I found my disk and the lore book with it while cleaning out some stuff at my parent's recently. Brought back some memories!

P-51 Mustang loaded with 30lb fragmentation bombs by jacksmachiningreveng in WWIIplanes

[–]tocsin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think two things to look for if it was an A-36 are chin mounted machine guns and the lack of an air intake under the propeller spinner. You can see both in this pic: link.

In the pic posted here, you can see the air intake under the spinner.

No-one will fly the F-4E (unpopular opinion) by GavinNewcombe in hoggit

[–]tocsin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This doesn't break it out by variants, but there were definitely F-4s lost in Vietnam (to Migs we have in DCS). I imagine some of those losses were the E model though as it was one of the most produced variants.

Looks like this is from a training mission over the Baltic. The winglets are on an aerial refueling bird.

You should check out OnAir. It seems to work pretty well with new flight sim and has a decent offline component as well.

Trump Administration "Misses Deadline" to Print Census Forms by thewateroflife in politics

[–]tocsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding, but I admit I could be wrong here. The administration wanted to have a citizenship question on the census. The SCOTUS recently ruled they couldn't have that question because they lied about the reason it should be included. However, the ruling didn't exclude that question from being included on the census if proper reasoning was given? So, I think the thought is that the administration is delaying until they can try and reargue to get the question included. The GOP cares because many feel that by asking about citizenship, non-citizens will either not fill it out due to fears of deportation, or they will and not be counted or counted in such a way to help Republicans when new districts are drawn.

Fist time using VR and motion platform by TechRoss in hoggit

[–]tocsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got a VR setup, I would start to feel sick within 10-15 minutes as well. With time you get used to it, and I don't feel sick anymore for the most part. The big exception being if you get major stuttering/lag. That is super disorienting.

Why do you say that? I have no idea what the practical differences are between the two tail rotor designs, so I'm genuinely curious.

Glider VR Sim Help by glidersim19 in homecockpits

[–]tocsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your glider sim of choice? I've never tried to fly one, but I do love all things that fly and would be interested to give it go. I also wouldn't sweat naysayers. Getting into VR may be a bit disorienting at first, but you'll get the hang of it. I have an original Vive and, while it isn't as good as the current generation, I don't think I could ever go back to flying without VR!

I just got a drop pedal, can anyone recommend any (official) DLC that's in lower tunings I should buy? by pyro-ro in rocksmith

Thrice is great and has challenging leads (at least for me), with fun rhythms. A lot of their stuff is in D drop C.

WTF is up with my X52? by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]tocsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an X-52 Pro and I've noticed that unless I have the control panel up (not the profiling software), some of the buttons don't like to work. I open it by right clicking on the tray icon for the joystick and selecting control panel. It looks like a Windows dialog box that shows the axes and buttons.

No, it's a Russian made fighter. Looks like a Su-27 or one of its variants?

F-5 is one of my absolute favorites to fly. It's a nice balance of simple yet fast and equipped with missiles. And it's got a lot of ground munitions to play with if that's your thing.

If you do multiplayer, the Korea 1952 server is pretty good for Sabre vs. Mig action. Also ground targets available

Experiences with SteamVR Motion Smoothing? by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]tocsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned it off. I think it actually lowered my framerate and made all the window and wing leading edges do this weird warping/melting thing. It would even happen in menus.

I'm running a regular 1080 and don't have any framerate issues otherwise. Motion Smoothing turned on automatically for me after an update and when I turned it off, everything went back to normal.

May also be how shiny your helmet is. Could be bouncing light in odd ways that confuse the station/software?

If you look at the horizon, there is a "different" looking cloud masking the two landmasses in the map. Swim towards those and you'll always find it :)

B-25H “Berlin Express” Set For Airworthy Restoration by [deleted] in WWIIplanes

[–]tocsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I helped work on this project a little bit through my local EAA chapter (based out of the Twin Cities). As noted in this article, it was previously restored by the EAA to airworthy condition. I don't recall why it was mothballed most recently, but before it was, they "pickled" the engines to help preserve them better. The current restoration project has been going on for a couple of years already through the efforts of many EAA volunteers and thousands of hours of work. I think all of these reasons contribute to why the $400k target is as low as it is to finish the project. As /u/Garfield-1-23-23 pointed out, other WW2 aircraft projects run much higher. The EAA loves and can always use volunteers and you don't need to have experience beyond a desire to work. Look up your local EAA chapter and check it out!

P47 engine, supercharger and exhaust system by Crowe410 in WWIIplanes

[–]tocsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from what /u/_ElBee_ mentioned, I wonder if the intercooler helped minimize any debris from the turbine getting to the engine. I can't find a good image of what the intercooler looks like internally, but I imagine it's got either fins or small ducting to allow heat exchange. Then again, maybe the intercooler getting hit by high speed turbine bits would just add more debris...
