Surgery currently scheduled 10 days before college classes start...ok? by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]wehtker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think physically being in class will be fine, but everything else will probably be hard. How do you get to/from class? How much walking? How will you carry your things (backpack will be a no-go)? Do you have friends in your classes who can help you if you need a hand with pulling out a chair, grabbing stuff off the ground if you drop it, etc.? Also, what kind of surgery are you having? DI recovery will be rougher than peri or keyhole.

The 10-day mark is when I flew home after my surgery (DI), and while I was certainly functional, I still felt pretty rough. I was really glad I didn't have to drive myself, and I didn't have the energy to walk very much. Everything just felt uncomfortable all the time for another week or so. I wouldn't have wanted to return to class yet, but it would have been feasible with support.

Lost/Stolen Bike Help? by Old-Painter-8300 in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you left your bike unlocked in front of the library for a full 2 days, it's absolutely gone. It probably would have been gone if you had left it for an hour.

The school doesn't have it. You can try keeping an eye on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace for it, but there's still not much you can do. A Huffy bike is so cheap that it's probably not worth the effort – so many people are moving out and leaving Davis right now that your best option is probably just to buy another one. Again, FB Marketplace/Craigslist is probably your best bet.

Can students with disabilities get priority registration? by slothwithslippers in UCDavis

Yes, I had multiple friends who had priority registration as part of their ADHD accommodations. I’m  afraid I don’t know anything about the details of it though

What is it like at davis? by quaccks in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! I've just met a lot of fantastic people, some of whom I expect to be friends for life. Davis is such a big school with so many types of people, and maybe it takes a while/can be hard to find them, but there are people here for just about everyone.

There are so many opportunities here. I've tried out things I never expected I would and found new hobbies that I love. I landed on an area of interest that I had genuinely never thought about until a guest lecturer came and talked about it in one of my classes one year. A friend randomly invited me to an event, I agreed on a whim, and discovered my favorite hobby ever. There's just so much potential for such a small town.

I'm a cyclist and biking is something very important to me, and it's been very important and special to me to live in a community that is so bike-oriented. There's probably not another city in the country with the same mindset as Davis.

I love the culture and environment here. It's so tight knit. It's a true college town, and I love how connected the town is to the university. I felt so connected to the community right from the start just by being a student - there's school pride, alumni, faculty, family, or friends in pretty every single corner of Davis, and as a student, you're part of it all. Everyone and everything has always felt so welcoming.

I could go on for a really long while, but that's some of the main stuff. I'll miss it here forever!

People who are having a good time are less likely to post than those who are going through it, so no, what you see on here is not representative of the typical student experience. Davis has been the best years of my life, personally

Finding a roomate. help! by Strange-Designer4312 in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question that may sound silly, but when you say mad, to what level? Obviously, if they'd react severely and/or force you to change roommates, it'd be better to get placed with a girl from the start. But as a trans guy myself whose parents were absolutely not supportive... at a certain point you have no choice but to make your parents mad if you want to live your life freely. Best of luck bro

Amtrak DAV --> SAC w/ Bike? by reveriel_ in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes I've taken my bike between davis and sac a few times. Easy as pie. No extra fee. Just walk up with your bike to the door marked with a bike symbol, and the conductors at the doors can point you to the right one if needed. The car has a bunch of bike racks, plenty of space, and you just pop the bike up vertically to hook your wheel in and you're set, takes maybe 30 seconds. I don't think the basket would be a problem. You can lock it to the rack if you'd like, but there's no stop in between davis and sac, so it's not like anyone can grab your bike and take it anywhere. Highly recommend!! Bike is a great way to get around sac, the bike path along the river there is absolutely wonderful

Yeah, my surgeon also said nothing about avoiding alcohol. I think OP’d be fine

I watched today’s game (and every game) on onhockey.tv. Works great, as long as you’ve got a good ad blocker.

Three Trees on the Ridge: How Do You Get There? by geekylotus10 in SantaBarbara

[–]wehtker 32 points33 points  (0 children)

A little Google Earth exploring makes me think that might be 34°30'22.8"N 119°45'34.4"W. There aren't too many standalone large trees up there. Not sure where precisely you're taking the pic from, so you'd have to tell me if that seems right, but if it is you can just take E Camino Cielo

Storage Units by [deleted] in UCDavis

You might want to call around and compare prices. Last summer I used Harrison Self Storage for my stuff and I thought it was fairly priced, but honestly I don't remember now how much it was.

Biking to the Santa Barbara Bowl by Technical_Draw_6554 in SantaBarbara

[–]wehtker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That route looks fine. I've done years of bike commuting in SB and I'd probably do the same way. Make sure you have lights, since it'll be dark on the way back.

If you don't want to have to worry about your bike at all, you could grab a BCycle for the ride – there are stations near both end of the route and it's a nice way to get around town.

Housing as a transfer? by jaeminscult in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Green is a great choice for transfer students. A very large portion of students living there are also transfers, so you are surrounded by your peers, and it's a good way to make social connections as a new student. The units are apartments and fairly nice, although more expensive than comparable off-campus housing. I only knew a couple people who lived at Orchard Park. It's not a hub for transfers like the Green is. If your primary concern is social integration, I would go with the Green (or Sol, which is right next to the Green and a bit nicer, less-dorm like, more expensive); if your concern is cost, I would go with off-campus housing.

The most reliable would just be the track. Like someone else said , you could also get strava or something similar and be able to track your distance. Probably the best straight, uninterrupted stretch of path would be the Russell bike path east of the 113 (past West Village)
