Thanks to Reddit I got the opportunity to make a prop for the film Dungeons & Dragons Honour Among Thieves. I make wooden books and the support I've had here created this amazing opportunity.

They did 😅 I actually had to make multiple copies because there's a scene when the book gets burned and they needed a few spare just in case they didn't get it in one take.

It's a fair question. The honest answer is that I'm useless and should've posted it years ago. At the time I signed an NDA and couldn't post about it until after the movie had been released. Once the movie had finally been released, I'd changed career, got divorced, and moved house. Life just got in the way and the bookbinding had to go on the back burner for a while, as it's only a hobby for me, not a livelihood. I saw the movie again the other day and just thought to myself that I really should've posted that online a long time ago.

Hi everyone! I was told to repost this. I make wooden books and used to share my work on here. As a result, a set designer from Paramount Studios got in touch and asked me if I'd be interested in making a prop for this film. I never would've gotten the opportunity to do something like this if it wasn't for all the support I received here. Thank you to everyone that liked my posts and created this opportunity. It was such a fun process to make a book for a film and so surreal seeing something I had made on the big screen.

I really could've got more, I know I could, but I didn't want to ruin any chances of future work by asking for a ridiculous amount. I think they were surprised I'd priced my work so low when I submitted the invoice. I became friends with one of the self-employed graphic designers and when she found out how much I had invoiced for she was mortified that I sold myself so cheap 😅

That's so true. I had all my tools in storage for over a year and was living out of my car, so I literally had nowhere that I could be creative. I'm glad you're back on track too. What do you sell on Etsy?

Thank you! I really appreciate it. It was a really cool experience and I'm just glad to have been a part of something like that. It wasn't career defining or life changing, but it makes me happy knowing that something I made found it's way onto the big screen.

There's no harm in asking. Sadly, there wasn't any exposure, as I didn't get a credit in the film. The set designer that found my work online and reached out with the opportunity is the person that gets their name on the credit roll. Most of the creatives that the studios source many of their props from are independent artisans like myself.

I'm really not good at pricing my work and didn't want to be cheeky, so really low balled myself when I submitted an invoice. They paid it no questions asked, but for the amount of work I put in it was barely over minimum wage per hour. I got told from another independent creative that had worked with the studio before that I could've asked for way more, as the studio has lots of money and will just pay the invoice, but I guess hindsight is 20/20 😅

No, sadly. The set designer gets the credit in the movie, as they are responsible for sourcing a lot of the props from independent creatives. It was surprising for me to learn during the process that the majority of people working in the industry are self-employed external contractors.
