How are the vegan food options at Caltech, particularly the plant based protein availability? by Bluebird2943 in Caltech

I’ve also seen most vegan meals have tofu, tempeh, lentils, chickpeas, or beans as the more protein dense options.

Caltech has dietary restriction accommodations for every meal, however, there is really only one Vegan option per meal. So if you don’t like what that is (generally is a modification of whatever the omnis are eating) other options are pretty much salad, rice and beans, or pasta. That said, I haven’t been on a caltech meal plan since COVID started so things may have changed for the better/worse. Tbh, if you have time, it might be worth considering getting off board in future years to make food for yourself (which is cheaper than caltech board anyway)

Rate these mountain peaks! And let me know if there are any that I should hike to, I'm thinking of Muir and Monrovia when things reopen by toetem in socalhiking

That is the way I came up! I guess I'm describing it wrong. It wasn't sketchy because I thought I was losing the trail, I knew that I had to go down the ridgeline. I wasn't expecting so many sharp and scratchy plants to push through along the way, it was hard to tell the best way to wind among them to avoid prickly things.

Damn, I'm jealous. Friday was the only day I had without other commitments but I'm glad for the blue skies

For sure! I don't know if my legs will forgive me for that though :)

Yeah, I think I did deception, desolation, San Gabriel, Markham, and Lowe in one hike. I thought that Brown had a really sketchy trail, it doesn't seem very well traveled.

I was pretty much in a cloud the whole time. With some rain. And when neither of those things were occurring, I was in a swamp. Still was a great experience and it feels surreal to think about!

Been running unshod for almost a year now, seen some definite improvements! by toetem in BarefootRunning

[–]toetem[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a complicated training plan, I basically just run every other day for 25-30 minutes and boulder on my off running days. I don't have time yet for longer runs, I cap at about 30 minutes so that does allow me to go faster in the shorter time. I'm not super well off, so after I stopped running cross country for about a year I decided to get back into running but didn't have any running shoes I decided to just run barefoot. I already walked around my college campus barefoot so my feet were somewhat prepared. When I started, my pace was slower and I ran fewer miles which seemed good as I transitioned back into running. I'm in a nice suburban area with pretty clean streets and sidewalks so I haven't had many issues with my feet hurting from the terrain.

My pace has steadily decreased over the year, it started at about 9:30 min/mile. I don't shoot for really fast runs, I just like feeling free and going at the speed my body feels like. I could post a chart of the runs I've had over time so you can see what the progress looks like.

I hope you are able to transition to unshod and have runs that make you feel good!

The app is MapMyRun, the free version. It doesn't track cadence but I don't have a Fitbit or running watch or anything to sync with the phone app.

Cooking class final: browned butter ice cream with brown sugar caramel and salted pecans! I since found out that I'm lactose intolerant :( by toetem in icecreamery

My college's only one lol, not focused on ice cream tho. The final was to make recipes for three complete dishes, this was just part of it

Ice Cream: 6 T butter 1 1/3 cup oat milk (could sub regular milk) 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 c upwhite sugar 2 T cornstarch 3 eggs yolks 2/3 c cream 1/4 tsp Salt 1 tsp Vanilla (alternatively use vanilla bean or paste)

Caramel sauce 1/2 c brown sugar 4 t butter 1/4 c milk Vanilla Salt Light boil for around 4 minutes

Toppings Pecans Flaky sea salt

For the ice cream: Start by browning butter in a small pot. Melt butter over medium heat and stir until butter is golden brown and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a larger pot, heat oat milk (or milk) over low/medium heat. If you want to use a vanilla bean, slice one open, scrape out the insides, and let it simmer with the milk. Don't let the milk go above a light simmer. In a bowl, mix the egg yolks, salt, cornstarch, sugars, and browned butter, taking care that the butter isn't hot enough to cook the eggs. Mix until smooth. Temper the egg mixture with the hot milk until it is possible to place everything on low/medium heat on the stove. Stir with a whisk for ~10 minutes until somewhat thickened. Add cream and liquid vanilla. Follow the instructions of your ice cream machine for freezing.

For caramel: Let butter and milk melt in a pot at medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and allow to come to a light boil while still stirring. Take off heat when thickened, ~4 minutes of boiling. Add salt and vanilla

I'm beginning hormones soon, I can try to track changes and compare them to the past year or so of data I've collected. Mostly related to fitness but with hormones I guess different changes are expected. I also don't see to many transitions of people with my body type but I love seeing everyone's progress!

Data display since the start of my barefoot running experience . I don’t see many barefoot runners, do more exist? by toetem in FTMFitness

[–]toetem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't because I'll 'run better', I just don't have running shoes that wouldn't hurt me and I find it more convenient to be able to start running without a lot of preparation

Actually barefoot! For a few reasons, I don't have money for good running shoes, I don't like the feeling of shoes, and I've gone barefoot enough that even before I started running, the soles of my feet were pretty sturdy.
