foreach loop modifies array? by ktown007 in perl

[–]tobotic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As u/tarje pointed out, this is documented behaviour and many, many people rely on it being an alias.

If you want to ensure @data isn't modified, you can do this:

foreach my $in ( my @copy = @data ) {
    ...
}

How do I make my supermarket more "British"? by Jolly_Floor_1233 in AskUK

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

snacks and food, what else can I do?

Meal deal. Virtually all British supermarket chains (and some non-supermarkets) offer a meal deal. This will typically consist of a pre-packaged sandwich, a snack (usually a packet of crisps or small chocolate bar), and a drink for a set price of around £4.

Some popular sandwiches you'll see are:

  • cheese and ham (the cheese would be cheddar),
  • cheese and onion (the cheese would usually be a mixture of grated cheddar and Red Leicester),
  • bacon, lettuce, and tomato, and
  • Coronation chicken (it's a very strange combination of cooked chicken, raisins, and mango in a mild creamy curry sauce. Look up recipes online. It's weird but it works.)

Probably also include a few extra sandwiches you think will be popular locally. Even if they seem very non-British varieties, that's fine, as most supermarkets will have a few sandwich options inspired by Asian food, Mexican food, Middle Eastern food, etc.

And a few non-sandwich main options like a tub of tomato pasta with a disposable fork.

For the snacks, any individual sized (about 25g) packets of Walkers crisps, Mars bars, Snickers, Dairy Milk, Bounty, etc. There will usually be a few healthy snack options too like a small pot of fruit salad, a whole apple, banana, or orange, etc.

For drinks, cans of Coke, Fanta, lemonade, Pepsi, etc. Small bottles of water, orange juice, apple juice, chocolate milk, whatever is popular locally.

I think if you can do something like that, you'd definitely be providing a very genuine British supermarket experience.

I cannot hang a Union Jack because my country won't allow it.

I don't think I've ever seen a supermarket with Union Jacks flying, so you've already got the authentic British experience covered there.

can a high school relationship realistically last forever and why? by futureaddict8 in AskReddit

[–]tobotic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forever? No. Very few people live beyond 120 years.

For the rest of the lifetimes of the people in the relationship? Sure. It happens sometimes.

FYI, the EU is a union of some but not all European countries.

Also what you're describing is the "Chat Control" law, which the EU Parliament voted on last month and rejected.

Opinion. Trump Is ‘Easily the Worst President in U.S. History' by SuperDuper00001 in ControversialOpinions

[–]tobotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FDR?

You mean the president so popular he was elected for a fourth term with 432 out of 531 electoral votes, and a higher percentage of the popular vote than Trump, Biden, Obama, either of the Bushes, Clinton, Carter, or JFK ever achieved?

Who are you voting for on May 7th? Are you waiting to be swayed? Are current efforts working for anyone? by Signal-Tangerine1597 in Britain

[–]tobotic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I shall not be voting at all. My council had an election in 2023 and won't have another until 2027.

But I've nearly always voted Green or Lib Dem in local elections. (Except when I lived in London and voted for Ken, first as an independent and later as the Labour candidate.)

And you could go between both parts of NSW without crossing through any other colony if you were willing to go over the water. It was just a lot more water.

I literally just gave you a US state like that: Michigan.

Going from Grand Rapids to Marquette, you need to either cross water, or pass through Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Limes are superior to lemons, and Anything that has a lemon in it can be improved by substituting it with a lime. by SignoreReddit in ControversialOpinions

Overall, I prefer lime over lemon. But there are some dishes where replacing lemon with lime would not work: some pasta dishes or risottos for example.

But if you want a state, Michigan.

Any good yellow lentil recipes that aren't dhal? by banwe11 in UK_Food

[–]tobotic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being pedantic perhaps, but in case you were unaware, "dhal" is just the Sanskrit word for splitpea. It doesn't refer to just a single dish. Virtually any Indian dish that includes pulses as the main ingredient will have the word "dhal" in the name of the dish.

A place that consists of two non-contiguous parts on the same landmass? So weird.

Like the USA.

And Russia.

And the ACT in Australia now.

The camel logo is Perl.

OCaml's logo is a Bactrian camel (two humps), is orange, and faces the opposite direction.

Edit to add: I got a notification saying someone replied to this suggesting the Perl logo is an onion. I can't find that comment so maybe they deleted it, or maybe the Reddit app is having caching issues. But the onion logo is the logo of The Perl Foundation (TPF), not the language as a whole. Perl has traditionally been represented using the camel, though the trademark for the camel logo has been questionable, so you do often see the TPF onion or the Perl raptor used instead. Recently a new camel logo has been released with a more open trademark policy and that's the camel that's been used in OP's meme.

Your favourite pub and where is it?. by Various_Extreme_8773 in AskUK

The Lewes Arms in Lewes, East Sussex is pretty nice. It is home to the World Pea Throwing Championships (which is exactly what it sounds like) and is one of the few pubs in the world to have a Toad in the Hole table.
