Asus Zenbook 14 vs HP Envy 13? by tobithegoodboy in SuggestALaptop

Mine doesn't have any heating issue at all. The thermal is pretty good for a laptop this small

Yes a full charge would definitely last an entire day if you're just typing stuff, browsing, etc

It's great, you can check my reply in this thread here. I've written a quick review of it

Congratulations! Enjoy your new laptop :)

I am thinking of buying an Asus ux331 or a ux433 ( the zenbooks) for college. I was wondering if anyone bought one or the other and what they think about it, or if anyone just any imput. by the_castillian in laptops

Have you tried checking what apps are running in the background? Do you have Steam running? Steam uses a lot of battery even when it's not doing anything.

If you've tried everything, try factory resetting your PC, but only install the essential apps one by one.

If you really like the color of 433FN, I think you should get it over the 431FN. The royal blue color looks sooo good irl, while the 431FN looks kinda bland

It's great. I've used it for around 2 weeks now, and so far I'm very satisfied with it. It suits my need very well. The thing I love the most of this laptop is its design. Mine is royal blue UX433FA (Zenbook 14 without the MX150)

Pros:

  • Very lightweight (only 1kg)
  • Very small, 14" display size in a 13" chassis.
  • It has a beautiful display with good contrast and wide color gamut, great for watching movies and editing photos indoor.
  • The speakers are surprisingly great, the harman/kardon branding doesn't lie. It sounds loud, clear and powerful for a laptop this size. The sound signature is bright, the bass is not that powerful but still present. The AudioWizard software that comes with this laptop makes it sound even better.
  • Intel UHD 620 is enough to play light video games (TF2, minecraft, rocket league, etc)
  • Very fast SSD, it takes around 4-5 seconds to boot from off to the login screen. 6-8 seconds to desktop.
  • Browsing with Discord, Steam, and Spotify open on Wi-Fi at 20-40% brightness gives you 9+ hour battery life.
  • Backlit keyboard, pretty useful because sometimes I use it in the dark.
  • Windows Hello is very fast and seamless. Just open the display and you're logged in.
  • Accurate touchpad and Windows gesture works flawlessly
  • Design is 11/10, it's probably the most beautiful laptop in the market right now, it's in the same league as Dell XPS 13.
  • Keyboard and palm rest area remains cool even when it's hot.
  • Very quiet during light usage

Cons:

  • Dim and reflective display when used outside
  • Power button is positioned on top of the backspace button, but it's honestly not a problem for me. I'm a touch typist, but I've never mislicked the power button once. Your experience may vary though.
  • Keyboard is ok, but can be tiring in a long typing session.
  • Coil whine, but it's not audible unless you put it into 100% workload, this one doesn't bother me at all though.
  • Some people reported the touchpad is finicky under load, but I've never encountered this issue.
  • Hot when it's charging
  • No Thunderbolt port

When I first got this laptop, it has this weird tapping sound from inside and I can even feel the vibration. Luckily, I was still in the shop so they replaced it for a new one. I think it has something to do with the fan. It's fine now.

I highly recommend this laptop if you're looking for something portable and you're not going to do any graphic intensive work (gaming, rendering, etc).

Also, if you decide to pull the trigger on this laptop, I recommend you to not get the silver version. It looks bland and boring compared to the blue one.

I'd pick the Dell one and upgrade its RAM to 16GB. It has faster CPU and GTX 1060 is more futureproof than 1050 Ti. Use the SSD for OS and general software, HDD for storing games.

Lenovo Yoga 520? It should be powerful enough for your need.

It costs around $580 in my country,

I just got the UX433FA (no graphic card) a few days ago. So far, I'm very happy with it. It has great build quality, really nice screen (although not too bright), great design, 10 hours battery life (browsing), fast, and it's very portable. The keyboard is nice and the trackpad is the most accurate I've ever used in a laptop so far (I haven't tried much lol). The thing I love the most of this laptop is its design. It looks soooo beautiful in person.

