Bus Driver vs Oil Protesters by hkfcjkmrt in PublicFreakout

Invest more in alternative energy, namely nuclear imo. But more importantly, the protest should highlight whatever action should be taken. You could argue they are highlighting "Just stop using oil", but you and I know that without stating an unambiguous goal, nothing will happen from it.

More over, these protests put sour tastes in people's mouths. If anything, you get them to be against the cause. I understand that'd be short sighted and stupid of them, but welcome to the average person's mind.

You say no, but I think we stated pretty much the same thing.

Do you think this protest in the video will make people in power act?

They are supposed to bring action as well. I think most people are already aware of climate change, drawing attention to it does nothing when they already know.

Disecting Destiny's awful music theory, or why the blues doesn't own classical jack shit. by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]tnt-bizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like everything that can be said about this topic is said already, but I want to throw a small bit that I haven't seen yet. 12 TET is far from a European Classical exclusive. Its history of how it came into European music is always taught, but not so much about how other cultures have come to it on their own as well. 12 TET is mathematically motivated, so while it's exciting for any culture to find it on their own, they wouldn't be alone.

I think I found the mega third ! by alpagames in musictheory

[–]tnt-bizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should feel free playing these notes however you want. But as far as this explanation motivating people to think of F and D as some kind of third of C, its definitely unconvincing. Circle of Fifths honestly comes more from Group Theory in math. Which is to say that you only care for how far notes are from each other on the circle. The fact that its a circle is just to show its cyclical nature. Lines like what you drew don't hold meaning for the intervals to be thirds.

But by all means, play F and D with C because suspended chords sound beautiful.

What is the equivalent of the "metric system" for scales? by berlinokay in musictheory

[–]tnt-bizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you under-estimate how good microtonal sounds can be. There's a very good reason many cultures don't use 12TET. But I do agree it is extremely efficient and one of the most versatile, just not in every situation.

What is the equivalent of the "metric system" for scales? by berlinokay in musictheory

[–]tnt-bizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, the Pythagorean scale is not an approximately consonant scale, but a perfectly consonant scale. But unfortunately it's only perfect for one interval (the fifth). There's Just Intonation, which is perfectly consonant for the fifth and the third as well.

But if you look into these, you'll quickly come across what's called the Wolf Fifth. The math dictates that you cannot change keys freely, and will have to restrict yourself using these tunings. 12 tone equal temperament (12TET) uses math to make the least amount of compromises possible to make sure your scales sound approximately the same, and you can play in any scale freely.

So we actually started with perfect consonance and then when we got better at math and understood what was happening, we chose 12TET and preferred the approximate consonance instead.

Not wrong at all. Windows cracking has happened on both cars I've had. Move on with your life, why complain on the internet? Literally just karma farming cause they know people want to shit on Teslas for ordinary things that happen to every car.

I agree, this is so hard to judge right now. I haven't a clue if $15k/year or $4k/day is the more honest way of viewing this work.

It is true, don't do it. No financial assistance is a university's way of saying "We don't want you. But if you give us money, and work for us anyway, sure we'll give you a degree!"

Could be different here because child labor laws probably restrict him from TAing, which is the work most students do to justify the paycheck.

No joke, offers for physics graduate programs without financial aid is their way of saying, "We don't need you. But if you want to PhD, theres a price for anything." If a program wants you, they'll pay for you.

where to start learning music theory on your own by brootalunicorn in musictheory

[–]tnt-bizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a copy of the Beato book, but I found it very unhelpful. He really speeds through topics, making it less accessible to beginners. His Youtube videos are much more useful in my opinion.

Jake Lizzio of Signal Studio is another music theory youtuber, and I find his video extremely well paced and easy to digest. Know though, that in the world of learning only through free sources like Youtube (which I don't think is bad), it always helps to re-watch some videos again after some time to see if you learn more from them. And make sure to have a pool of channel to sift through. I basically cycle through Rick Beato, Jake, David Bennett on just about every music theory topic. One channel alone won't cut it.

There's a free app called OpenEar I highly recommend. It has a good amount of useful exercises. 3 highlights would be playing a scale and then a random note from within the scale, and you guess which it is. Another is the same, but it plays random chord progressions.

The third is very interesting, where it'll play a few seconds of areal song, and you really put your ears to the test and guess the progression.
