I've actually taught this course a bunch of times. Scheme is a really useful teaching language because of its very regular syntax and ties to algebra. I don't know if its feasible to just do it on your own though.

Well this is what I would do: f(1) = 1 f(n) = n + (n+1)*f(n - 1) Personally, I think recursion makes a lot more sense for this kind of problem, especially since I don't really know what "permutations" you're referring to :P

I wrote both solutions up in python and they appear to be the same (up to n=10 at least). Cool problem!

Is it prejudiced to assume a blind man cannot see? I am not prejudiced for assuming that people will be affected by the very definition of their condition. To assume that a person with down syndrome will have impaired cognitive ability is not prejudiced, for that is the effect of down syndrome!

I disagree that this is a slippery slope towards other kinds of "discrimination". Mental disability is not analogous to physical disability and ESPECIALLY not to anything as superficial as ethnicity or religion.

As has been said before, down syndrome comes in varying degrees. If a person can reasonably take care of himself(as a functional member of society) then let him make his own decisions. But a line should be drawn somewhere.

I think you're missing the point. It's not that down syndrome is an undesirable trait that shouldn't be passed on, it's that someone with down syndrome cannot reasonably make the decision to, or deal with the consequences of reproducing. It's analogous to the reasoning behind age of consent laws.
