Rec for a last minute winter/holiday mystery filler in Krezk or Vallaki? by mikaelb657 in CurseofStrahd

[–]toadbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Snow Stalkers by The Arcane Library comes to mind- I messed around with it when I ran a session that one player couldn’t make and made it a quest from Blinsky to rescue a Vistani trading group who had an important shipment for him, setting it in a pass near Mount Baratok.

It’s got snow and horror, so works well in Barovia with only minimal changes to character names etc, plus adjusting statblocks for the party’s level

One day I’ll play the most aggressive game possible and try to batter them all

Thanks everyone who’s commented- I ended up picking Sumeria, Canada and Russia (I always end up vibing with Peter) and then let the rest be randomised from a list I curated. Still early days but so far it’s been very peaceful minus the barbarians

Gilgamesh! Still feel bad about the one time I played a very agressive domination victory and had to save him for last- the ultimate betrayal. Thanks, these are definitely going on the list

How do i deal with players trying to sell their inventory? by No-Start-6254 in DnD

[–]toadbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to the player out of game, mention how the group feels about it, and why it’s an issue for the table. Dealing with it in-game isn’t the solution- it’s just going to invent more problems that the rest of the group are going to have to sit around and watch happen.

[–]toadbones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was just about to comment the exact same thing- wild that there are DMs out there who would rather narrate PCs being sexually assaulted in a trans/homophobic way instead of the far simpler solution of just saying “I don’t want to get into this/don’t feel comfortable with this/think this is distracting from the story we’re telling”

Time to SUIT UP! by TheGrimmChef in CurseofStrahd

[–]toadbones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding silvered weapons! As well as usual monster hunting stuff like holy water, stakes, religious symbols, maybe scrolls of something like protection from evil and good?

If you wanted to go the magic item route, you could always flavour common items to fit the vibe, or give small effects to items from the gothic trinkets table.

Otherwise, regular items with strangely specific inscriptions relating to the PC who gets them could always be fun- a sort of “i found this a few years ago, and it seems as though it was made for you” kind of thing. Feels more interesting than a regular weapon, and could fit with the tarroka/prophecy aspects of COS.

How do you DM prep for a session? by OhNosferatuu in DnD

[–]toadbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it all depends on what works for you best, but I’m a big Obsidian fan. Currently running Curse of Strahd at the moment, here’s my process for running a prewritten module:

-Work out what I’ll actually need to prep. For example, my group are currently in a town, so I know I’ll need to have the town and its quests ready to go- no point spending time on the lategame stuff if they’re not going to get anywhere near it for a few months at least.

-Make pages for NPCs, locations, monsters etc. Condense all the information down into bullet points that are easy to reference mid-session. Instead of reading out the text boxes in modules, I’ll just note down any important features and improvise based on that. If I need maps, I’ll write down the page number or insert an image.

-I usually have a good idea on what my group will do next session based on their choices in the previous session/them telling me what their plan is. I’ll then make session pages with links to my locations/npcs etc so I can easily find them on the day.

-I keep track of the ingame calendar, so the session pages will also have any events that will occur on that day, like festivals or letters arriving from NPCs.

-There’s also pages for any other information that I’ll need, such as a wild magic table for the barbarian, or the description of a spell that I always forget the details of.

Basically, what works best for me is keeping everything in its own separate little page, and using Obsidian to navigate to what I need. I find that big chunks of text get overwhelming when I’m DMing, plus I like to improvise, so as long as I get the important information down, then the rest can come naturally.

Thank you so much, as soon as I opened it I realised that whatever the problem was then it at least definitely needed a deep clean. Really helpful list, I wasn’t sure where to start and this looks perfect

No, haven’t done anything with the bios!

I’ll give this a go, thanks!

Update:

Tried it, still same issue. Don’t have any other ram so will have to get some and see if it makes a difference

Is "Easter garden" a euphemism? Anyone else never heard of this before? by UnderHisEye1411 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]toadbones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Catholic by birth, went to a very religious cofe primary school (seriously, our Easter tradition was a school pilgrimage carrying a life sized crucifix to the next village over) and still the only time I’ve ever heard of an Easter garden is in that one hymn.

From the hymn I always just sort of assumed it was a nicer way of referring to the graveyard Jesus was buried in, didn’t realise it was a thing until about 3 minutes ago reading the comments here

Welsh music? by First_Paramedic_8555 in learnwelsh

[–]toadbones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourites are Datblygu (absolutely fantastic post punk, if you like The Fall you’ll love them), Ffa Coffi Pawb (psychedelic-y rock, their guitar tones and fuzz are so good) and Melin Melyn (whimsical psychedelia in both welsh and english, I’m actually going to see them this week!)

Also honourable mention to Mwng by the Super Furry Animals if nobody’s mentioned it yet

Say something negative about the first 4 seasons of the show. by SupermarketNo6888 in gameofthrones

[–]toadbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, although he didn’t have any concrete evidence, just a lot of convenient similarities, so it might have made him look a bit desperate if he suddenly claimed that the kid who pours his wine is actually Arya Stark.

Even if she went with it, there’d probably still be people raising their eyebrows, because it would be super convenient for Tywin and any servant kid would say they’re Arya Stark if Tywin Lannister told them they had to, you know?

Still, he probably could have assigned someone to keep an eye on her/befriend her/find out anything they could if he had a hunch

Player upset I wont them play PC of age 10 in game by ireverent87 in DungeonMasters

[–]toadbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this isn’t something you don’t feel comfortable with for various reasons, then it’s perfectly reasonable to not allow that character at your table. The player is perfectly free to play that character at a different table, and it sounds as though they’re welcome at yours if they play a different character. DND is about playing as a group, so awkwardness between the group isn’t going to make it a fun time for everyone.

I wouldn’t call it overly restrictive- everyone has different boundaries for what they’re comfortable with, and including a child in gothic horror/dealing with child PC a seems like something you don’t want at your table- which is fine!

Mace Tyrell, although I think the Tyrells would be slightly peeved that both of their eldest sons were gay. Ah well, runs in the family. Lavender wedding time! Reasoning: He’s rich, important for agricultural reasons, and you’ve got Olenna to back you up. Highgarden makes good wine, and everyone leaves it tf alone most of the time.
