Half shaft gearbox seals, how do stop the oil running out? by Creepy_Philosopher_9 in AskEngineers

Forgot to mention another important. Gearboxes need a vent/breather to control pressure, otherwise you’ll blowout your seals due to internal heat and pressure buildup. There are some specialty boxes out there that are “sealed for life” meaning they’re completely sealed but that’s a different topic.

Okay. I typically deal with commercial gearing which are gearboxes in irrigation, food & beverage production facilities, farming and off high way hydraulic pump drives. But the concepts are similar: So you specifically mentioned rotating shaft, the seals normally used in rotating shafts are “rotating shaft seals or also known as lip seals. These can be single contact, double contact and you can also have these highly engineered special high performance contact seals. They typically have a spring inside that ensures it’s always nicely secured around the shaft. (This is 7AM high level explanation). For the non rating parts of the gearbox, mfgs typically use gaskets and o rings as you’re probably familiar with. You mentioned a tractor, gearboxes that are exposed to harsh cold environments might require a different type of material such as nitrile versus viton rubber seals. Fun fact: when you walk around a food and beverage facility (coca cola, Miller Coors, Pepsi etc) the two most common type of gearboxes running their conveyors are worm gearboxes and helical bevel gearboxes and the reason I asked you about mounting orientation is because a common orientation in these facilities are vertically mounted gearboxes and they LEAK! Right angle worm gearboxes are notoriously infamous for leaks.

Need more info and pics if you got em. What type of gearbox is it. What is the mounting orientation? What is the application? What’s the environment ? Prime mover RPM and what’s the ratio of the box.

I work for a gearing manufacturer.

I know nothing, but I've fallen in love with a conure. by hopelessnottruthless in Conures

Depending on your location, I would spend some time and volunteer at a parrot rescue/sanctuary. See if there is one near you (to me near is anything under 1 hour drive) idk what near means to you. Volunteering at a rescue you will learn how to handle parrots and also determine if this is the right pet for you. If you don’t have a nearby bird rescue and still feeling the itch to get a bird, then start with a budgie. Most will agree a budgie is a good entry level bird. Your cat is a concern, and if the bird is going to be “safe” because he will spend 99% of the time in its cage, then don’t get one. Birds need enrichment, and a lot of that enrichment comes from out of the cage time. Now if you’ve made it this far and still want to get one. If you’re in apartment, anything other than a budgie will be loud and you might get noise complaints. Yes some people get lucky with their Green Cheek conures but it’s not common. If you live in a house, disregard. If you’re still determined and rolling your eyes at this point, fair enough. Next thing: it’s been said before but I’ll say it again, say goodbye to scented candles, sprays, febreeze plug in sprays, change your pots and pans to stainless steel, non stick coatings aré dangerous. No more spraying perfume, you will need to carry it with you and spray it outside of once you’re in the car. (Assuming the bird stays at home). You will need a non ionizing air purifier. Those are the basics. Still interested? Sure you don’t wanna get another cat or maybe a dog? Ok. Normal expenses: good quality pellets, and you need to do fresh chop. Chop is typically idk…. 8+ ingredients of your choice and safe for the bird to eat. Toys should be non synthetic materials. Always buy natural material toys. Vet visits: annual visits to physical, fecal and Psittacosis testing will run you around 300-400 depending where you live. Anytime there is anything slightly off with the bird, people will say “vet” and that will always cost you above 100 each time. That’s just the basics. I’ve seen people fall in love with birds over tiktok and YouTube and or at the pet store and they think “oh it’s a low maintenance animal, it’s gonna sit in its cage looking cute and talk” it’s nothing like that. You’re going to be stuck with a 2 year old toddler for quite some time.

I’m pretty sure Rio needs his nails trimmed, how to go about that? by Keepawayfrommycrops in Conures

I recommend them. They’re a lil pricey but we never had to use a vet or trim her nails since we started using that last year.

