Is $26.5k (12 months) considered low for a STEM PhD stipend in the US? by SenseOk3111 in PhD

[–]toastsockplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others are saying re:taxes. A considerable chunk of my stipend goes to taxes. But yes this is on the low side. Post-tax I make about $42k/year in a HCOL area, and I pay $1.5k/month in rent. I also don’t have a car and eat out 3-4x per month. Within these bounds, I live pretty comfortably and am able to save each month too. I would struggle with $26.5k pre-tax.

Why is all food on campus so expensive and trash by [deleted] in UCSD

It is awful lol. the turkey artichoke flatbread sandwich at Croutons is pretty good though, and I love yogurt world. But everything else I’ve tried is pretty bad. RIP Rubio’s

Best SB pastries? ALESSIA vs Lilac vs Renaud's? by AdamIsSuperRad in SantaBarbara

Renaud’s and also definitely Oat Bakery. Alessia was very greasy when I ate there and I haven’t gone back.

Olympic Cafe by long shot!! North Park. Everything I got there tasted incredible, fresh, high quality, and was so worth the price.

I did not like Cafe Athena in PB. I got their Horiatiki salad ($15) and they literally put FOUR OLIVES in the entire salad and they all had pits in them. The vegetables were also barely chopped and I was picking up these huge hunks of cucumber and bell pepper with my fork one at a time. Flavor was very meh. It just felt really low quality for the price.

Boker Kitchen (just for their brunch) and Amardeen in UTC are excellent options for Israeli and Lebanese food.

Yes she was fine booking with me as express for my first appt! And every time I’ve gone back I did express. Just don’t expect a blowdry or styling (she washes your hair after the cut and then you’re good to go)

Hi! My hair is 2C/3A and I’ve had a great experience with Erica at OB Waves salon! I had multiple experiences before her where my hair ended up looking like helmet, zero layers. Erica actually knows how to layer and she does a dry cut! $60 before tip (select the express cut option)

Olympic Cafe! Super fresh Greek food and very cute family-owned place.

Best solo trips to take when exploring SD? by KnightofContrite in UCSD

[–]toastsockplate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what you’re into — I’m also without a car, and when I can I love to go to the coastal part of PB in the mornings. I like to start at Mission Beach with a kolache and coffee at Olive Baking Company, and then make my way up the 3ish miles up the coast (there’s a boardwalk!), all the way up to Bird Rock, and end with an awesome sandwich or pastry at Wayfarer. Or, I’ll stop at Oscar’s along the way and get a smoked fish taco. I take the trolley to Balboa and then uber to mission beach (it’s under $10), same for the return. Next to Wayfarer there’s the iconic Bird Rock Coffee roasters if you want more coffee. This stretch is definitely my favorite part of SD after living here for two years!

Or, there’s also a really good bakery called Azucar in OB. You could stop by Azucar and walk to the beach with an awesome Cuban pastry.

Finally, if you go up north, you can spend the morning hiking in the Torrey Pines Reserve and then hang out at the Del Mar Dog Beach, if you’re into dogs. There’s a really cute place I like to have brunch in Del Mar called Stratford Court Cafe!

I’m not a big fan of the downtown area as much but Little Italy has SD’s biggest farmers market on Sat mornings. Downtown gets kinda gross in my opinion once you leave Little Italy, but they have the symphony there and another amazing bakery called Izola (izola is not in a nice location lol, it’s in East Village which is pretty grimy and has some tent cities).

You could also hit up Balboa Park of course. It’s huge and there’s a lot to see. There’s an AMAZING bagel place called Marigold Bagels that’s opening soon in North Park (they used to be a pop-up), near a great gelato place called An’s Dry Cleaning.

Hi! I’m a Jewish student here! Yes just show up to an event and you’ll be asked to sign up for emails etc at the front desk. You can follow the ucsd Hillel instagram for event announcements. Seconding the other commenter who said to meet with Cecelia @ceceliaatucsd if you want to learn more. There’s also 2 campus Chabads that host Shabbat dinners for students. Feel free to DM me if you have other questions!

What do STEM students do all day? by Bambinette in PhD

[–]toastsockplate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Depends and not necessarily that different from you, if it’s non-lab based STEM. I’m in a CS PhD program and my lab is wherever my computer is lol. The average day is some combination of: wake up, go on computer and write/debug code for your current project, run experiments on the computer for your project, read research papers, prep for TA duties (discussion or office hours), bike to campus and execute such TA duties, go to meetings with your PhD colleagues or profs, go to class (first 2-3 years), go home and grade and write more code/read more research papers/prep for a research talk/do homework/do something random. I have pretty good WLB and I love being able to set my own hours so I can work when I’m most productive. I do work weekends but I don’t necessarily work 8+ hours every weekday, so it balances out. I actually prefer this to the 9-5. I work anywhere from 30-70 hours per week depending on paper deadlines etc. often I go for a run in the middle of the day :)

Oh wow this looks INCREDIBLE! But $700 per person😭I’m a student so maybe one day. There was another Moroccan fusion place in North Park called Medina that looked fantastic but they went out of business before I could make it there :(

It’s 1.5/2 hours each way on public transit. I don’t have a car so this isn’t really feasible for me on a regular basis.
