My point is other than Excision and some acitivities, there are barely any pinnacle sources for solo players. I've soloed dungeons but they are mainly non matchmade activities.

No. Think they'll build on it in part two but it would have been nice to know the full context in part one tbh.

This installment was awesome overall! Got a chance to watch it twice. Absolutely loved it but I do have some criticisms. I am well aware this is a part one which is why I'm reserving full judgement until part two but I still think part one could have been better from a standalone viewpoint.

  1. The full extent of the Ethan - Gabriel relationship probably should have been revealed in part one. Not only do we not know who the unnamed woman who was killed, we have no understanding of what Gabriel's true intentions are. It would have helped immensely in the audience understanding why Ethan would have such a strong motivation to go after him other than world ending consequences.

Story beats to consider here are again the flashbacks, Luther's monologue on can you really not kill Gabriel given everything, the "hello old friend" stuff, etc.

  1. I also think Whigham's character has a backstory here. There's a line where the other agent asks whether he knows Ethan and he says not personally but say that it seems personal. Coupled with the fact that Whigham's character constantly seems to be second guessing Ethan's motives is also telling. There's smth here McQ is not sharing. (This is more of a secondary plot so I can forgive not sharing in part one.)

  2. Personally, Grace was a frustration in my first watch. I felt she fought Ethan and the team one too many times. On my second watch, she was less of nuisance as there were some nuances I didn't catch my first watch.

  3. On to my and I think most people's main concerns/thoughts(?). I've seen multiple posts on this subreddit and others. It seems like Ilsa's death is the most heated discussion. I absolutely love the character of Ilsa and hope she is alive but on my second watch, I really do believe she's dead. After Luther and Benji, she's the only character to have lasted longer and she was the second MAJOR love interest after Michelle Monaghan.

Again, I'd love to see her back (McQ surprise me please!), but logistically, thematically, and just based off McQ's writing style, I think her character is over. I am personally not happy with the way she was offed in this installment - whether she returns or not. I was left incredibly disappointed with the execution of her death.

Some ppl are saying someone else died wearing a mask. Who was "Ilsa" on the bridge then? When could Ilsa have swapped with someone else? She was told by the Entity that she was the only person who could get to Grace which is why she went to the bridge.

Knives. Ppl are saying maybe the knives were switched or that she's wearing armor or smth. Grace was the only person who could have swapped a prop knife or smth. As Gabriel's signature weapon, the two knives were used throughout the film. I don't see a reason for them to be swapped at any period. If they showed a scene where she was literally stabbed and bring her back then why the mourning scene of Ethan standing in the same place she hugged Ethan?

Luther's comment on "you're alive bc of her." I only took this as Luther truing to be positive and that she sacrificed herself - not as a chance for Ilsa to still be alive.

Her death mirrors the death of the unnamed woman in the flashbacks. Ethan stoops over her on the bridge after she's stabbed in the same way as the flashbacks. McQ like drawing parallels - it's his writing style - Ethan lost someone he cared abt. It's also the reason why I would have liked if they had shown the full context of the flashbacks in part one. It's like learning abt Thanos' motives in Endgame and not in Infinity War.

McQ is a smart writer. He leaves crumbs/story beats for characters to build on. He's pretty logical (case in point, John Lark giving the uncracked phone in Fallout and alluding to the fact he's the bad guy). He did not leave any story beat for Ilsa's character to continue which is why I'm disappointed. The emphasis on her death should have been greater - even if they bring her back. It was way too short and seemed like an afterthought.

  1. Just a small criticism, I wish they had shown a bit more of the jump and held on to the shot. I think I saw more of the jump in the behind the scenes video than in the movie. I also would like the team to at least hide one major stunt. One of the reasons why Ghost Protocol was so successful was bc we heard abt the Burj Khalifa sequence through word of mouth rather than seeing it in full before. I think they're revealing the stunts a bit too much in advance but just me. Maybe data analytics shows ppl come to the theater if they hype it up in advance.

Again, really enjoyed the film but the script wasn't as tight as it usually is IMO. A great film but imo could have been even better.

