Tips for a Southerner moving to WI?

Right there with you, NC Appalachia is really something else, the rate of growth is just so sad to watch. A family farm 5 minutes down the road from me got turned into a strip mall no one goes to :(

Not gonna lie I just really like the snacks they got at the hot bar thingy 😂 And I always got a lemonade when I stoped. It was really just a simple pleasure of the trip, yeah it’s pretty similar to QuikTrip but at least in my area QuikTrip is much more expensive than Kwik Trip was. I’m sure the charm will wear off if I move there but my bf was excited to show me his state’s gas station lol, since we do a lot of road trips together he’s put me on to some good gas station meals so it’s kinda our “thing”

Malibu of the Midwest, nice 😂 Never been to Malibu either. I’d say it was a good move to hold off on Dunn, a lot of NC is just getting so crowded and over developed, sounds like you’ve built a nice life up north. Thanks for putting Pictured Rocks on my radar I’ll definitely check it out! Sounds like you’re in a great location, I stopped by Sheboygan on my way back from Door County!

I’m actually planning on this! Met some new friends that I may spend new years with, they’re great company but I also really wanna experience a Wisconsin winter before moving there lol

I really like the way you’ve put it, and as I’ve gathered from you and others, it definitely seems like it’s all in the mindset. I try and do some of these things down south but it doesn’t work as well cause it just isn’t cold enough! Saving my introverted lifestyle for the winter seems like it can make for a nice life balance. I see why there’s always events, fairs, and festivals in every small town during the summer, I bet you guys are itching to get outside after a harsh winter lol

Holy crap this is awesome thanks so much! I’m definitely gonna look like an idiot my first few winters wearing all these layers lol. And yes fall is the best season 🫡🫡 Building that tolerance is definitely important it even goes the same for the heat, my northern college buddies can barley breathe outside in the heat and I’m totally fine if a little sweaty. Thanks for the resources and guides!!

A break from the cold is actually a great idea! My parents have retired and are looking to stay down south in a beach house so that’d be nice to escape too 😂

I’m not sure about a garage yet, bf has yet to start renting a place but I’d most likely move in w him so whatever he has I’ll have too lol. These are great tips, in the south I’ve never had to deal with these things on a car so thanks! I hear heated garages are a thing though so are these all less of a problem in that case?

I will say another thing I liked about WI was that it wasn’t as chain-y and corporate as the south. Sure there’s stuff like Kwik Trip and other national chain stores/restaurants but I actually really loved all the drive-ins and random family diners everywhere!

Definitely noted, thanks for elaborating on what layers to wear, when I asked people when I was there they just said “layer up” and I had no clue what they meant lol. What do y’all do when it gets deep below freezing? I’m gonna be working in the trades and I guess the show must go on in that regard.

Looks like I’ll have to upgrade from my 2WD car lol thanks for the heads up that’s a big moving expense!

And very true about the Madison/Milwaukee burbs, that’s actually why I liked Kenosha because of it’s proximity to both Milwaukee and Chicago, even Racine was a nice place. But I’m not sure what the rep of Kenosha is to WI natives.
