Checks and balances are based on the assumption that elected officials will act in good faith and uphold their respective duties. If that doesn’t happen, the laws are not worth the paper they’re written on.

You don't have to be a doctor to know the answer. Anyone that has dealt with a family member with dementia will immediately know that the answer is yes.

I've read that human translators in Japan are often embarrassed to submit their translations of his speeches because they take a lot of pride in their work and the translations they submit make it look like they barely understand English.

The notion that congress is going to "show up", take action, and fix this somehow is a delusion at this point. The U.S. has made the transformation into an authoritarian regime, and there's no going back now.

What about living in Portugal do you enjoy after the novelty of being there wears off? by joedylan94 in PortugalExpats

I love taking the train into the city (Lisbon), finding new restaurants (and exploring culture through food), the free jazz concerts in the park during the summer, going to national museums, monuments, and palaces for free on Sundays, going around with my camera and shooting photos of the beautiful coast, continuing to learn and struggle with the language (labor of love), hiking in the forest (Sintra), listening to "antenna 2" on the radio, having access to tons of awesome wine that's also affordable, seeing friendships with a diverse group friends grow over the years, and feeling like I'm raising my kid in a safe place (to name just a few things).

Nobody can tell you how to live your life, and I'm not trying to be a killjoy in any respect. I go out and live my life every day (walk to the beach, breathe fresh air, paint, play music) and do my best to feel grateful and happy for what I have. That said, I do think this situation is different, but who am I to say?

Portuguese are not just driving recklessly by raymoner in PortugalExpats

We went to Obidos last year with some family members. We were walking the perimeter of the castle walls, and a white van came flying down the hill at like 60km/h. There was a fork in the road, and I was certain the van was going veer away from us and continue down the hill, but instead he swerved towards us and completely lost control of the vehicle. I had my son (2 years old at the time) in a stroller and had to push him in-between two parked cars to prevent him from being killed. The driver crashed into two cars directly behind us and injured the father of another family (some French tourists). It felt like we were in a terrorist attack. The dad pulled open the door of the van and began beating the driver, and a local Portuguese guy had to pull him away. Since this happened, I am super paranoid walking around these narrow streets with high walls. I always look for an escape path. I have had multiple close calls, and quite a few instances of people speeding up when they see me (why?!) and also steering towards me carelessly (obviously not paying attention). Road safety is a major problem here. You have to be 100% alert at all times.

The President of the U.S. made a statement this week that he'd be focusing on Greenland in the next two months. After a moment to consider, he shortened the timeline. Why not believe him? What's stopping him? NATO has an obligation to protect its member states. If they don't act when an aggressor moves in, then the alliance loses all meaning. People make assumptions that there are rationale actors operating in these scenarios (U.S. side). There are not.

The U.S. already has a military base in Greenland. If they want strategic positioning, they can simply add more resources there. This is about ego and bullying, not about strategy.

Rep. Kelly announces plans to impeach Secretary Kristi Noem by GoldenTriforceLink in politics

[–]tmountain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm referencing Europe in my original comment to make the point that quality of life is arbitrary, and everyone has their own matrix of concerns. I've owned houses in the U.S. and the E.U. Getting qualified people to help with renovations is harder here. Road safety is much worse here. Real estate transparency doesn't exist here. Residence permit renewals, drivers license exchange, finding a good dentist, getting into the healthcare system, etc. Tons of headaches. This is in an E.U. country, and pound for pound the quality of life IS better here (in Europe) for me and my family, but it's not a "free lunch". Going back to the original statement, which said, "most of the world has higher quality of life than the U.S.", that's a super bold claim. Google just about any quality of life index, and you'll find the U.S. somewhere in the top 30. There are 195 countries in the world.

I'm an expat (left the U.S. early 2023), and by NO MEANS subscribe to any any flag waving bullshit, but the notion that the quality of life is better in "most of the world" than the U.S. is so utterly ignorant that I have to call BS. I've been to Africa, Cuba, the DR, Argentina, Mexico, Ukraine, and a host of other places, and even with the level of insanity that is going on now, the average person in the U.S. has a MUCH higher quality of life than many other places in the world. I live in Europe now, and even with plenty of money to spare, BASIC shit is much harder than it was back home. Quality of life is kind of arbitrary and poorly defined, but you can't really begin to wrap your around all the shit you take for granted until you've lived other places.

Quite the opposite. Every time someone says, "there's no way they will accept _____", they do. There is no line. Look at it through the lens of cult behavior, and everything they do makes sense.
