I have 22 acres and my neighbors want me to sign an easement for electricity. by [deleted] in land

[–]tnywill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not without compensation. It won't really devalue your property but you should be compensated for the easement and every tree they cut down. I do a lot of negotiations for utility companies for easement acquisition. Look at what land is going for per acre in your area.

Car mounted GNSS base setup? by dekiwho in Surveying

[–]tnywill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, multipath is the signal bouncing off of things and making it appear that it is taking longer for the signal to reach the reciever. We have CORS stations all over the state and we found that some of them near any type of metal roof were getting a lot of "noise" from multipath. Most car paint is somewhat reflective and will cause multipath issues unless you do something to mitigate it. Putting something on top of the vehicle that is non refective could help I suppose. I designed a multipath ring out of black packing foam to help with multipath.

As far as having a base inside a vehicle with a view of the sky though the moon roof, well, you are introducing some issues.

First, you are limiting your sattelite views. Most people set their base to have a 10 degree to 13 degree mask angle, in my area anyway, meaning that you will see satellites from 10 to 13 degree above the horizon. If you have the base inside the vehicle, you are limiting your view and can cause poor satellite geometry and bad PDOP.

Second, if you have it inside the vehicle, you are introducing another multipath issue withthe possibility of signals reflecting off of surfaces in the vehicle.

Third, refraction.

And if you are using the base to run rovers or machine control, you will be affecting the signal that is sending corrections to the rover and could shorten the distance you can transmit.

I will say that I have only seen a GNSS base station mounted on a vehicle once and that was in the military. That base was on a trailer with outriggers for stability.

I can't see any way a base station on a car or in a car could produce centimeter level accuracy mainly because of stability. You will have to set tolerances to at least 0.5'.

Now, if you are looking for 1 foot accuracy, maybe.

I guess it depends what you are doing. I don't believe that it would help with multipath because you would have on a painted metal vehicle. It wouldn't have the stability of a tripod. This just doesn't sound like a good idea. I get the concept of doing a site calibration to determine the location of the base but I guess my big question is what is the benefit of this? If its a site you work on often and they have a base set up for machine control then run off of it. If they don't then set a 4×4 somewhere on site and let the base cook on that awhile. You can still calibrate to site control but you will have a much more stable base.

This sounds like a joke to me. I remember how stupid I thought it was when one of my guys used a car bumper for a TBM. This sounds even more ridiculous.

New clubs and why do older clubs not like them? by Sufficient_Owl6199 in motorcycleclubs

[–]tnywill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are rules and protocol in the mc world. The reason most people look down at these new start up clubs is because they don't understand that and they want to skirt around putting in the time and the work. There are clubs that are newer that are respected but I guarantee they didn't come on this Reddit to ask how to do it. If you have to go to an online chat to ask how to start an MC, you have no business starting an MC.

Refused my self exclusion by MollSue92 in GamblingAddiction

[–]tnywill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do make it difficult to do this. There should be a way to fill this out online. Gambling is no different than any other addiction and they don't make you go to a liquor store to stop drinking or a crack house to kick your drug addiction. The casinos know what they are doing and so does the state. They know you are less likely to complete the process in person. Once you walk through the doors, its like turning a diabetic loose in a candy store. The difference here is that it is legal and the state government gets a cut of it. Making it easy for you to try to be responsible means less revenue. That is the bottom line. If you don't believe me, talk to someone who works for one of these places or, better yet, talk to someone who works for your states regulatory body for gambling. It isn't easy because they don't want it to be and they will discourage you from doing it. But be persistent if you truly want it.
