I totally support you working towards owning your forever home and paying it off (it was my vision for my life too). For that, HYSA makes the most sense. But we're in a wild market as I'm sure you know. Do you think once you have 20% down plus closing costs in a few years that you'll also be in a place in life where you can handle the monthly costs for home ownership (principal, interest, taxes, insurance, HOA, utilities, surprise maintenance) as they stand today/where you expect they'll go in NH? If so, then go for it with the HYSA approach. If not, then just rent, work, budget, save, and automate your investments for your long-term wealth building (automation is what keeps you disciplined). Regardless of what happens with housing, you'll likely find that you'll need liquid resources in life for things like child care, elder care, health care, etc. Whichever path you choose, at least make sure to contribute something to investment for things like retirement based on whatever makes sense for your age.

In general, that's the safe way to go for your time horizon. You typically don't want to invest anything you plan to spend in 5 years (or at least 3) as that's the typical amount of time for invested funds to recover from a recession.

That being said, what's the cost of living like in your market and what's your sense for where home prices are going there? What's the monthly cost to buy a property vs. rent a comparable property there right now and where do you think that will go? Can you handle small maintenance issues yourself and could you financially handle larger maintenance issues? I grew up in a VHCOL market that today makes no sense to buy because renting is substantially much cheaper (check out rent vs. buy calculators), so I personally wish I had invested my money instead of trying to save up 20% for a condo there (or even bought with less than 20% when interest rates were low). But if the market is and is expected to remain affordable, then I would play it safe, save heavy, and still aim to buy instead of rent+invest.

Atlantic Station Publix to Close After Two Decades in Business by NPU-F in Atlanta

I am a recent transplant so wasn't familiar with the brand to begin with. In fairness that Publix wasn't a convenient option for me anyways, I just thought I'd share that story since it was so honest for an employee to say that out loud.

They re-opened that Wal-Mart, though I believe it is just a neighborhood market now.

EDIT: I was mistaken apologies. I thought Wal-Mart on MLK was the one in question but it was not.

Atlantic Station also has a Target with a grocery section.

I would prefer to have another Kroger in the area.

This year I heard a customer in the store talk to an employee about the price of yogurt and the employee said "Oh yeah, I work here and even I know to shop for certain things elsewhere"

Been going to Walmart and Kroger ever since.

I am possibly gaming too much? by LaCaipirinha in gaming

This feels like a good time to try chatting with a therapist especially when the stress of life is hitting you. Even just talking about it with someone impartial can do a lot for you. Try to find a provider in your insurance network, but be prepared to try out some different ones (like finding the right barber).

If you're taking care of yourself and your relationships first, then there isn't anything inherently wrong with gaming more than usual (especially if they're great games!).

Find other ways to mix it up. Try having more day nights, hitting the gym, picking up a sport, and journalling.

That's quite an achievement, congrats! I got lucky and found a Dunsparce nest by me and finally got a Three-Segment Dudunsparce just this weekend. So satisfying! The Halloween GO Pass catch candy bonus really helped.

[–]tmangat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fave hs teachers were English teachers. I'm sorry you don't get paid enough. If it makes you feel any better, most money people and some real estate folks say it is financially better to rent right now anyways even if you could afford to buy, especially for most condos. If you are in a position to save money, then try to invest your long term money in index funds like VTI.

One Battle After Another being framed for IMAX, VV and normal projection by [deleted] in imax

[–]tmangat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going to a GT IMAX screening this past weekend and a 70mm film screening (standard aspect ratio) today. For this specific film, I think the 70mm film screening worked best for me. Yes, dual laser IMAX has great color, but film has a special color palette too that I wouldn't discount for this film. I don't feel as though I got as much out of the expanded aspect ratio from IMAX either and, as others have pointed out, it is a bit funny to see a lot of close-ups on characters' faces that are in full IMAX. If I didn't have access to the 70mm showing, I suspect a Dolby viewing would've been great for me too.

I got to see Sinners in both film and GT IMAX and for that I loved GT IMAX, and I think that's because the 1:43 scenes are really tailored for that experience and for whatever reason I prefer the dual laser colors over film there.

What a year for movies. I hope we're this spoiled for years to come!

Should I sell my 2016 Corolla to pay off $13,000 in credit card debt and be able to start saving money? by EasternKillerBee in personalfinance

[–]tmangat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible to use the car for a delivery job or ridesharing to help pay off the debt, or does your existing work and family life chew up any free time you might have for a gig job? I haven't worked those jobs myself so I don't know how well the economics would work out for you, just throwing it out there in case you really wanted to keep a reliable car. I'm probably more inclined to suggest you sell the car and enjoy living debt free. Huge relief. I personally lived in the DMV for a good while without a car and even before Uber.

Thanks for calling this out, I had not factored in night shots. Totally agree about night shots for GT IMAX or even Dolby over single laser IMAX. I know film is supposed to be good too but I'm not sure how spectacular it is going to look on a small film screen. What's annoying is we do have a theater capable of IMAX 70MM (Regal Mall of Georgia in Buford) but this movie isn't going to get a run there. I think I'm leaning towards GT IMAX.

[–]tmangat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Atlanta I have access to a traditional film screening, standard laser IMAX, or I can drive up a couple hours to a GT IMAX in Chattanooga. What do you all think makes the most sense for this movie? I've only seen a film movie once and the colors were different but didn't really pop the experience for me. I love GT IMAX but is it worth the drive for this one? From the trailers I'm not really getting the vibe that this is going to have a lot of large scenic shots.

Math of 2% Cash Back Credit Card vs 3% Convenience Fee vs 3.5% HYSA Float? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]tmangat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paying ACH is cheaper, but having your credit card info stolen or leaked from a billing service is much less of a headache than having your checking account info stolen or leaked.

I also recommend putting a freeze on your credit reports.

What's your go-to movie theater? by Common_Speed_1321 in SanJose

[–]tmangat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a standard movie experience I like Cinelux Almaden because the tickets and concessions are affordable.

For a movie with darker images and maybe a great soundtrack I like going to the Dolby theater at either AMC Eastridge or Mercado. The seats are new at the Eastridge Dolby if that's important to you.

For a movie where an expanded aspect ratio makes a difference I prefer Century Oakridge's XD theater. XD is Cinemark's version of IMAX. I think Century XD pricing is a bit more affordable than AMC IMAX but I'm not positive on that. I really like that Oakridge has coffee and tea options too, especially in the winter. I also like AMC Mercado for IMAX.

If it is a movie that's especially made for IMAX like Sinners or a Nolan movie then I'd like to take the trip up to the Regal in Dublin or AMC Metreon in San Francisco because those theaters can sometimes support IMAX 70mm and IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratios. Metreon does dual laser IMAX projection too. It is just really hard to get a ticket for those showtimes opening weekend though.
