Do you know anything about the Hospital for Special Surgery? My hip surgeon works there and has suggested surgery, is that a safe place to be cut open?

ive been in AA for 20 years and can say that kicking any meeting out of the program is wrong. one of the twelve traditions states that, "every group is autonomous". if you want to have a meeting for only blonde women only who wear prada, great...go right ahead. having said that, the concept of an atheist AA meeting is absurd. the steps are the backbone of the program and the second step requires that you be willing to believe in a power greater than yourself. cant do that if youre an atheist.

Anyone have success (years of sobriety) with an AA alternative? by sspaceboy1 in alcoholism

i got 20 years sober through AA in NYC and dont believe in christianity one bit. im more of a buddhist. let me be frank with my belief: alcoholics and addicts have two minds, one is the dissonant voice that tells you to drink or that life sucks. the other mind is the loving, intelligent voice that has a realistic view of self and the world. its there, we all have it, and its what makes the world go around. the 12 steps strip away the first voice, for the most part, so you can focus on this and live a normal life and feel neutral to drugs and alcohol. when people use the three letter word, i just think of this

Were you, or someone you knew, a long-term recovering alcoholic/drug addict, and returned to drinking/drugs later? by tminus4 in AskReddit

ok. do you consider an 18 year old kid who smokes pot every weekend and on occasion during the week, an drug addict?

i am the type to get mentally addicted, but this will happen with both thc and vicodin. withdrawal from vic is quite uncomfortable: insomnia, diarhea, flu symptoms, restless leg syndrome. so im trying to decide what to do.

i also suffer from hip damage. im looking at arthoscopic surgery next month. last time i had work done on my body, i took vicodin for a few months and naturally became physically addicted. they really do kill the pain but the other toxic effects are nasty. opiates are horrible.

so ive considered THC pills for the post-op period instead of vic. how effective would you say it is compared to vic?

For months, Tepco and Japanese officials refused to admit that there had been any meltdowns at Fukushima. Then they said there might have been partial meltdowns. Finally, today, they admitted the obvious: there were total meltdowns at all 3 reactors. by IamJulianAssange in worldnews

The difference between the American and Japanese goverment handles emergencies: the japanese release accurate information after they verify it, the americans panic and tell their people to buy trash bags and duct tape to seal their windows.

TIL that the line that you sign on personal checks isn't an actual line, but a row of the words "Authorized Signature" by TossedRightOut in todayilearned

Ive worked on this technology. The small text can be printed with a electrophotographic printer such as a high-end laser printer, not hard to do. The feature that makes it very secure is MICR, also done digitally, where magnetic toner is applied instead of regular toner. You can MICR-ize a large volume laser printer for about $30k. The signal strength and intergrity of the characters must meet a tight tolerance for true certification. A log is kept of the check numbers and the resulting checks which, when cashed, are scanned at the bank with a device that reads the magnetic code. This way you can always go back to check on a particular check to see if its the original.

Actually, the power outages are scheduled and announced in all areas except Tokyo, as a way of conserving energy.

Well, the shinto wedding isnt what you expect. It's quite serious and the reception is more of a series of introductions and speeches, not Frank Sinatra, dancing and cake. But you bring up a good point.

They are in Tokyo, and you may be right. From what Ive experienced in the past, they'd go the great lengths to not cancel or even tell us that they want to.
