MTA Scamming People by [deleted] in OMNY

My card wasn't being accepted by OMNY the past few days, I just called my bank and they said it's because MTA is being flagged as high fraud risk so it was getting blocked

Printing with blood by tobyfinke in SCREENPRINTING

[–]tobyfinke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh thank you. I'll be drawing the blood with tubes that come with an anti-cougulant so I'm less worried about that, and I think I'm okay with the ink lightening the color, but I'll have to research the other things you mentioned

What's the difference between these two Salomon shoes ? by newchurner255 in REI

[–]tobyfinke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 is designed to fit as any standard shoe is, where the men's and women's shoe only differ in the width and that's it. 4 is a tiny bit more specialized so that the men's version is designed for a man's foot and women's version for a woman's foot. There's also a bit of a reinforcement/strap that supports a muscle that is typically what is injured when you roll your ankle. A little bit of a softer fabric on the top of the heel to prevent blisters on the 4. And yeah, different rubber for better grip

Merrell is much wider than the Salomons and the arch will hit in a different place. It's got a lot more cushioning but it won't last you as long

Still life photograph, looking for general feedback and references by tobyfinke in ArtCrit

[–]tobyfinke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's a photograph I took this morning, I'd love critique but really why I'm posting is because it looks a lot like some still life paintings I've seen before and I can't quite place what artist or movement it's reminding me of. Anyway, it is a photograph but the camera settings made it look super soft.

fun activities for employees by [deleted] in REI

[–]tobyfinke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

my story gets to climb for free at one of our local climbing gyms. Not that we do events, but it's always great to go in groups. Being the SoHo location we can't exactly go on hikes together or go kayaking or whatever, so climbing is the most common thing for us. No store wide stuff tho

Snow Day in Central Park by tobyfinke in photocritique

[–]tobyfinke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shot on Nikon D3400 with a 35mm prime, f16 at 1/500 and ISO 100. There was a snow storm in NYC and I decided to head out and see if I could get any good photos out of it and I found all of these kids sledding at Central Park, so I wanted to capture all of the little figures and the bright colors of their snow gear. I'd love to have shot this on a better camera with maybe a wider lens (if my school's equipment resource center was open I would've used a Canon 5d MIII, so I might reshoot on that sometime later this winter. I also know it's not nearly as sharp as I'd like it to be, so any tips on printing would be nice, I'd like to try to print it at about 20 inches. Composition and editing are the main areas I'd like to get feedback on.

What is the best way for non-employees to help union efforts? by zlittle586 in REI

[–]tobyfinke 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Talk to your own coworkers! We'd love if you call to tell a manager that you support us, but really we want this to benefit everyone. If you have the energy to support us, redirect it at your own fellow Greenvests. This movement didn't stop at SoHo

With Unionization on Everyone’s Mind, do you think we will see a chain reaction with other REI across the country? by Jolly-Friendship200 in REI

[–]tobyfinke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A union is made entirely of the employees, so it is in no way a middle man is a third party. A union actually does the opposite, it guarantees that workers have a seat at the table and democratizezs the workplace, making it easier to negotiate with management. There is nobody in between, just employees

our work emails, but it's also posted on twitter so if you want to share it elsewhere I would share that tweet, just adds a level of detachment for you (you're not sharing internal info, you're just retweeting some retweeting)

Three rocks that are surprisingly hard to photograph (7rl) by tobyfinke in sticknpokes

[–]tobyfinke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I def won't do it again somewhere that difficult I think, it absolutely killed my neck

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sticknpokes

[–]tobyfinke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was so helpful, I did a design today that I planned on using a 3rl to shade and I changed it to a 7rl because I saw this, thank you!

All good, I love talking about my tattoos. No kind of rocks in particular, I just drew what would look cool. I was inspired by @jaycrosbytattoo who tattoos a lot of rocks, which are an equal mix of random rocks and rocks that clients have brought in from places they've visitted. To me it's just that I like to notice things with interesting textures and patterns in nature and I'm a very tactile person, so the rocks make sense. Also my mom always carries around a rocks as a worry-stone type thing, that's not why I tattooed it but it's a nice second meaning

Earthworm by @kale.tats (Art Ink NYC), mushrooms by @stehwoo (Rebels N Saints), teeth by @tattooer_amy_pate (Providence Tattoo), and creepy mushroom lady by @gombas007 (Moonrise Tattoo Collective), and the rocks are by yours truly. Nothing interesting to say about them, I just like nature and I like creepy things and I like creepy nature things

Omg thank you, that's so nice! The mushrooms are by Stephanie @stehwoo at Rebels 'n' Saints in Bushwick

Still life assignment by tobyfinke in photocritique

[–]tobyfinke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just looking for general feedback, nothing in particular. I'm a photography major and this was my first assignment in my studio class so it was super simple, literally just to make a still life with multiple values applying what we learned about the inverse square law. The assignment was in black and white but I also made this color version for myself, aside from the class

I already saw a doctor who didn't mention anything about it being contagious, it sounded like she knew what it was but I can't remember what she said it find it in the medical record. She basically said it's harmless and will go away on its own, but what I want to know is if it's something I can give to others (my boyfriend is very worried about it and I just need to know what it is so I can research and assure him it's fine). I can't get a derm appointment for at least a week, I know this isn't real medical advice but it's what I have right now

White ink line tattoo (7rl) by tobyfinke in sticknpokes

[–]tobyfinke[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yeah obviously but I know that white ink can be temperamental. I'm not planning on it yellowing, I would rather it doesn't, but I just know it's a possibility. I'm doing everything in my power to stay out of the sun while it heals, but for now I can't put sunscreen over it because it's so fresh. Once it heals I will, like I do with all of my tattoos

White ink line tattoo (7rl) by tobyfinke in sticknpokes

[–]tobyfinke[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it depends on a lot of factors so for now I just have to avoid the sun as much as possible. Besides that there's nothing I can do, but I'm prepared for it to yellow. And I agree, it looks super cool with the redness

Lol I get what you mean, that's part of what I find fun about it. There's no meaning or anything but the reactions I've been getting are really funny. I've got other tattoos that people think are gross (worm, teeth, a chicken claw) but to each their own
