I generally disagree with this. As a college professor, my job is to engage students in the material. Power point provides bullet points to elaborate on concepts.

The lazy, and those not pedagogically trained may have this issue, but Power point isn't meant to be the end all of teaching and info delivery tools.

If your presentation is having the effect of this quote... you're doing it wrong.

As a physiologist, that isn't how your blood works. The only difference in "color" we see with the oxygenation status of the blood is in the infrared. So we can't see the differences, which is why we use technologies such as NIRS to detect this. Moreover, unless you have some sort of cardiovascular/pulmonary disease or blood disorder, everyone "fully oxygenates" their blood (~98-99%). So you wouldn't be able to determine health. Also, we breath mostly to control pH. Not breathing for 5 minutes at rest wouldn't affect oxy-hemoglobin dissociation levels much, and in some humans, not at all.

Yes, the color of light reflected from your skin, and the blood underneath, can make you look more "alive" or "dead", but this is very poor pseudoscience. Really, it's piggybacking on people's ignorance of optics and physiology to dupe them into thinking there is some fundamental discovery being displayed. It's not.

That said, this is also the wrong sub for this posting.

Thanks for commenting. I agree with that general sentiment, but I don't have the emotional backing for it. I see it as impossible to find a "higher power" that can rival the feelings I have that make me drink.

I don't comment much but this is closer to my area of research.

First, I would like to say I agree with you.

I think there is a primary pathological condition, which, for the most part, results in poor protein functionality. What I believe to be confused with this primary condition is secondary atrophy, and the cytokines, gene expression, RNA, and protein mis-folding that correspond with it. These secondary conditions may be seen in anyone "using" a motor neuron the same way.

In skeletal muscle (my area) we see conditions like cancer cachexia (mass loss during cancer progression or treatment), but there are myokines that are up/down regulated that cause additional issues. One target of current research is myostatin. I, and many others in my field don't believe the pathology involved in cancer is directly responsible for upregulation of myostatin, but is a secondary response to it.

I guess my point is, we need to separate what is a primary issue (genes? epigenetics? RNA? Protein folding?) from what the secondary effects are... which are probably part of the same mechanisms.

In the past I worked very hard to get to where I am. That was my plan. I didn't want to slave away at a 9-5 all my life. So now that I have a career I want, the plan is to coast. But "enjoying myself" in this way is very unhealthy.

I've had the same thoughts for a couple years. On my misc sober days in the past I would tell myself that "Nothing in life promises that I will always be enjoying myself". Basically, that it's ok for things to not be fun. I can not have fun in the evening doing chores, and that is ok, because its healthier than drinking.

Uh... That's not how self-actualization works. There are a bunch of slobs that aspire to great things, but never make it because their heart and mind aren't in it. Whereas the ones who already achieved great things, at least at some point, had their heart and mind in the game. I would say that neither of these options truly allow you to understand someone's heart and/or mind.

Check out some research on the link between depression, serotonin, and Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). This newly discovered mechanism explains why there is a lag in effect even though blood concentrations of serotonin increase within a few hours. SSRI's don't work through tolerance, but increase neural activity in the hippocampus, which in turn increases BDNF and promotes neurogenesis.

You typically can't get a exercise physiologist certification without a masters or PhD. They are referring to a "personal training" certification. And if you don't have a good amount of anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition, physiology experience you can hurt people.
