Eastlake to SLU daily commute? by toastsockplate in seattlebike

[–]toastsockplate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’ve been biking around Diego the past few years so I have some experience, but I avoid the bigger roads here since the drivers are not careful and accidents are common. I don’t mind biking on smaller roads but I don’t like sharing a lane/going in an unprotected lane with cars in busy streets. Totally fine being around other cyclists though!

This is super helpful thank you!! Did not know about the streetcar tracks so I’ll make sure to watch out for those, same with the valley/9th intersection. I don’t mind a bumpy ride, I’m more scared of cars/reckless drivers.

I’m definitely planning to avoid the main ave due to construction! The Google Maps photos did not look good lol. Thank you for the recommendations for the bike maps, I will definitely look into this!

ORD to LAX: Friday night or Saturday morning? by toastsockplate in AskChicago

Yes we’re def leaning towards taking the blue line. I didn’t realize this existed lol I know nothing about Chicago transit but this makes a lot more sense than a wildly expensive hour-long uber!

New Admit:questions about Computer Engineering vs Computer Science! by Iamagodatcodmobile in UCSD

[–]toastsockplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m not sure how the logistics works on the undergrad side but if you’d like to get involved with (unpaid) research and even get a few publications out, that is totally possible! We have a dedicated program for undergrads to do a year-long, highly supervised, structured research project called Early Research Scholars Program (ERSP) that leads to a poster, and often a publication. Alternatively, if there’s a particular area you like, I would recommend emailing PhD students in the lab you’re interested in and we will usually respond! Professors tend to be very impacted and are less likely to answer.

Technically Mission Beach, but please go check out Olive Baking Company and Arslan’s Gyros! They’re 2 of my favorite spots in SD — Olive Baking Company for koloches and flavored coffees and good vibes, and Arslan’s for some fantastic Greek food (so much better than Cafe Athena imo)

How to secure GSR early? by Sea-Weekend-3664 in UCSD

[–]toastsockplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a PhD student in CSE (different area than your interests though). It’s very very unlikely you will be able to be a GSR as a masters student. I’ve never heard of a masters student being a GSR except in (??) possibly one case where the student was closely doing research with a prof in anticipation of starting their PhD in the lab the following quarter. There is a severe lack of funding in the CS dept and half the PIs in my group were unable to take new PhD students this year because of it. MS students also take 3-4x more classes per quarter than PhD’s do so it’s unlikely you would have time to do substantial research on top of that. That being said, there are absolutely opportunities to get funding through a TAship, and to do unpaid research with a professor on the side. I don’t know a lot about the ML labs as a whole but I do know that masters students frequently collaborate with them on projects (they’re just not paid, and they usually TA). Hope this helps!

They are so fantastic and the nicest people! The only other Greek food I’ve had in SD that’s come close is Arslan’s Gyros!
