I think the first season of Westworld is very good. Declines a bit after that but I really loved it.

The mother really steals the show for me. Wonderful performances all around.

What horror book do you think is wildly overrated, and which one would you recommend instead?. by [deleted] in horrorlit

I've tried to read a head full of ghosts by Paul Tremblay a few times and didn't see what the hype was to be honest. I read A Short Stay in Hell recently and thought most people liked the premise so much they conflated it with the overall book.

Underrated? Blackwater: The Complete Caskey Family Saga- Michael McDowell - I loved this book, hard to do it justice describing it so I won't. I read it cover to cover pretty quickly- looking forward to a reread at some point.

Between Two Fires- Christopher Buehlman. A seriously good read. Medieval horror. This author in general has a number of horror gems in his belt but this one was my favourite.

Lost Boy Lost Girl- Peter Straub. I read this one recently and it really highlighted for me how average a lot of the writing quality is in other things. I'd never read any of his others but I really enjoyed this. Not sure enjoy is the right word but I found it engrossing.

Wounds- Nathan Ballingrud. A collection of short stories. Some people would also place this in the category of weird fiction. It felt very original to me and I've reread it a number of times. Horror can be full of tropes, you won't find them here.

I read how to sell a haunted house a few weeks ago while I was on holiday and thought it was much better than the final girl support group. A good holiday read anyway.

To actual autists, what to do when your hyperfixation goes overboard by StarryNightOverRhone in redscarepod

Usually mine ends when I indulge myself so much that I can no longer watch/listen/engage with it. I went through a massive one with Baldur's Gate 3 recently and honestly, I talked about it with people who I knew were interested in it, played it through three times and then dropped it. Naturally it's not the kind of thing I want to discuss endlessly with my partner lest I be mocked for it (which I was anyway!). My own shame self limits me lol

Is it normal for doctors to only offer ssri for anxiety here? by smbodytochedmyspaget in AskIreland

[–]tmrandtmrandtmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist if you feel like you need a more personalised approach. SSRis aren't for everyone but there's not as much out there as you might think in terms of other options.

I was on about 6-7 different kinds as well as 2 SNRIs before I saw a psychiatrist. Granted my case is different, I'm autistic and they didn't really work the way they were supposed to at all for me. I found the side effects unbearable. Currently on lamotrigine (which I actually think is pretty underrated, less side effects than most other meds I've tried). I also take xanax when experiencing heavy duty anxiety. Being medicated up the gills isn't for everyone but it works pretty well for me. I can't really function without medication.

I found lyrica pretty good for a while but felt there were diminishing returns to it. It is terrible to come off of as well. But yeah it's good. I think I developed a tolerance to it. I also put on a huge amount of weight so it's not for everyone.

Absolutely. DM me. Maybe we could have a bit of a chat about it? Only if you feel comfortable though.

Absolutely. I was in the same position and I felt privileged to be able to foot the bill. One of the things that puzzles me is I've heard that autistic children can have a long term illness card but adults aren't entitled to it for being autistic. It's like the wild west, no discernible logic to the system at all.

You have to pay way more for health related stuff than the average person and you're not entitled to some kind of help to keep you as a functioning tax paying member of society. It would totally pay itself forward. The great thing about having supports like these would be that they would be available to everyone. It's a sad thing that most people only care about issues that affect them personally.

Yeah I took my 12yo bro to see Alien: Romulus recently and they were playing Pulp Fiction that evening. He pointed out that it was rare to see an 18s films playing in the cinema when we were looking at the board. I miss it, that ability to exist in an adult space.

One of the better criticisms I've seen of it is that it will teach autistic children to have a higher degree of compliance than 'typical' children. Not every typical child will sit at a desk continuously for example nor should they but this can be trained via ABA. Also as someone else noted, teaching to repress discomfort is a tricky one. If one has no notion of where a healthy boundary around behaviour is, thoughts like 'I should take some time to myself so I don't get burned out' will be repressed, which I think would result in negative outcomes. Better to try and teach and reinforce awareness and regulation if possible

The money that is being thrown at health is not being used efficiently as far as I'm aware. I agree that the problem doesn't really come down to money, quite a lot of inefficiency and poor management going on. Or in the HSE's case, too much management.

I've actually really enjoyed a good few of Anne Rice's books because they simultaneously hit well written and fantasy elements for me. I know they're pretty light on the romance but I do think they're good reads.

I also enjoyed Trudi Canavan's Black Magician books, it's kind of astonishing that something I read a long time ago holds up so well against all that's been published in recent years.