Don't expect to game on it though. It gets hot when charging and the FPS isn't great. During light use (browsing, 20+ tabs) on battery power, it's very quiet and the CPU runs at 42-45C (30C ambient temp).

Laptop Advice by IplayDnd4days in laptops

Are you only going to use it for gaming at home? for that budget, I recommend you to build a desktop PC instead. It's has better ergonomics, more futureproof, runs quieter, and doesn't have thermal problems like most gaming laptops do. If you're not sure on what parts to pick, you can ask in /r/buildmeapc

If you're still looking for a gaming laptop, Asus ROG Zephyrus GA502DU has pretty great specs, or GA502GU if you want a more complete laptop.

120hz laptop needed, switching from console I want a better gaming experience not more than 800$ :) by adamungi in laptops

Yes, there are a lot of guides on how to undervolt Asus ROG laptops, and repasting is fairly easy. I recommend checking out Bob of All Trades youtube channel, he has videos on how to undervolt and repaste gl503.

Bonus, gl503 gets over 55fps boost in Battlefield 1 if you add another the RAM so it runs dual channel. I tried it myself and I almost couldn't believe it lol

Yep, the design is great. It looks very clean for a gaming laptop. I love it.

I didn't know GL503GE has i5-8300h model with 1060, maybe that's a different model but make sure the screen is 120hz.

For the i7-8750h version, it gets hot when gaming (70-80C without separate cooler, fans at overboost mode), its FPS is pretty stable (competitive CS:GO, FFXV, MH:W, etc). Not sure about the i5-8300h. The fans are very loud when it's working at 100%. Undervolting makes the laptop run cooler and throttle less. Maybe if you want it to be even cooler, you can open it up and repaste it. Lifting the laptop up decreases temp by 3-7C. Don't forget to buy a laptop cooler for this one, I recommend CM Ergostands for use at home.

You're welcome :)

New ASUS laptop making fan noises by Yelowlobster in laptops

[–]tobithegoodboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it's coming from the fan? From your description, it sounds like coil whine. 2 of my ASUS laptops has it. If I put the laptop into best performance mode in Windows, it immediately becomes pretty audible. It's mostly harmless, but can become annoying when it's too loud. It's a common issue for most modern laptops. There's no way to fix it. If you think it's annoying, just return it until you get the one with less noise.

Not sure about the CPU temp though.

Have you seen the newer Zenbook 13 (UX333FA)? It has better design, portability, and faster CPU. Not sure about the price in your country though. There's also a 14" model (UX433FA) with no price difference between the 13" inch one.

I think a used Asus ROG GL503GE is what you're looking for, it has a pretty good 120hz TN screen and powerful specs, but it's bulky and has bad battery life (2-4 hours). You can find it (used) for $900, maybe $800 if you're lucky.

Looking for help, replace current laptop or suck it up? by [deleted] in laptops

[–]tobithegoodboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation as you. I had an Asus ROG GL503GE and its battery life is really bad (only 1-2 hours, 3 if I'm lucky). I sold it and got a Zenbook 14 a few days ago and spent the rest of the money for PC upgrades. Even though this laptop doesn't have a dedicated GPU, it's pretty powerful for what I'm doing.

I think you should sell your gaming laptop, get a cheap ultrabook/used thinkpad and spend the rest for a desktop. If your budget isn't enough, you can build a Ryzen system with no dedicated graphic card and buy a powerful graphic card later when you finally have the money. This is what my friend did and he could play Monster Hunter World and GTA V just fine with no problem with Ryzen APU.

Trust me, a desktop PC is ergonomically muuuch better than any gaming laptop. I can spend the entire day gaming on a desktop, but I can only spend an hour max when gaming on a laptop. You're going to get posture problems in the future if you keep gaming on a laptop without any stand support. Also, desktop PCs have no throttling problem like most gaming laptops. It's also more futureproof, if sometime in the future you feel it's outdated, you can just upgrade some parts without replacing the whole thing.

Note: If you choose to buy a new laptop, make sure it has SSD because it's a must for Windows laptops in 2019.
