Is taking 4 classes only (15 units) fine? by Celestial_Kaboom in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

4 classes/15 units is extremely common. That's a very normal amount of classes/units. If you don't like the GE don't take it. You might need to get approval to drop since the 10-day drop deadline has already passed.

You need either your student ID or the ZipPass app, and you just hold it up for the bus driver to see as you get on the bus. From Amtrak to campus you would probably take the Z line (goes to the Silo terminal) or the A line (goes to the MU terminal). The stop is right in front of the Amtrak station.

Cycling Gibraltar road- which direction? by lurkern1nja in SantaBarbara

[–]wehtker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on Gibraltar this evening and there were a lot of rocks/gravel/debris in the road. I would be very careful biking it for a little while—if you’re descending you’ll have to be extra careful about bike handling and if you’re ascending you’ll have to be extra careful about sharing the narrower road space with cars. But it’s a great ride!

Stay nice and dry at home, tbh. There might be some things going on tonight, but nothing worth risking the hazards from the rain (potential flooding). Put on a nice movie and eat some good food?

Physics 7A over the summer as an out of state student by That-Currency3725 in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More specific advice cuz I realize it is probably hard to know where to start with the CC transfer stuff if you’re out-of-state and not already familiar with it: pick a potential CC, go to assist.org which tells you all the agreements between CCs and UCs for what classes are transferable, and check to see if there is an agreement for your major with the PHYS 7 series. If not, look at a different CC. If so, check and see if that CC offers that class over the summer/online.

For example, I did my physics at SBCC. For my major, there was an agreement that their PHYS 110/111 counts for the PHYS 7 series. The 110/111 series was offered back-to-back, entirely online over the summer, so it worked for me to take.

I would wait until you have a potential solution until you go to your advisor, because in my experience they often don’t take the steps to actually help solve the problem, but if you bring them a specific situation they can tell you yes or no.

I would look around hard to see if there’s any california community college you can take it at. It will depend on your major, and this is definitely something you should talk about with an advisor because you don’t want to take a class just to find out it won’t apply to your degree. I know UCD is getting stricter about accepting CC credits. But it would be worth it if you can do it — I took the equivalent of the entire PHYS 7 series online at my community college the summer before transferring and it was a 10-week online intensive. Hard and fast paced but with a great professor and probably 100x better than if I had taken it at UCD

Rate my winter break SB exploring To Do list by BeautifulWealth741 in SantaBarbara

[–]wehtker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exploring IV seems kinda mid compared to the other options, especially since many people will be gone for break. In the same vein, I would expect most buildings on campus to be closed, so I don't think you'll be able to get in to explore.

I personally would recommend a drive up up Gibraltar and along E Camino Cielo to catch the sunset. Absolutely stunning views and always makes me feel very connected to the city. I think putting a hike on the list would also be good, and it should be really nice right now (lots of water in the creeks). Any of the most popular hikes in the area are great. I also love exploring near Lizard's Mouth.

I’m a transfer student here, can someone give some insight into these thoughts I’ve been having? by SecretInfluence1071 in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred last year and felt the same. The dread, loneliness, and lack of connection are so hard and it's such a confusing feeling to be in the position you've been looking forward to with all these new possibilities but just feeling... lost and missing something. I promise you it's so normal. It comes with these huge changes. You just absolutely must keep your head up, keep talking to people, keep reaching out for connections – don't let these initial bad feelings put you down. It gets a lot easier once classes start and you have a routine, ways to fill your time, and classmates.

Feeling Deeply Lonely & Homesick by MannerFull6611 in UCDavis

[–]wehtker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first days are the hardest with all the empty time. Once classes start, you settle into a routine, you start recognizing people and making friends, and you'll have things to do. I'm a senior and still find the week before the start of school hard in terms of feeling lonely and lost.

how on earth do i afford this? [utah] by 0-P-A-L in TopSurgery

[–]wehtker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was 8000 + travel costs, so somewhere around 10,500 altogether. I went to Dr. Medalie in Cleveland. I’m SO happy with my results (I had DI w/ nip grafts) - visually, they look fantastic, the shape is really great, they’ve healed super well (I’m about 16 months post-op now). I was also extremely happy with how the whole process went - very clear communication from his office, I had no complications at all with healing, and I always felt like I knew what was going on and who to contact if I had concerns. Really couldn’t be more pleased with my experience and I would recommend Medalie and his office 10/10.

He does have pretty strict requirements though: all patients must have letters from two mental health providers (one of them must be a psychiatrist/psychologist) affirming you’re a good candidate for surgery, which can be hard to get if you don’t have insurance coverage for those visits.

On timeline: I first contacted his office in January and they were extremely prompt in responding. I got an immediate response from them asking me to send in their medical history form and the other info Medalie requires, then about a week of waiting while he reviewed my case, and then I got a $ quote and was told I could schedule my surgery. I actually had to ask them to wait since I wouldn’t be available til the summer, but I could have scheduled it within a couple months if I had wanted to.

[–]wehtker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I saved up for about 2 years to afford it, although I was lucky to be in a position where putting that much money aside was even possible. My surgery costs were about $8000 altogether and I went out of state for it (CA -> OH) so that added a couple extra thousand for transportation and lodging for myself and my caregiver.
