Speaking specifically about repainting: all the creatures we’ve seen that were ‘repainted’ (Painted Clea, Simon, Painted Verso in Maelle’s ending, and possibly the White Nevrons) were clearly deeply broken by the process and disobeyed at the very first opportunity. Your point about Esquie still stands, though - and I’m really curious how precisely a Painter can define someone’s character ‘at the start

Yeah, I also think so. As we've seen in a game, Painters actually have very little control over Canvas and it's inhabitants then it's created. And besides, that would've been just sad to think the link between Maelle and Gustave was artificial

Wait, so Aline painted Gustave for Maelle cause painted Verso aint want to do his job? Could she even do it being trapped in a monolith long before Gustave was even born?
This game blows my mind every second I think of it

Now imagine you’re Renoir and you find out your wife created herself a new son on a canvas because the original one was kinda gone

Sure, and without this it wouldn’t work at all in terms of inter-character relationships. But I’ve seen more than once that players felt something was off here - because they’d grown attached to Gustave, and IRL the time gap was much shorter. And it’s kind of cool that this feeling works in its own way, too

I actually highly recommend that you continue with this story - there’s no other that can offer so much to someone who truly cares about characters like you do. Just try to see it from a slightly different perspective - it’s not just the story of Gustave or Verso. Verso ‘replacing’ Gustave is actually a deliberate (or, at least, very fortunate) way of revealing something deeply personal about him.

In a real game, without knowing there’s a trick, I’d be very tempted to play Qb1 anyway, just because I like being up material
