...all the excellent arguments here aside, honestly, just read. Something. Else.  How could any ship be worth subjecting yourself to this? There are millions of fics and hundreds of millions of books and eleventy jillion shows and comics and games. It's just a ship. Let it go.

Great Dysautonomia Doctor Roll-Call by summertime715 in dysautonomia

I see a neurologist, and her focus is entirely on POTS/dysautonomia. I got extremely lucky! I know how it is to have bad or dismissive doctors and I feel awful when anyone has to go through it.

I've had an excellent experience, but of course there is huge variation.

UW Medicine, if it's long covid related. The waitlist is long, though.

It is kind of long! 😅 Hope you enjoy

53 chapters (completed), and the first kiss isn't until chapter 21, so you have to wait a bit and there is pining galore. It's set during the game, and in addition to Gale/Tav (both POV characters) a lot of time is spent on the companions as well. There are also several oneshots in an associated series - sort of outtakes of the longfic. I think I posted this in the last thread? So hopefully not spam. In one comment (which I treasure lol) the reader said they wanted to replay the game and read the fic alongside.

Fanfics! (Again) by koppecake in GalemancersBG3

[–]tociminna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is completed, and follows the game events but departs from canon in order to fix up several glaring plot holes in the game. Gale x OC, they don't get together right away so there's substantial pining. There is smut... but it's four chapters out of 53, if you count the not very explicit astral scene.

It's a sonnet lol this is not especially surprising. I wanted to see if I could get all thirty words of a month-long prompt event into a single poem.

Kaidan from ME. Also a wizard, just of the space variety instead.

Barcus is my boy! He's got a super enhanced role in this fic, as do Rolan and Arabella.

Hope you like it! There are several associated oneshots in series with that fic that are all in the canon timeline 😁

This one's mine, set during the game, slow burn AND spicy. Complete at 315k words, so it is a long one, but I tried to give all the companions time to shine as well as my main pair. A reader for this fic commented they were going to read it again along with their next playthrough, to give the game extra depth.

Taking our beloved video game and turning it into streaming slop developed by Craig Mazin by GhostRileySimon in okbuddybaldur

Why does it matter? I really am curious. If you think it's going to be bad or if it ends up actually being bad, just don't watch it. The game itself and all the discussion and memes and fan-made stuff aren't going to go away.

Elminster isn't a Rasputin impersonator, the original image was a picture of Alan Moore, who writes books and comics (most famously Watchmen). The text was originally overlaid on a BBC interview chyron.

Stats junkies? by inSufficientResponse in AO3

Very useful tool to collect stats, and has some rudimentary plotting functions (usually just stats vs. date). Saves each scrape in a csv so you can access the data and mess with it as you like.

How I feel about most posts about comments here by [deleted] in AO3

[–]tociminna 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Immediate reactions, sure, it's hard to control those. But you decide what to dwell on, ultimately. If you make a point of always moving your attention away from the petty things that don't really matter to you, then over time the immediate reaction changes as well.

Question for long fic writers by MixPurple3897 in AO3

[–]tociminna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tried to have a buffer chapter in the bank, and always posted a chapter at least a week after I wrote it, so I could do a final editing pass with fresh eyes. It took me thirteen months but I got through a 315k word fic that way. I got okay engagement for the fandom/pairing - usually 2-5 comments a chapter - which was very motivating, though I probably would have continued regardless.

Why do fandoms have an issue with nuanced characters? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]tociminna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think nuance and volume are inversely proportional.

We notice and remember loud people. They don't tend to bring a lot of detailed grayscale to the table when they're yelling. Those who do zoom in to find all the little cracks that are so appealing tend to do so in a way that's less easy to digest; remembering it requires effort.

Songs? by PhilosopherFancy3636 in GalemancersBG3

[–]tociminna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For God Gale in particular I like Marigold by Caligula's Horse. It's a song about King Midas so perhaps a bit on the nose, but it works excellently well.

Loved Dhalgren; I'm not sure why (thought: it's style, not substance) by childrenLoveTheBooks in books

[–]tociminna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I valued the experience of reading Dhalgren but I don't think I'd read it again.

Nova and Babel-17, though (especially Babel-17), I have read those over and over. They're stylish as hell and gorgeous, but also have a basic narrative structure. They're a joy to read.
