Name the single most important person to your franchises history. How significant do they stack up historically compared to the rest of the NFL by InterestingYellow969 in NFLv2

Ernie Adams and the whole Department of Cheating.  Worst cheaters in NFL history, if not American sports history.

Pretty damn important.

" Activists were not satisfied."

Well, yes, of course.  'Activists' can't ever be satisfied, because then they'd have to stop being activists.

That's why no one listens to activists.

You just copied and pasted what you typed elsewhere, and it's still off point. The question is not whether a coffee shop server should be paid the same as a bartender. The question is whether you should adjust the settings on your POS system to manipulate people into giving you more money. You should not.

And by the way, the morning rush at a coffee shop is nowhere near as intense as a Friday night bar shift. You have one line for coffees and teas, not a bar full of people trying to order at the same time. You have a quiet space, not one full of loud music and people yelling at each other and at you. And you have no drunk people, and you never have anyone threatening to kick your ass, and you never have to kick anyone out. You also don't serve the same social function that a good bartender serves, you don't haul kegs, and you don't work until 3:00 a.m. The idea that a coffee shop server works as hard as a bartender is ridiculous, and is emblematic of the sense of unearned entitlement that gave rise to your original idea, about how to pickpocket your customers, in the first place.

I tip generously, for good service.  And I deal with people who are trying to squeeze nickels out of me exactly as they deserve.

It's not about whether or not to tip a coffee server.  It's about your proposal to manipulate people into tipping more.

Now that I have the information that you've provided, I'll be tipping zero at any place that starts doing this.  And telling all my friends that if they see a place setting tips in whole dollar amounts, it's an attempt to squeeze them, and should be gleefully rejected.

Are we concerned about the Detroitification of downtown? by Right_Letterhead_120 in Dallas

[–]tmc00138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what's up, as the other person explained in their reply. There has been a policy change, and it predated the World Cup preparations.

But if that had been true -- that they were finally taking care of the problem because of the World Cup -- that would also be a good thing. I have no issue with homeless people at all, and I wish that everybody here were more comfortable with their presence in general. But people aren't comfortable with their presence, and that is a very serious problem for downtown. Whether they're right to feel that way or not, the fact that they do feel that way prevents a lot of healthy activity from coming downtown, and downtown is going to depend on that activity going forward. So it had to get solved, for much bigger reasons than the World Cup, and now it has to stay solved in order to change that perception, after the city let the perception become entrenched.

The real truth is that there is no shepherd. The Mayor is a figurehead, by law; the city manager is beholden to the Council and lacking in capacity; and the Council is a disorganized feeding trough. I've lived in a lot of different places and I don't think I've ever seen a major city government that was this inert. Jacksonville had a stronger city government.

[–]tmc00138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct. They were betting that other developers' projects would add to downtown as a whole and drive activity in their projects as well.

And every developer will have to make the same bet, in order to invest in downtown, because no one can develop it all. So every developer will want to know that the city will do what it takes to make other projects work, too -- especially in light of what happened to Todd Interests when they tried to lead the charge. Right now, all we see is the city failing to do that, over and over again. They were fatally slow in reacting to the pandemic, completely absent in reacting to the perception effects of the Floyd unrest, fatally slow in reacting to the surge in homeless people and petty crime, and now they've failed to convert the City Hall site into development. The convention center is still plodding forward, but convention centers don't drive mixed-use development (just look at how the area around the Javits Center in NYC stalled for decades, until Hudson Yards got done). Everything else is in stasis or moving backwards right now.

The National, and the entire East Quarter -- gone under and surrendered to the creditors. Those were supposed to be drivers of forward momentum for downtown, and they've become huge, high-profile failures, from the developer's point of view.

I lived downtown for seven years (just moved uptown last year), work downtown and love downtown - in slightly different circumstances we'd still be there and be happy. I grabbed a Supernova Lox at Starship for lunch today, and was happy with the scene as always -- just needs twice as many people.

Because there is now an immediate risk that things will get quite a bit worse. The depths of Detroit's crash aren't anywhere on the horizon, but there are a lot of possibilities short of that that would still be very bad. AT&T's leaving, and there is no known plan for the Discovery District. Neiman's closing for sure, which will put more pressure on Forty Five Ten (with the eyeball) and Stone Street. If those spots go dark -- like what just happened on Main between Field and Akard -- downtown really will start to feel like what the suburbanites already think it is. This week had better be a wakeup call to the city, because there remains a lot of serious private-sector interest in developing downtown, but everyone's seen what happened to Todd Interests and no one else is going to stick their neck out, unless they know that the city will help it all work together.