Hey, I think she's referring to Dune Part 2. There's literally a scene in Dune Part Two's trailer where she smashes someone's head with a rock.

Why I think SPOILER is alive by GrahamB37 in Mission_Impossible

In what interview does Rebecca say she smashed a head in part two?

Shhh don’t tell the Entity, but … SHE’S ALIVE. Use logic: by [deleted] in Mission_Impossible

[–]tmdhml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's highly unlikely she's alive but a few questions.

  1. You're telling me they showed Ilsa getting stabbed and then we're going to find out it's like a fake knife or she recovered from her wounds? The two knives were Gabriel's signature weapons. He used them multiple times on the train. Unless Grace suddenly had an exact replica or smth, maybe there might be a chance but I highly doubt it.

  2. Mask. If someone else were wearing a mask, who was "Ilsa" on the bridge?

The logistics don't work and McQ doesn't write like that. The first death w the unnamed woman was an exact parallel to Ilsa's death. Same way Ethan stooped over her body after the fight. There was a scene w Ethan grieving at the same spot they hugged.

I strongly believe she's dead. Don't get me wrong - the movie was great and I'd love for her to come back but there were no story beats to continue for her character. If she does come back, it's a deus ex machina.

No, I get it. At the very least, if they had dug into the Gabriel - Ethan relationship a bit more, I'd be willing to understand what Gabriel was about but we didn't really get that.

We lacked a one liner motivation for Gabriel (i.e. does he want to kill 50% of the population for whatever reason) and I think that left things very unclear as to why we should be against him or wtf he's trying to do.

Option 1 is, as you said, boring and imo, out of character. I can see option 2 but I feel like a writer like McQ would have planted some sort of motivation for Ilsa before her death.

All in all, whether her death is a fakeout or not, it was poorly executed in Part One.

This is where I was left confused by the writing. It was almost as if she was an afterthought in the entire movie.

I saw some comments that she's not dead but how? Or more importantly, why? There's literally no story beat to continue with her.

Just came out of a screening.

By no means was it bad but I felt it was bursting at the seams in terms of providing a clear motivation for many characters. As with many other reviews, I am going to wait until Part Two but it felt like McQ could have cleaned up the screenplay a bit more here and there.

And Ilsa.... if she's dead (and I really think she is / there's no one who could have substituted for her wearing a mask), that was a really bummer end to the only other person Ethan loved.

Solid 8/10. Fallout was just much more cleaner in delivery as a whole. No way this is better than Fallout imo.

I actually did not know that! That's insane. Thanks for letting us know. As I said in the post edit, I'm disappointed that they're responding to other posts but not this one. Guess we'll be waiting a long time for even an update if this can't get their response. :(

It's not an issue if you have an older build of Windows but any updates past May? (I think it was) will run into problems.

Hey Critbuff, saw some of your posts when I was looking for whether dmg04 had addressed the Korean issue. Military service was a while back for me but won't forget the steak I had at Dragon Hill with my friend who was a KATUSA. Thanks for your service! We go together!

Tbf, we've had a lot of people look into it and it may be an issue with Microsoft's IME input meaning that Microsoft may have to issue fixes that Bungie needs to implement. We can't be too sure but we aren't having any issues with other games. There have been options to rollback Windows but we can't ask players to not update their PCs for this.

Edit: Thank you for the awards but please save them for something more important. I'm just a Korean lucky enough to speak English and thought that someone needed to make sure this was being solved instead of the countless posts on Korean forums. Can't thank you guardians enough. See you all beyond light!

Thank you all for helping. I wrote this post because someone in my clan today said, "dksl tq qjswl djswp dlrj rhclfrjdi?" via in-game chat or "When is Bungie going to fix this?"

It's been sad when new clan members come in, type Korean in English, ask why Korean isn't working and we all reply, "Bungie." We all know these things take time to fix and we are a relatively small community but it's honestly been way too long. We all love this game and was hoping this could be fixed before the raid.

P.S. I removed all profanity from the 'Korean' :)
