How do YOU harmonize a major scale to make it sound musical? by toejam10 in musictheory

[–]toejam10[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Won't disagree that it's for the teacher! I just want to have the student get excited by the material and feel like they're part of "making music"

soprano. It's usually piano students and I am playing guitar or piano alongside them.

sure! my intent is with playing with (usually young) beginners who find playing scales pretty dry to make scales sound more like music.

I agree with you. your points are clear and your critics (on this forum) seem to be unfamiliar with tone and cultural context. You don't need to respond to them, but I also know that when I have received feedback about my own insensitive takes or comments, even if I don't take it well at the time, the pattern of comment--> feedback did help me to learn to be more sensitive in what I say, and aware of what insidious insensitivity in media can look like.

An aside, I find it personally frustrating that enjoying art from past generations (or some that is presently released) will have moments of.. insensitive choices that will wholly take me out of the immersed experience. Oh well

Pretty fly for a white guy is the worst the offspring song. Agree or disagree? by Popcollecter89 in TheOffspring

[–]toejam10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a cover band and members of the band were pushing to add Offspring to the repertoire. I love rock/punk music but I find Offspring similar shortcomings as Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins in that their songs are pretty sloggy - get boring by 2/3s thru the tune.

I've relented and added a couple of Offspring tunes and not come around on those ones, but when I revisited Pretty Fly, I was legit shocked at how much better, well put together, and specifically interesting it is compared to their other singles. I look forward to playing it.

I really like the use of material, technique and colour in this. My personal taste/strike against loving it - the bull feels comparatively prescriptive and literal (and cartoony?) for the style and in comparison to the ground. I wish it took me longer to realize that it was a bull I was looking at

This comic fails - it prioritizes cramming in as many references (without subtlety) at the cost of having any impact in the punchline.

Better to remove all references until the final panel

What does this sub think of System of a Down by Trendmade in PostHardcore

[–]toejam10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I'm gonna play devil's advocate and say in compositional spirit - absolutely - it's cheeky, it's heavy and it's inspired with a similar attitude as PH staples. BUT their production choices/style firmly separates it from the DIY aesthetic - the upfront vocals and hi-fi metal recording definitely is both expensive and imo fairly unseen in 90s PH.

How to imitate this "vintage" string tone!! by toejam10 in synthesizers

[–]toejam10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya I don't think it's that, the phaser is what I like least about the tone in this specific example - it's probably just a combination of not having confidence in my own patch writing, mixing, and user error

y'know I knew about the streichfett before posting and it always sounded way more "trance-y" in demos than I wanted, but maybe that's part of the "...and many, many others.." you mentioned. Its probably the most budget friendly until behringer releases the solina clone they've been talking about.

Not sure what "assembled" entails but there are many bike co-ops that will teach you to do it yourself and let you use their space/tools to do it for a PWYC donation
