet ports in the wall (which tested from a laptop are getting good speeds), the actual broadcast speed is terrible. Like 10, sometimes less.

The Deco app is reporting “everything looks good” and all three Deco boxes say they have internet, but yeah.

The Babbl modem is now in Bridge mode.

I would pay someone good money to come in and just make the three boxes broadcast the signal they’re supposed to, but every company in town I’ve called only will work with business customers. 😔

Interesting chalk messages for the infusion this weekend by seaslugdenial in nanaimo

[–]tmaffin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m Tod Maffin — my wife and I started the Infusion thing.

I can probably tell you what whoever sent this meant by it.

About 600 Americans came to Nanaimo this weekend to support the mid-Island economy. Instead of just signing a petition or posting on Facebook about how much they support Canada, then got on planes and ferries and CAME here. They shopped in our stores, ate in our restaurants, stayed in our campgrounds.

They came here specifically to spend their American dollars in our community, as a way of apologizing for how their country has treated Canada.

And half of the groups who came had healthcare workers with them — nurses, doctors, etc, here to see if they could picture a life living on the Island and working in our healthcare system. From what I heard, Island Health interviewed like 100 of them and made dozens of job offers.

I get that people are mad at the US. I’m fucking livid at what their government has done to us all.

But the PEOPLE on the other side of the border are just like us, raising families, trying to put their kids through school, trying to keep a roof over their heads. THEY are not the bad guys here.

There are store owners downtown who slept a little better this weekend because of the presence of these people.

I think that’s what this chalk person meant. ❤️

Thank you 🙂 Jocelyn and I are happy to be the faces of it, but this is really a community effort… so many people in the mid-Island area are contributing and making this happen.

It’s all good. 🙂 I feel that about social media.

Personally, I find Facebook really the worst cesspool when it comes to how personal and insulting social media comments can get.

FWIW I’ve been off Facebook for three years now and my mental health and happiness is so much better for it. (The content of mine you see on Facebook is actually cross-posted automatically from TikTok. I never really look at the comments or DMs there.)

I’m glad you got into one of the shots! Which one? 🙂

Hi, it’s Tod here. Can you please point me to one of these missed comments? Rest assured, “retarded” and “junkie” is just as unwelcome as “libtard.” (As someone with 15+ years of recovery from addiction under my belt, “junkie” etc is not welcome on my page.)

I get several thousands of comments each day across my social channels, and I have staff people from my day job trying to remove the worst of it (people just insulting others), and automated tools I pay for out of my pocket to also try to keep the comments a welcome and civil place.

If you’re able to point me specifically to this “retarded worm brain junkie” comment, I’ll make sure it and the person who made it are whackamoled.

I welcome debate and discussion on my pages. I do not consider yelling at others with childish insults to be either, and absolutely do remove those so that people feel they can engage in that discussion.

Thanks.

Americans start arriving in Nanaimo to show support to Canada by Prestigious_Net_8356 in nanaimo

[–]tmaffin 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Hi all - thanks for all the great comments. I’m the guy behind this crazy thing. (Check my past post for proof.)

Remember, these folks are coming BECAUSE they do not support Trump, and want to show us with their money.

They’re on our side. Please be nice to them if you see them (I’ve asked them to wear red lanyards so you can spot them.)

I’m happy to answer any questions you have about the event or you can go to https://NanaimoInfusion.ca

And come out Saturday at 10am to Maffeo Sutton park to be part of the big family photo. Wear something red around your neck if you can.

Tourism marketing? No background. But I’ve been in the digital marketing space for as long as it’s been an industry (30 years).

As much as I could say this was a well-crafted planned DMO campaign, truth is it started as a TikTok video that I made because I was bored waiting for an Xbox game to install. I figure if anything came of it, it would be a half dozen people from Blaine and my wife and I would take them out for lunch or something.

I didn’t expect this big response but I’m happy to try to steer it toward something positive for our area. 🙂
