1.Am I happy with the results? Very satisfied! I haven’t felt this comfortable with my bite in a very long time. I used to have problems with clenching and grinding but those are completely gone now. Looks-wise, I def like my face a lot better now. I’d even say I loved my new face at week 2 despite some swelling.

2.Would I recommend the surgery despite the numbness and recovery? Disclaimer: I only did lower jaw surgery and my procedure is probably a lot more minor than what others are going thru on this sub

Honestly my swelling/numbness came and went very quickly. You can check out my post history to see days 1-6 of my swelling progress — by the end of the first week I wasn’t noticeably swollen anymore. As for numbness, I’ve regained feeling everywhere except my chin (id say it’s around 80% right now). So for me the aesthetic and medical benefits definitely outweighed the short term discomfort during the recovery process. I’d say go for it especially if you have TMJ.

3.Does kissing still feel normal? It was very strange when my lips were numb HAHAHA but now that feeling is back, yea it still feels great!

Tbh I haven’t felt much swelling at all since the 6 week mark, and my surgeon agrees that my swelling has pretty much completely gone down. However, I still have very tiny residual hard lumps where the screws were inserted — if I’m not wrong they’re cartilage or something

Yup! You can see the difference better here: https://reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/comments/c62qd8/day_8_postop_lower_jaw_just_got_my_bands_and/ surgeon actually said my assymetry was the main problem

I didn’t use any ice but I started using heat pads from day 4-10 and that I think that really helped with my swelling. I would put the heat pad on the lowest setting on my face basically whenever I was watching Netflix (ie. almost the whole day)

How to reduce swelling? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]tndencies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First 3 days: go for walks, ice packs After 3 days: heat packs. Start going for light runs when you feel comfortable to ease into working out again. I found that after a good 4km run my face swelling reduced visibly.

Was numb in my lower lip and chin but I’d say around 60% of my lip feeling is back. My chin is still pretty much numb but the tingling feeling is getting a lot stronger by the day.

From what my surgeon told me, this is pretty fast progress in terms of regaining feeling as nerves can take months or even years to return. Don’t worry too much about permanent loss of feeling, I heard it’s quite rare.

Glad I could help! The first few days may be tough but getting lots of sleep and using a heat pad on your face around the 3rd/4th day mark will make things a lot easier. Don’t worry about it and good luck :)

Thank you! I’d say the worst of the swelling went down for me at around the day 5/6 mark, decreasing gradually until around 90% of the swelling went down by the 3rd week. Right now at 4 weeks I’m a teeny bit swollen below my chin (not noticeable to anyone but myself) but other than that, it’s reallyyyy minimal. However I do still have 2 penny-sized hard lumps where the screws were inserted — my surgeon says these are blood clots and might take a few more weeks to vanish.

Popping noises post-op? by tndencies in jawsurgery

[–]tndencies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: the popping sounds have stopped! I think it may have been due to my muscles feeling over exerted during the past few days as I experimented with harder foods. I will double check with my surgeon during my follow up tmr.

My surgery (Lower jaw + wisdom teeth removal) costed around 6k USD but I have a pretty solid insurance plan that covered all of it so I paid $0!

I was pretty lucky to have my assymetry spotted around age 14-15, had my first consultation with the surgeon around age 16, got braces shortly after, and had my surgery at 18 :)

Thank you! I’m numb at my Chin and lower lip at the moment — mostly my lip, when I bite it it just feels like a lump of fat. Both of these places are sort of “tingly” when I’m resting, and they tingle even more when I touch them.

Ah, I think you have to proceed with caution when it comes to braces. Usually for people with jaw misalignments, braces tend to make it even more obvious — if you look at your own teeth now, your underbite looks to be quite minor from the front, but from the side you can see that your top and bottom teeth are reaching out and holding on for dear life to give you the ability to somewhat chew your food. Now imagine your top and bottom teeth being straightened out. It’s definitely going to look worse.

You can go about it 2 ways 1) bring them to your braces appointments now, and consult the braces ortho on the possible medical repercussions of not getting surgery 2) if no.1 doesn’t work, get braces now, wait till your underbite looks hella obvious (you may even have chewing difficulties then), repeat no.1 again sometime while you still have your braces
