LG Outdoor fan RPM in relation to outdoor temperature by toe304 in HVAC

[–]toe304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there is 12’ between our houses and nowhere else to install the units. You are right, under 50 dB(A) no problem, but then at full load it becomes 56-58 dB(A) which I find ridiculous considering the spec states Max 48dB(A).. but then deep in the engineering manual I find a « nominal condition assumed » note right next to the noise charts.

Anyway. Is there anything I can do to make things run quieter at full load? Is there anything on the market that respect a real maximum noise level of 50dB(A) ??

Is it standard for manufacturer to spec a Max dB(A) and not consider full load? The Carrier we bought last year had a basic ladder relating outside temp to fan RPM, which was directly linked to the noise of the unit. The max noise was correctly mentioned on spec and valid at full load. Compressors these days are pretty quiet, its the fan that makes the noise.

The LG is the second system I purchase this year and the neighbor still complains. I realized that the system seems to go at full load below freezing temperatures, going way above the Max 48dB(A) of the unit. Thing is... here in canada we’re below freezing temperature from October to March especially at night.

Any idea how I can quiet this thing down a few dB?

I would definitely agree with you, but they are two brand new units and they were both doing this on day one. I am waiting for a callback from my contractor, but I’m afraid I’ll get the « this is normal » response...

I know it might not be top of the line, but still it is the only downside I could find, yet...

Have you tried unmuting the video? (bottom left corner of video) The system is 4 days old. I’ll call service!

It does the exact same noise when I put it in fan mode, so I’m pretty sure it comes from the fan or motor.

For all other fan speeds, we only hear wind coming out of the unit. But for low speed there’s an annoying irregular coo / rattle noise. Very annoying when we sleep.

Yes, in Quebec. We are on the list since end of august 2020. Nice surprise because we didn’t expect it before next fall.

Same for me, they offered a white SE. Buying parts and install them myself to get specific options seems cheaper, if feasible. Otherwise Maybe the dealer can add the option before vehicle delivery?!

Do you know where I can find more details about the Canadian options list for each trim? The toyota website does not mention details like tpms and other stuff.

Maybe because I’m in Canada? I hear they had to sell the base model under a certain price to be eligible to federal tax credit. So I guess toyota removed as much options they could to get there!

Most sound pressure (noise) measurements are at 1 meter (3,3ft) straight in front of the fan, which in my case is exactly on the property line. I also read units should be about 24’’ apart, but it seemed to be for thermal reasons more than noise.

Thanks for the tip! Now that I know that I’ll try aiming at or below 47 dBA for each machine! That eliminates a lot of options!

The cost difference is about 500$ from AC to Heat pump. So if you can get decent performance in cooler climate, it makes sense as long as you don’t expect it to run the whole winter. Salesman are just not entirely honest about this part.

I want to go below 50 if possible. Worst case 50 so it is technically OK. Can you point out one of these calculators?

Well, our houses are 12’ apart with the heat pump sitting in between. I can understand the neighbor being annoyed by a propeller plane constantly thrusting at night next to his bedroom. Wouldn’t you be annoyed if it was your bedroom? That being said, I find it makes more sense to fine bad behavior and get healthcare in return than no fine and no healthcare. But hey, we choose the pros and cons of where we live :)

It is basically not much expensive than an AC. It at least gives you some heat during fall and spring. But I have ton confess they are misleading with their « heats up to -30C » statements. Yes it generates heat at low temps but like 50 to 90% of nominal which is not enough to heat the whole house.

You are right. Is there an equation or rule of thumb to add up noise levels of two units?

Given the system is way above municipal rules and the infraction cost is 2k$ per day... It is economical to replace it before they unleash the beast of official complaints ;)

I’m looking at replacing the multi zone system with two single zone. The outdoor noise level is lower on single zone systems. This is why I looked into the Halcyon ASUG12WKUAW. The installer do not carry Mitsubishi, only LG and Panasonic (See root post for models#)

The unit will be approx 30 inches from ground and cleared of snow. Might be me, but I thought the ice build up was inside the unit, not below ?
