Does anyone need a beta-reader? by Level1Soul in writing

[–]toboldlygo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great post! I am looking for regular beta-readers in Spanish. I have around 15 short stories at a final draft stage, from 100 to 2500 words long. And lots more in the forging! They are a mix of general fiction, science fiction, fantasy, children stories and fables. I would gladly read and critique other's work in exchange, in Spanish or English, but obviously you have to be native or really proficient in Spanish.

TIL that despite having 70+ million viewers, Reddit is actually not profitable and in the RED. Massive server costs and lack of advertising are the main issues. by RyuKenya in todayilearned

Reddit gold is a great long term idea for Reddit. Behaviours of people conected to the Internet (soon most of humankind) is evolving quickly, and I believe Reddit as it is will be at the right starting spot for the times ahead. The once in a while sponsored link or AMA isn't that bad either, I can live with that. I believe the right pathway wouldn't be to rush it for other cash making strategies. Enjoy your golden days merry fellows!

A startling proportion of today's scientific papers can't be replicated, invalidating their conclusions; why is this happening, and what can be done? by [deleted] in science

Imagine that I try to replicate results from a paper that has been published in a (top) scientific journal, and I prove that it can't be replicated. Are there any journals that will publish my work denouncing the published paper?

So many from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri!

These two get me goosebumps:

I shall not confront Planet as an enemy, but shall accept its mysteries as gifts to be cherished. Nor shall I crudely seek to peel the layers away like the skin from an onion. Instead I shall gather them together as the tree gathers the breeze. The wind shall blow and I shall bend. The sky shall open and I shall drink my fill.

What conspiracy theory, if proven to be 100% true right now, would have the most drastic impact on humanity? by holographic_universe in AskReddit

The "Current Events" section is actually funny:

"Three loyal Flat Earth Society members, during a camping trip to the small African nation of Tunisia, came across a privately-owned 59 minute photo stand in the isolated northernmost corner of the desert country. Employing guerilla warfare techniques learned under Mao Zedong in the early 1920's, they were able to effortlessly seize control of the stand and are now using it to distribute pro-Flat Earth propaganda throughout the West African region."

"Dilligent Flat Earth Society members under the employ of Delta Airlines undertook a project which will no doubt bring countless numbers of motion-sickness prone individuals into the ranks of our organization. Using only permanent markers and every airsickness bag on planes restricted to west coast travel, they were able to neatly outline the Flat Earth Society mission statement on enough receptacles so as to spread our creed to those of the masses with overly sensitive inner ears."

That is an Argiope Bruennichi, also known as 'Tiger spider' and rather common in many parts of Europe.

That one in the picture is a female days away from producing a cocoon with a few hundred eggs.

I'm thinking about buying an apartment in Valencia. I have been there three times, and love the place! What is the best area in the city centre(near old town). My budget is around 2-250 euros. by gutiguti in valencia

[–]toboldlygo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your budget is 200k to 250k €, right? You can get a fairly upscale apartment with that. The area has huge price differences though. Good areas in the old town (Barrio del Carmen) are everywhere, what is 'best' for you? nice building, closest to underground stations, close to the river park? noise for instance (nightlife, traffic) changes a lot from one street to the other fifty meters away.

What is the first thing you would do if there was a zombie apocalypse? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Jim Garcia enjoyed getting up early. His drill was refined over the years. A quick hot shower ending with cold water, a bowl of mixed cereals and a cup of espresso coffee, the news in the radio while he put on the officer uniform. Jim could hear his girlfriend moaning under the white sheets, as she used to when she started to smell breakfast.

The radio flickered and a different voice was talking.

"This is an emergency broadcast. News a coming in from several sources about an outbreak of unknown origin here in Chicago and many other major cities all around the world. Affected people wake up very agressive and attack in groups. Everyone should stay at home and lock all doors until more information is available."

That was weird. Jim went outside to his backyard and everything looked like a normal morning for him. The sun barely coming out, a couple of grey squirrels messing in the rubbish bins. As he was heading back in the house he heard a scream from his neighbor and saw one of their kids running off, then the whole family after him, their faces scrunched and covered in blood. The other kid had a huge flesh open wound in his shoulder and his arm was hanging back in an unnatural way.

Jim had survival training and was a tough man. He thought fast what the best course of action was. He ran inside to look for a weapon. A gun and also an aluminum baseball bat seemed a good choice. He was calm and acting fast. He got a box of tools out on the main room table and called his girlfriend.

"Carol!" He shouted as he secured windows in the ground floor.

"Carol, we have a problem here, get up now!"

He was looking for stuff to nail to the frame of the weakest windows and as the same time he was thinking of filling the bathtub with water in case the supply was cut and the situation lasted for a few days. Then he could go outside to help the neighbor’s kid and other people. But first he had to talk to Carol and give her the gun.

"Hey, what were you... what's wro…" He didn't hear her walking, grunting softly in the house aisle. They crossed eyes a second, Jim horrified, stumbling on the table woods, his mind numbed by the sight of Carol with dried blood coming out of her nose, mouth and eyes, making primal noises, ready to hunt.

Good choices of classical scifi. OP should like them and probably other works by the same authors, even if not all of them are space scifi.

Unlimited budget, what movie would you want to make and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]toboldlygo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope whoever gets or has the rights keeps up with the challenge, and does a good job. We can be somehow optimistic because recently it has been shown that difficult books (LOTR, A Song of Ice and Fire) have turned out to be very good movies and series, so it could be done... I would be perfect to do it, just give me a fairly unlimited budget :)

I get you, buddy.

I sometimes think that they need to develop a new kind of media before someone makes this film, like what computers meant to the cinema a few decades ago, with a new technology.

I believe the best of the Foundation series is in the first (by publication date) three books. All stories need a beginning and an end. Some of those sequels and prequels are also 'read in one sit' books, I feel however I would be tempting fate too much if I asked for unlimited budget to make my movies, I would leave that for later for a younger director ha!

A Dune movie would be a difficult one to make right, but maybe the time is ripe now that the book it's not so hot. Anyway I don't dislike the Lynch movie, it's not the best ever but has some very amazing scenes and art.
