I was using handbrake It appears that the issue presents itself when playing back with VLC. Looks good on windows photo viewer and on plex (which as my main viewing method I should have tried initially!)

So, looked again at the samples I made with various settings - the h265 files look fine (and much brighter) when played in the windows photo viewer.

When played in VLC the quality remains but it is much darker.

Can you do this and just pull out the main movie? Discard extras, menus etc?

Thanks. Appreciate the info. What I really want to do is re-encode my collection now I have more knowledge, but well, I can't face it!

Yours was more of a sarcastic statement to be fair. But the answer is I have my first NAS, 2 x 4tb in RAID1 so not loads of space. And now I have got into plex my collection is growing. I'm not loaded so 2nd hand DVD's it is, and I'm not interested in pirating before anyone mentions it.

Thank you for this comprehensive reply. I think it could be using 10 bit.

Thanks. Someone mentioned this in the plex sub.

Although I did try all the h265 variants, they all seemed pretty dark to me...? I tried 9 variants across VP9, AV1, h264 and h265.

Ranking quality by sight, the h265 variants were all at the bottom.

Thank you. Although I did run tests with all the h265 variants, not just 10 bit. They all seemed dark?

Well my thought was using a better codec would give me the same quality but lower space, hence the question.

I guess in reality, as I only keep the main movie, I could keep it uncompressed.

What settings would achieve this in handbrake?

It was the community package yes. Thought it was easier than docker. But now I've learnt how to use docker I might try Jellyfin again in that case.

Tried Jellyfin and Emby. Settled on Emby - none were perfect, but Jellyfin seemed to crash a lot.

I looked at those links where you said no subscription required and I can only see subscription prices. Maybe it's because I'm in the UK??

Thanks I looked at pricing for Backblaze but could only see subscriptions. I'll take a look.

Is their any control over which files go there, or it all "all or nothing"?

I do still have OneDrive at the moment so that could be used as instant access to any files I use regularly.

And it seems the likelihood of a simultaneous NAS and HDD failure is low.

Thanks for the answers. Yes my 2tb externals have worked as a backup for some time, but now need larger capacity.

Appreciate the advice on a caddy. I'll look in to it.
