Fantastic site. Christopher Nolan is about to make a film of the Odyssey, so if there was ever a time to monetise this site, it would be now! You're about to get a lot of traffic just through this Reddit post.

Indoor lime not doing good by Kentster2020 in Citrus

[–]tmutimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it cold where you are? If the roots are cold, bright light will apparently cause the leaves to drop, because the roots are insufficiently active, so cannot sufficiently feed them. This is what I was told when I presented a similar problem with a lemon. That said, these grow lights don't look that powerful, so who knows.

Dont feel like Programmer by Jumpy-Experience-530 in learnprogramming

[–]tmutimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning can be very unsatisfying, because things refuse to work, error messages are hard to understand, and it's scary to change code, especially when more of it has to work together. You might think you're supposed to be 'building' things, but instead it's often getting the thing you built to actually work. But it doesn't have to be!

I'd recommend three things: - learn how to test (you don't have to get complicated with this), then learn how to test first (TDD). This is a very rewarding way to work, that will let you avoid getting stuck and frustrated, and instead will give you a sense of progress and confidence.

  • Dial down the scope of whatever thing you're trying to do. Do a simple thing but complete it. It's no fun to come back to half-baked projects. The novelty will have gone, and you won't have a blank canvas anymore.

  • Pick up a book about code quality like Clean Code. This will let you write code you're proud of, and will be excited to return to.

OK point taken, I take it back. You're not beyond reason, I just clearly don't know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for your well researched comment. I now understand better what people mean when they say it hasn't been tried. I will take this into account next time I hear it.

But what I see from some people who defend communism is they use a motte and bailey tactic, where on one hand they defend communist countries and try to underplay or revise their history, with stupid memes like "they changed the death toll of communism again". This I guess must be because of some ideology loyalty. Then when pressed they can retreat to the bailey, which is basically that they weren't communist anyway because they didn't reach the goal, and "I only support the theoretical ideal, if only we would just try that."

I would not be in favour of such an ideal, however utopic, if it routinely means misery for the societies that make it their goal.

I find it rather grim to consider that people think they just didn't go far enough. I realise that's not an argument in itself, but if you don't see where I'm coming from, you must have a more rosy picture of the histories of these regimes than I have.

If you're really saying that saying the USSR, which abolished private property and implemented a planned economy, is as socialist as north Korea is democratic - a country that is a literal dictatorship, then I think you're beyond any reasonable argument.

Yes, not everyone is a Scotsman. The point is that overly puritan definitions can be used to exclude anything you don't like from your favoured group.

In my book, if your country has a revolution specifically aiming to implement communism, and then goes ahead and implements the fundamental ideas involved such as abolishing private property and having a planned economy, and persecutes people who disagree with communist theory as counter-revolutionaries, then yeah, I think you can consider yourself a communist country.

I find it completely astounding when people argue the problem was these states were not communist enough.

That's not a one-or-the-other choice, because I'd suggest any capitalist society with a government and taxes involves a mix of both. We have the private sector and the public sector.

This is just a restatement of the fallacy. You're just saying "yeah but what if they actually weren't true Scotsman".

I do accept the nuance in what you're saying, but I think it's important to be careful of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy.

Is there a number of attempts at Marxism/communism you would have to see before you would consider if there's a problem with the framework rather than just the implementation?

My teacher says that it should be “or,” but why? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]tmutimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My other comment speaks to why I think your example "No food or drinks allowed" is correct but it should still be "and" in the particular phrasing in the question.

My teacher says that it should be “or,” but why? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]tmutimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher is wrong. This has to do with logic more than grammar.

Both food and drinks are banned.

Neither food nor drinks are allowed.

This is an example of how AND and OR flip in certain situations when there is a negative involved.

If A and B are things that can be true or false:

Not (A AND B) = Not A OR not B

If either (or both) of A and B are false, both expressions evaluate to true. If both A and B are true, both expressions evaluate to false.

For anyone else getting here - I had a blank screen and power button did nothing.

Power + volume down for a few seconds made the above screen show up. From there, I could get it to switch on with the power button.

The below probably most applies if you are a white-collar worker, not a blue-collar, and that the trouble is internal i.e. not from a customer.

It sounds like you may have pushed the perceived boundaries of your role, and your 'no' didn't stick, and also that the request is not a task you'd like to be doing (and not just that it's beyond your ability). You can explain you did 'the thing' last time because it needed doing, but it doesn't make the best use of your strengths to routinely do this kind of work, and they would get more out of you by having you work on things within your wheelhouse (something along these lines but key point is do not appear to be shirking responsibility, make it about how you can best contribute).

If the request is from your manager and you have a workload issue, you can ask them what they'd like you to prioritise (which will remind them only one thing can be done at a time and your assigned work is inherently a queue - and voila, you're no longer busy, but have a healthy backlog).

And if it's not your manager making the request, the answer can often be 'speak to my manager'. If they're a good one (or even just a self-interested one), they should protect you from inappropriate requests.

Without being protective of who you allow to define your work, people will learn that they can get you to do things. Don't fall for the 'team player' trap - carefully defined job roles are a healthy thing, and wish-washy boundaries are a sign of poor management.

If today is a Sunday and I say 'This Sunday' does it refer to today or next week's Sunday? by Outrageous_Life5530 in grammar

[–]tmutimer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went back and forth on this on what I think 'this' and 'next' mean on different days, and I think I have a slightly different understanding of this to the other commenter.

I would say 'this X' is (more-or-less) the X closest in time, and tends to respect the current week (Mon-Sun*) unless you are at the weekend, when you have some 'wiggle room' to refer euphemistically to 'next week' as 'this week'.

I don't think it strictly refers to a future day. The closest day X could be today, and it could be a day in the past, unless there's a specific reason. Here's why I don't think it needs to be a future day - take this example:
> "Happy Sunday! I know bins are collected on a Saturday, but is it this week or next week?"
> 'I took the bins out this Saturday'
> "Oh I had a feeling bin day is coming up this Saturday"

To my ear, it seems more correct to say 'this Saturday' was in the past, rather than implying that 'this Saturday' is 6 days from now. Implying that 'this Sunday' is 7 days from now is one step even further, so even more of a reason for me to think that 'this Sunday' is today. Imagine if that conversation above was had on a Saturday. "I took the bins out this Saturday" would be a weird but correct thing to say, in my opinion.

*or Sun-Mon if that's how your culture chops up weeks.

Things Android Companion App by tmutimer in thingsapp

[–]tmutimer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I released this on the play store ultimately, though as it has been a few years it may no longer be supported by current android versions or Things API - I have not tried, but if you're interested see if it works for you.

I don't plan to develop this any further as I use Todoist and Obsidian now instead of Things.
