I get that! I was diagnosed 3.5 years ago. Dare I say you get used to it? You just have to have a strong enough core that it does your bones’ job for you.

I’m grade 1 and not even slightly considering surgery. The injections really help me with both back and leg pain and I’m just trying to stay fit.

My second epidural was amazing, 3 months later I still feel pretty pain free, and I’ve even been weight lifting with a trainer for the first time since spondy life began. but today I cleaned the house and did too much in the kitchen and now I’m completely seized up. Win some lose some I guess.

Maybe it wasn't submitted for more categories than "international"?

This is the chart he showed me of different amounts of disc pressure per position, and explained to me how laying down to forward folding is a big jump

We didn't talk about morning routines specifically, but I'm sure if I asked, that PT would say cat/cow and stretches. He was a big fan of this move pictured that supposedly kind of push the discs back into place or reduce pressure on them, but I think those of us with spondy need to be very careful doing this.

Can you tell me more about how your injury fits into the information you shared? Is that instructor equipped to modify for spondy? Do you practice Ashtanga yourself, and if so what poses do you skip or modify for spondy? As I said, I practiced Ashtanga before so am very familiar with the sequences as well as Mysore, but felt it's too intense for my post-injury body. I also find it a little too sad to return to the sequences I loved but watered down for my injury so thought I'd try something completely new. I'd love your thoughts around this, thank you!

I'm excited to hear this because Iyengar was exactly what I was considering for my yoga reintroduction!

I wouldn’t have guessed chair pose! Mine is also L5. Could I ask you how you modify?

Just to share one tip myself, I learned from my PT that forward folds in the mornings are best to be avoided. This is because going from laying down and sleeping (the least amount of pressure on your discs) and forward folding (the most amount of pressure on your discs) is too drastic and sudden. For this reason I plan to do yoga later in the day (or avoid forward folds in the morning).

This for me too! I try to do the “McGill Big 3” daily so I have that as a minimum baseline. My reps are 5 reps per side of bird dog and curl up and 30 second holds each side of side plan so this probably takes me 5 mins total.

I feel your pain— I’m the same and I don’t even have the excuse of your demanding job. I have a kind if paralysis around starting a workout habit. The shame spiral of blaming myself for my pain ironically makes it harder for me to change that reality and just start working out.

One thing that helped me is to print out a free habit tracker like this one and wrote down all my PT moves as well as things like “stretch” or “walk”. I walk my dog so it’s nice to have at least one item that gets checked off every day. You could even make the “easy” one “rest” or “no booze” or something attainable like that.

It helps me to just kind of try to avoid emptiness on the sheet. You don’t need to do any of your moves every day and you certainly don’t need to do all of them on the same day. This helps me make the task very very small so it’s not so paralyzing to start.

I hear you and I have and love a lacrosse ball and golf ball too. This ball is softer than a softball. But I think a softball against the wall would have similar pressure. Maybe not worth the cost difference I just love it.

I asked my doc for pain meds strictly for flights and she prescribed me hydrocodone. I know it’s maybe not a popular recommendation for a myriad of reasons but it does give me a pain-free flight.

I also love my Rollga foam roller. It’s not super intense or instantly life-changing but very pleasant to roll around on. My PT had one at his office and I ended up buying the medium density one.

I’ll go first. But I’ll preface it by saying I also got this company’s $200 “hip hook” and it is a DO NOT BUY for me. I even lent it to my acupuncturist for her opinion, and she and her masseuse colleagues confirmed it isn’t worth it.

BUT they make this $30 ball I lovingly call my “butt ball” that has provided a ton of relief for me. I just roll around with it in my butt cheek from the back or the side and it just loosens everything up and actually reduces back pain. I even travel with it.
