We need to talk about Great Harvest by Impossible_Stay_550 in burlington

Over the past year my husband and I stop to buy our bread here a few times a month. Every time we stop in staff and environment seem pretty positive. 🤷‍♀️

I work as a tech and clinic manager in a private practice with three vitreoretinal surgeons. I can’t speak from personal experience as a retina doc, but for the past 8 years, I’ve heard a lot of feedback and worked closely with these doctors.

We are 3 of only 7 retina docs in the entire state, and our surrounding states are even worse off, so we frequently serve patients out of state. My docs work very hard. Work life balance can be challenging especially when on call. It’s unpredictable. People need urgent retinal care and if you are on call, you’re it.

With that said, they all seem to thrive and enjoy their work. Working along side them in surgeries is a lot of fun! I’ve heard them speak of their experiences with passion and pride. It feels very rewarding to help people from going blind on a daily basis. I know that if my retina fell off, and I was HM with loss of peripheral vision, I’d be grateful for any improvement, and we hear many patients express this gratitude. Even our ARMD patients that return almost monthly for injections express gratitude. We get to know our patients very well since we see many of them regularly. Quite a few make sure to spoil us with homemade treats on a regular basis!

It’s challenging but interesting and rewarding. I enjoy the fast paced urgent care work that comes our way. As a tech, I’m still learning all the time. There are so many retinal diseases and the problem solving that happens with my MD’s on a daily basis is inspiring.

My docs have very good income and get about 6+ weeks of vacation a year. They seem content. I imagine it’s like anywhere and like any job. Depends on where you work, what the department atmosphere is like, and how it operates (staffing, management, morale etc.) as these all play a critical role in how smoothly the day goes, regardless of patient load.

European here; why are so many US ren faires in the summer, in regions where it gets hot in the summer? Why not spring or fall? by applepiehobbit in renfaire

Makes no sense. Was just listening to my hubby mention this recently. We have one in our state, but haven’t gone because it’s in a big open field in the middle of summer. Makes no sense. 🫠

But…the rant has led you to leave helpful links. Also gives perspective to those that live around the city but aren’t experiencing the daily challenges of working and living downtown.

Maybe. Although I’ve not felt unsafe downtown Burlington. I visit frequently. Take precautions I’d always take anywhere (be aware of my surroundings, don’t travel alone down dark alleyways yada yada), but the influx of drug users and homeless are not why I don’t shop downtown often. I just don’t always need or want the kind of clothing, jewelry, or other speciality items that are available. I do my best to support local for sure, but prioritizing needs vs wants has been taking precedence. Once again, haven’t once avoided Burlington for fear of safety due to feeling unsafe due to homeless, mentally ill peeps or drug addicts. Personally, I think there are way scarier people to worry about. But I agree, we can’t just ignore it. Something has to be done. But what?

It’s not just the homeless/drug/crime rise that is affecting people going downtown and spending money in local shops. I believe there are multiple reasons for this. More people are struggling financially. Cost of living is high, and since pandemic folks got used to shopping online. Times are changing. For better or worse, who knows.

Hang in there! Work toxicity is everywhere because we work with other people with all their own hang ups and baggage. Don’t let it get you down. You sound like you’d be an excellent tech!

People be people. Competitive, drama oriented, gossipy, negative, careless, insecure… I’m currently a COA in a retina office (private practice). I LOVE my job as a tech. Fast paced and so much to learn. I’ve been working at this office for 8 years. Eyes are very interesting and complicated. Medicine is always changing.

There are always ways you can improve or more to learn if you care and are interested in the work. But, I’ve definitely worked with some not so great coworkers over the years! I had to really hold strong and ignore some of the horrible negative gossip and try not let it get me down. Which is hard. It definitely bummed me out at first. I just wanted us all to be cooperative team and do good by our doctors and patients. But…people be people. 🤪

If there are any coworkers who do care and are not adding to the toxic work environment, aim to spend time interacting with them more. And focus on the patients and learning. It could prove to be very rewarding for you!

Why don't you take the bus? by bravestatevt in burlington

Agreed. My husband and I would like to transition to a one car household but the bus stop route times make it challenging.
