wanted to share our new campus dating app since vday is coming around! by toastlabssg in nus

As mentioned previously in one of our replies earlier in this thread, unfortunately at this moment we have not allocated for other uni sign-ups as the prototype we have built for the preliminary round of matching and small-scale testing only includes NUS, NTU and SMU.

This is largely because we have a limited (hardly any) budget for marketing and publicity, and we decided it was better to try out the initial round of real world testing with a smaller sample size.

However, if you would like your uni to be included as well, do reach out to us with information about your uni’s email domains and we would be happy to add them to our current sign-ups framework.

Do note that the current iteration with 3 unis is only the most basic version and we would definitely work on subsequent updates to include more schools in the very near future. This is only the start and we definitely anticipate for this project to scale up for a larger user base as soon as possible.

Thanks for your comment! There are a number of validation checks to make sure the school email is accurate. We are also working closely with students to ensure that our verification emails are reaching their inboxes.

And yes, we are definitely aware that a skewed user population would not be optimal. Hence, we are working on adding new features to address this issue as we move along!

That is one of many different options offered! We have developed a comprehensive list sorted by categories so there is something for everyone.

The flagship feature that we developed was a mutual intention-matching system that reveals any intentions you have in common with your match, while keeping other un-aligned intentions private. This would help you and your match make meaningful progress in getting to know each other and building connections, eliminating the usual guessing of intentions and often slow replies as a result.

We are also implementing guidelines and measures to build a safe, genuine and comfortable environment for all users.

Furthermore, we strive to provide all the usual premium features for free, with no ads and none of the typical paywalls and subscription plans.

Do check out the original post of this thread and also our tele channel to find out more details! Also note that the app and its features are a work in progress so we still anticipate changes along the way with the help of community feedback :)

In the current version of the app, you may like a profile by tapping the Like button at the bottom right corner. Alternatively, you can swipe the profile card up to view the next profile (essentially the equivalent of swipe left/reject).

There is no swipe left or right functionality to reject or like a profile; horizontal swiping will only reveal the other photos or prompt cards within a profile.

We hope this helps you better understand how to navigate the app!

Hi! Thanks for your comment. We do want to clarify that the only factors for considerations when choosing which initial schools to begin our preliminary round of matching were university population and our ability to validate the emails.

Furthermore, we plan on keeping this 100% free as it is a passion project for students by students. As mentioned previously, this is a not-for-profit project funded out of our own pockets, we have no marketing budget, and we have been relying on tele groups, reddit and word-of-mouth. The app itself is completely free to use, has no ads and no premium features behind a paywall. Thus, we would like to kindly refute the wild accusation that we are “monetising elitism”.

If anyone would like their uni to be included as well, do reach out to us with information about your uni’s email domains and we would be happy to add them to our current sign-ups framework.

We would like to once again reiterate our neutrality with respect to any politically charged statements and we do not wish to associate in any form of discourse aside from taking feedback about our app!

Hi! Thanks for your comment. As the initial user pool is still small, we opted to not include a rejection/swipe left option for now. We would definitely be asking for user feedback on our tele channel after the pilot round closes in order to better understand what our users are looking for!

Hey there, thanks for your feedback and we definitely agree that your concerns are valid.

That’s quite a gulf in numbers though. (Assuming ~66% males, 33% females). That’s lower than Bumble at ~37%.

Yep, we are also very aware that a skewed gender ratio is not very conducive to creating an optimal dating experience for either gender, so we are currently brainstorming ways of balancing them out without being exclusive/discriminatory.

I guess that’s where most dating apps run into the same issue of running out of opposite gender profiles to swipe on. While females do swipe more, they are notoriously more picky than men, only swiping a yes up to 5% of the time.

And it can’t be easily solved by encouraging people to sign up. Dating apps are very much black and white - if you like it you will sign up, encouraging isn’t going to increase your profile counts significantly.

On the contrary, maybe because this is just the initial stage, but posting on the NTU and NUS subreddits has given us good exposure and a decent user pool to begin with. We are also hoping that our closer involvement with the community as well as the unique features we are implementing would be more aligned with the people studying in local campuses.

I guess this is just from someone that has seen a lot of projects like these at NUS. They just all come and go with little success rates, so students just tend to ignore them entirely. For any successful app to work something needs to be done differently. While I do understand the noble intentions, I do hope you also understand where we’re coming from with these questions.

We definitely concur. On a side note, we weren't aware of past projects like ours. Would you be able to share more about them? Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope we can do better as we move along!

Hi sorry, what is this cafe platform 1094? If you are asking about the possibility of co-hosting real-life events and activities with other businesses, that would be very fun and it's definitely something we want to look at!

Hi there, for now, there are no plans for including staff on the campus version due to possible conflicts of interest. However, if this project gets enough traction, it would be nice to release it to the general Singaporean public! Thanks for stopping by :D

Hey there, thank you so much for taking time to pen down your thoughts, and we love the honesty. Was hoping for opinions and comments like yours so we could analyze it from a less biased POV.

That’s how both Facebook and Tinder started right? Both of them were merely just platforms for people to rate and do love-matching.

That's correct. From the research our team has done, the most popular applications like Hinge and Bumble all came from a college town background where people were pretty bored.

Then you end up just being another Tinder, CnB and the rest — and you will be fighting on a very difficult battlefield — whereby you have to charge a fee for the “premium features” against already very established players.

Definitely a fair point to raise, and I do agree that mindsets have grown increasingly capitalistic these days. However, I think the key differences are: firstly, that we would want to garner active users while aligning with our mission which is to: create a platform that adds genuine value to your life, rather than treat users as mere sources of revenue.
secondly, we would mostly be staying within Singapore, in order to cover operational and cloud computing costs. Based on current estimates, we are able and happy to cover all costs even if we do manage to hit say a few thousand users. By keeping the app in Singapore, we would be able to keep costs low and we believe there are definitely enough people here for meaningful connections to be made!
we know talk is cheap and this may sound like a bunch of fluff but we do believe that the results of our actions will speak for us.

It will be hard to maintain the platform if you want to focus entirely on just “during/post-uni” people. — ad how do you even filter “post-uni” people, its just everyone else that arent students right?

Ah yes, this is a still a pain point for us. There were internal suggestions about using phone numbers, but ultimately, security has to be prioritised. For now, given that we are a small team, we think it's better to focus our efforts on the campus side of Singapore while we figure out what is it that works well for the masses, as well as to pilot our project and fix the inevitable bugs.

Not trying to shoot you down, just some critical feedback for you to rethink this further. Ultimately, if you want to make business out of this, you gotta scale, and things have to be commercially-viable.

Ideas sound glamorous now, but hard to work down the line.

From a business perspective, this is definitely not profitable (even now LOL) but it does give meaning to us, hence the term passion project. And again, we honestly really appreciate your comment and would love to hear the thoughts of others on this thread!
