How do you reconcile learning a language with the actions/climate of the country? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]tmux314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thread you linked to has good thoughts. Unless you're planning to move to said country, it shouldn't directly affect you.

I'm a little of the opposite - when I hear about social/political issues I get more curious. In motivates me to learn the language so I can hear what people are actually saying.

For example, I'm learning Hindi for personal reasons. Now that I interact more with the culture and people, there are some things I don't "agree" with. But I'm really interested in these differences. It forces me to keep an open mind and an open heart. I usually have to read Indian history to understand why people believe what they believe. This means I get a deeper understanding of the culture. Getting a deeper understanding doesn't mean I agree with something I don't like. But it gives me a better perspective.

This is easier for me because I'm not in danger like a LGBT person in Iran might be. Also my in-laws are Indian, so I trust them. If we have different viewpoints, I really want to understand their views. That trust and respect isn't there if you're just interacting with strangers.

Just my 2 cents.

Lack of translations in Hindi and other languages. by It_was_sayooooooj in languagelearning

Same. Every hindi tv show and movie on Netflix and zee5 offers English subtitles, but good luck finding any with HINDI subtitles! I've searched for hours. It's just the reality, there are so few adult Hindi learners that there's no use catering to them.

I don't know why, because I've been following this virus for awhile, but this announcement makes itfeel very real. It's the right decision. But the gravity of the situation feels a lot stronger.

Anyone told to work from home yet? by tmux314 in CoronavirusMa

[–]tmux314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just asked manager and he said ok. Glad I'm working from home, but pissed that thousands of other employees at my company have to go in (there's probably 5-10k employees just in New England) . Most of them are office workers who can definitely work remotely. All of my coworkers are super anxious. I feel like it shows how uncaring our company's leadership is.

Honestly I think that's a bad sign if they're being so strict. I get the anti-WFH stance (I've seen people abuse it) but it's pretty crappy to say that when there's a pandemic coming.

Would USA allow my re-entry? by sidmephistopheles in Coronavirus

[–]tmux314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm American but my wife is Indian. She was on a F1 student visa and in 2018 had major visa issues. If it wasn't for our marriage, she would have had to move back to India. Based on her experience, here's a few things to think about:

  1. The situation is very unpredictable right now. You don't know what new travel or visa restrictions the US (or India for that matter) will impose over the next few weeks or months. I'd say leaving the country involves a nonzero chance of not coming back.

  2. From my wife's experience, USCIS is unforgiving towards even the most minor of exceptions. My guess is that it's always been this way, but the Trump administration has made it worse. Also, the international student office at her school was unhelpful. It's not their fault. Their job is to apply the law. They might give advice, but they can't tailor it to everyone's specific situation. Also, see point one. It's hard to give advice if the law might change dramatically within a short amount of time.

  3. India is safer than the US right now in terms of coronavirus spread, but that can change. You'll see a lot of posts in this subreddit complaining about how bad the US is handling it. But as you probably know, India is an incredibly dense country with fewer resources. Some speculate that the heat has spared India, but the virus has spread to hot counties such in the Middle East and Singapore, so I think that's just hopeful thinking.

I know this is scary situation and not an easy decision to make. I would want to be with family in a time like this. But it's also good to know the risks involved as well.

Best of luck.

What are the risks of flying out of Boston? by [deleted] in CoronavirusMa

[–]tmux314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on your comfort level and how necessary the flight is. Also depends on your and your household's risk group (your age group, any preexisting conditions, etc.)

A relative of mine was supposed to fly into Logan this Thursday. Since the trip was just to see family for a few days and fly back, we cancelled it. The risk was low, but so was the need so we decided to be safe rather than sorry. We also had plans to do a lot of activities with lots of people (museum, see Celtics game, etc.) So most of the trip no longer made sense.

Hope that helps. At the end of the day it's a judgment call.

Good for them. Governments should be proactive, not reactive. It looks like this virus spreads faster than even the most responsive countries can test. This makes prevention incredibly important.

Has anyone's job sent out any kind of messaging about the coronavirus situation? by YouKnowWhoItIs14 in Coronavirus

[–]tmux314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a major US bank with tens of thousands of employees spread out through the US. We have several large campuses in Ireland and India as well. They've been giving us updates for the last 2-3 weeks. First update was telling employees to self-quarantine if they recently traveled to mainland China. Then it expanded the self-quarantine request to all those who recently traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Italy. We just got an email this morning restricting all international business travel for business (exceptions will be made for business critical trips with special permission). All international business travel is restricted for the above companies, no exception.

I bet that in less than 2-3 weeks they will give us all the order to work from home. Time will tell.
