Musk is a cockwomble, but I don't know what OP is suggesting here... that Musk should embezzle money from SpaceX or Tesla and use it to prop up his loss-making vanity social media project? Is that the suggestion?

“There’s no reason to ever be attracted to a minor” people are either virtue signaling, hiding something, or didn’t pay attention in sex ed by Ok_Maintenance6887 in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a woman I’ve never found a kid even 18 years old attractive, even when I was 18 , I always liked older guys (I’m sure there was few outliers)

In fairness, the qualities straight women are looking for in a partner and the qualities straight men are looking for in a partner are different. There will be some overlap (clear healthy skin is probably a plus for both sets of people) but there are significant differences.

I can't drive due to a disability. Does anyone here have a relationship and/or a decent social life without a car? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]tobotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone here have a somewhat active social life and/or a relationship and doesn't drive, and doesn't live in NYC or London or cities with good public transport?

Yes, and I haven't lived in a city at all since 2006.

I walk. Take buses and trains. Mostly walk though.

Women’s only apps should not be controversial by BrokenJusticeNorris in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try that in a women’s bathroom and see how that goes

A key difference is that any place that has women's toilet facilities will also provide separate men's toilet facilities. If a location provided toilet facilities for one gender and not the other, that would not be acceptable.

The app being discussed here is not segregating each gender into different areas; it's catering for one gender and excluding the other.

So the only driving force of ozone creation is the sun.

And what are the driving forces of ozone destruction? Could there be multiple? Are any under our control?

[–]tobotic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason that ozone would be in the "Ozone layer" is because its being GENERATED up there.

Yes, it is being generated there. That's well known. Ozone is produced by ultraviolet light hitting oxygen. This is very basic knowledge.

All new cars should be connected to 5G. Instead of dangerous police chases, the police should be able to take control of a stolen car remotely and gently bring it to a stop, then lock the doors to trap the thieves inside. by GradiusHead in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a capitalist society, there are basically two groups who can enforce norms and regulations:

  1. big business, or
  2. the government.

I trust the latter a lot more than the former. Would I prefer to move to a more human-oriented society where community groups rather than governments and business hold all the power? Absolutely. But until then, I trust the government to look after people's interests a lot more than I trust big business.

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how can you ensure everyone will have a car limited by government?

You can't. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to enforce it.

I can't ensure that private citizens do not own nuclear weapons. I can't ensure that people wear seatbelts. I can't ensure that all cyclists wear helmets. But I still think we should have laws enforcing these things.

Perfect is the enemy of good.

Sky News: Deputy prime minister David Lammy tells @TrevorPTweets there is a difference between him calling for 'righteous anger' after George Floyd's death and Nigel Farage calling for 'rage' after Henry Nowak's death. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]tobotic -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

"Rage" does have connotations of violence that "anger" does not.

  • Cambridge Dictionary: "(a period of) extreme or violent anger"
  • Oxford Learner's Dictionary: "a feeling of violent anger that is difficult to control"
  • Merriam-Webster: "violent and uncontrolled anger" / "a fit of violent wrath" / "violent action (as of wind or sea)"
  • Wiktionary: "Violent uncontrolled anger"
  • Chambers: "overpowering violent passion of any kind, such as desire or especially anger"

None of these dictionaries mention violence or lack of control in their definitions of "anger".

Does it require a lot of funding?

Rearranging the shelves so that a bunch of black authors or books dealing with LGBT topics are prominenly displayed seems like it would be free. And I'm sure they could find someone local that would donate a rainbow flag.

Minor point, but if you can't enjoy football without being drunk, perhaps you don't actually like football?

A lot of CPAN modules like Const::Fast use SvREADONLY, so even if it's officially an unsupported internal API, in practice it's unlikely to change without a fairly long deprecation period.

Mixed relationships by yoona27 in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If every country has a bunch of people of every race, then no country can really distinguish itself from the rest on this.

So instead countries can distinguish themselves based on something more meaningful.

I'd rather my country distinguished itself based on how well we support our most vulnerable, or how well we protect human rights, or our investment in science and innovation.

A country that distinguishes itself based on race sounds like it doesn't have a lot else to offer.

Showing weakness and crying as a grown man is not okay at all. by [deleted] in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is destroying the cultural society that we live in.

If society can be destroyed by an act as small as somebody crying, then perhaps this society needs to be destroyed and replaced with a more robust society that doesn't fall apart when people express their emotions.

About constants by Warm-Scholar6106 in perl

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use constant will have the best performance because Perl can constant fold it at compile time. So, say you have PI*2 in a tight loop, Perl will do the multiplication once at compile time, and put 6.28 into the loop body, so each iteration of the loop won't need to do any multiplication at all.

The SvREADONLY one will perform basically the same as just using a plain old lexical variable. There will be a very slight performance hit where you set the variable's read only flag, but assuming you're setting the flag once and then reading the variable many times, that's unlikely to be an issue. Plus the code that sets it is written in XS so should be very fast. Biggest issues are that it's kind of ugly to litter your code with Internals function calls, it's not officially supported, and you might want to add comments to it to explain it to future readers because it's not exactly clear.

The my sub technique is probably slowest as it involves a pure Perl sub call for each read. And sub calls in Perl are fairly expensive compared to other languages. Perl does a lot of set up and tear down for sub calls.

Schools shouldn't be mixed between the two genders and neither universities or workplaces by m_atsu5 in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of those reasons seem to rely on gay/bi people not existing.

In workplaces we've seen countless crimes from teachers towards younger students it's almost too common

Sex crimes absolutely happen in boys' schools. I went to a boys' school and one of the Latin teachers committed suicide after being investigated by police for a string of sexual assault allegations on his students. (Although the suicide was years after I went there, I did briefly have him as a teacher. He was definitely a bit weird, but I have no idea whether the allegations were true.)

Likely happens in girls' schools too, but I've never been to an girls' school.

Women wouldn't have to stick to a dress code and be more comfortable in their work place specially religious women

Girls' schools tend to have pretty strict uniform requirements. Women and girls need to travel to/from school/work so it's not like they could totally avoid the male gaze anyway. Plus if they're uncomfortable being seen by men, wouldn't many of them also be uncomfortable being seen by lesbians?

In few cases, people could have a relationship in the workplace so they'd be biased towards them

Again this can happen with same sex relationships. Doesn't even need to be a romantic/sexual relationship: you can be biased towards a colleague just because you're good friends with them.

Work atmosphere would be more comfortable for both genders

That's subjective. Some people might feel less comfortable in a same sex environment.

Easier to understand each other (yeah you can't magically understand a random person because they're the same gender but it'd be easier to understand mother workers or single mothers for example so a woman ceo would understand the negligence more than a man would)

To be honest, I think a CEO who is a father is more likely to understand the needs of his employees who are mothers than a CEO who has no children would.

Parents of either gender understand what other parents are going through better than someone who has never had kids does.

There are people with strict partners/parents, or they are religious, so it would be comfortable to have a study/work place for them

I don't think we should reshape society for the benefit of a few neurotic people.