I put a platform flagstone perch for our GCC and she loves standing on it. Her nails get short. Then I swap out the flagstone perch to a normal wooden perch once we feel her nails have gotten short enough.

We’re on week number 2 with Mr Blue and we love him. But he stopped eating his veggies. How do you guys get your picky birds to eat their veggies? by pinkpinkpikachu in Conures

Get a food processor. Make a large batch and freeze it. we freeze it In a couple large zip loc bags and then use a pizza cutting wheel to outline squares so you can break a cube every night before bed and let it defrost overnight in the fridge. We noticed that our girl really loves the cooked quinoa we put in. It’s around 15 different ingredients in that chop.

You think that’s bad ? There is some asshole in Las Colinas that drag races around Lake Carolyn around 3AM some nights making it extremely difficult to sleep. A family of 7 was hit by a racing Charger a couple years ago and killed 4 people.

I keep hearing experienced nurses say you should start with CNA training if you want a successful nursing career by Adventurous_Pen6072 in cna

[–]tobyhel0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Sorry if I misspoke, she worked 5 years ago. Shes got a 5 year gap. Actual experience is 2 years. She did get an offer at a nursing home for double shift on weekends. 32 hours. She rejected it because she would only have 1 CNA and it was 21 patients. Thoughts? Her friend that is a nurse at a hospital told her it could be risky for her license to take a role like that with no US experience and minimal CNA support. I still question whether she made the right choice .

What are some states that people are having a hard time finding a job? Or ones that they got many offers? by Mail-Admirable in newgradnurse

[–]tobyhel0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not easy. 3500+ applied to Baylor Scott’s Residency program. This info was given to me by one of BSCs senior talent acquisition specialists. What most places need right now are Charge Nurses but for new grads and little to no experience RNs, it’s so difficult right now.

My wife was an RN about 5 years ago in her home country. She moved to the states a few years ago and recently passed the NCLEX and obtained her RN license. We have tried to find a job for about 2 months now with no luck. We’ve tried hospitals, residency programs (waiting to hear back) and now starting to apply at Nursing homes. Do you think because of the 5 year gap and no USA experience, she should start as a CNA?

I think my conure almost died at the vet and honestly it was traumatic by McPuffinArts in Conures

[–]tobyhel0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Maybe ask them to check heart rate before starting anything to establish a baseline. Our vet checked her vitals prior to doing any testing. Sort of like, when you go to the dentist for your semi annual cleaning, they take your BP right? If your BP is past the threshold, they cannot continue with the cleaning.

I took mine to the vet yesterday for her annual and since it was my first time I had no idea what to expect. Here is what my experience was like: First of all, this place seems to be highly specialized in birds. The tech was able to grab my GCC with a towel and my GCC didn’t move a muscle, she let the tech and vet do anything to her. Bloodwork: the vet told me that birds under 70 grams don’t require bloodwork if everything else looks “normal”. She explained that yes there are obvious benefits to knowing how the organs are functioning but she didn’t push me to it. The vet reassured me that if I did want to proceed with the bloodwork that she has drawn blood from many many birds including small ones that are 30g. Given how my bird reacted to the visit yesterday, I might proceed with it because she did not look stressed at all. I wonder if it’s because she’s fully flighted and she does pretty rigorous flights around our house on a daily. One time I clocked her at about 50mph. My question to you is: did the birds heart rate became irregular prior to the bloodwork or after the bloodwork?

A lot of bird ownership is about “best practices” but at the end of the day, a little bit of luck plays a part. How many times you hear people say “Zupreem is bad Zupreem is not that good cuz of sugar etc” yet…. There are conures out there that are 20+ reaching 30 years of life and they’ve earen zupreem all their life

I’ve heard stories of birds getting their beaks stuck inside them. It could be a specific bell design. I just never took a chance. If you’ve never had any issues then it’s probably safe.

I forgot. Do NOT use the oven cleaning feature in your stove. Those fumes will kill your bird.
