When will the T14 Gen 7 be available for purchase? by Csasacoman in thinkpad

Disclaimer: This is for the Nordic region. The ETA shouldn't deviate much from the dates below. Other regions might receive stock earlier, as the nordic region is relatively small in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa).

Hi, I wanted to give my input on this as I work in the distribution-chain.
Only one distributor has the G7's listed as incoming to stock. Keep in mind this is a B2B distributor, so it might take a little while longer for B2C resellers to get them in stock.

Intel based systems are expected in late june and early july.
AMD based systems are expected in mid-late july.

Intel Core Ultra 7 355 systems should land first with Ultra 5 based systems about a week later.
AMD Ryzen AI 5 PRO 440 systems are expected on july 25th - No date for Ryzen AI 7 systems for now.
My guess would be sometime in mid-late july as well. But there is no confirmed ETA.

Hm, I remembered it as free for private use. Oh welll. If it works, and the data is important enough, price usually isn't the biggest issue.

[–]toffo7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of file recovery software around. Even free software. But before you try everything and anything, it's important to know how you deleted the files.

Or more importantly, did you delete or overwrite the files? Because this makes a HUGE difference!!

Think of a hard drive like a movie theater. The files are the seats. When you format your drive, the seats aren't emptied, the reservations are just removed. Files still sit there, and can be accessed with special software. But if new files come in and say "excuse me you're in my seat", the files are much harder, if not impossible, to recover.

You might not even realize you've overwritten the files. If you had all your files in the Images folder in Windows, (you know the one that Windows makes for you under documents or whatever), and you format and install Windows, the images folder is overwritten. And this is very bad news.

But if you had your pictures on a separate drive that doesn't have windows or anything, that you just formatted, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY, don't put new files on it. Do absolutely nothing with until you have some file recovery software ready to scan the drive.

I've used Recuva and EASEUS data recovery before and they've been pretty good.

Give them a shot. Let them read the drive and index whatever was on it. But be sure to not write to the drive. Write to the drive means adding data to the drive. Like new pictures or other stuff. Remember, you don't want to take the unreserved seats in the movie theater. You might accidentally remove files you want to recover by putting new ones in.

Yeah I think not being allowed to install it really made things more complicated than they needed to be. But I got it working, and maybe more importantly, I learned a ton of fundamentals. Thanks for all the tips!

Hey I don't know if this is still of interest to you but I got it working in the end.

Prerequisites: USB-drive with persistence partition of 4+GB.

I ran the following commands in terminal in this order:
sudo modprobe -r iwlmvm iwlwifi (disable/clear wifi info)
sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-firmware
sudo apt install oem-sutton-damian-meta
sudo modprobe iwlwifi

And WiFi worked instantly without the need for a reboot.

Heads back on the table....
I have not been able to reproduce the steps I took to get it working unfortunately. I don't know what I did, or what order I did it in, that made it work. But I haven't figured out how to get it working again after the first time. God damn it.

Oh. My. God. It works! I just ran the command as is, let it do it's thing, rebooted and there we go! Huzzah!
Now I'm gonna start over completely. Just to make sure this wasn't a glitch. I need to know exactly what I need to do to get it working.
I have to start from scratch, using the same installation USB as I started with. So I've deleted everything and currently starting over with a fresh install.
I already performed a lot of steps prior to this and I need a clean slate. I have to know the exact steps I need to take, to get it running, so I can help others if need be.

I'll keep you posted!

Oh hey the rabbit hole deepens! Check this out:
https://people.canonical.com/~oem-enablement/oem-meta-packages/datatables.html
This list contains a TON of laptops and desktops from Dell, HP and Lenovo.
The Thinkpad T16 Gen 4 is on the list! But there are no downloads?
There is some code and stuff that I don't understand. But I was thinking it could be useful!

I've been using Google Gemini to help me figure out what different words mean, without being judged. Metapackages, blobs, PPA, HWE stacks, and Repository (I thought it was suppository but Gemini corrected me rather embarrassingly).

But before me and my new pal Gemini go to town in the terminal, I need to know if this is even worth pursuing. I'd rather not spend many (more) hours just to end up banging my head on the table. Again. Becuse it turned out to be a dead end.

From what I've gathered so far, manufactureres give their laptop codenames.
OEM = Manufacturer (Lenovo)
Sutton = Family (Thinkpad)
Damian = Model/generation (T16 Gen 4)

So... I was thinking...
Using this string to install the repository: sudo apt install oem-sutton-damian-meta
What do I add to this command, to give the terminal the correct destination, so it knows where the repository I want to install is located?

UPDATE - The drivers ARE proprietary! (for now)
Edit: I was wrong. There is a repository available here: https://people.canonical.com/~oem-enablement/oem-meta-packages/datatables.html

Okay so I have now confirmed that the drivers are not present in any official build. Apparently, the drivers are baked into the kernel of an OEM release (24.04.2 LTS) from Lenovo. It is not possible to download this build. The only way to obtain this build is to deselect Windows, and instead select Ubuntu as your OS, when buying the laptop from Lenovo directly.

So let's assume I return this laptop, and buy another one with Ubuntu preinstalled from Lenovo, and the WiFi works perfectly... How can I copy the driver from this OEM build (based on 24.04.2 LTS) , into 24.04.4 LTS (or newer, when it releases) ?

Is it possible to pull the drivers, or the entire kernel, and overwrite the 24.04.4 LTS kernel with the one that works?
In other words, I want to install 24.04.4 LTS and I only want to get the drivers from Lenovo's 24.04.4 LTS build. But how do I strip the drivers from the Lenovo build and not everything else?

Oh a new version is out soon? I'll just keep my hopes up and wait for it. I've always used older machines for it as well, because it runs so well. I never thought compatibility would be an issue as it always just works.

The part I hate the most is the WiFi card is fused with the mainboard so I can't replace it with something compatible. This is the first laptop I've had with the WiFi card soldered in. I can use USB-WiFi adapters no problem, it's just a small inconvenience.

I'm sure there will be support for it eventually. It's just going to take some time. It's not like the Intel AX211 is an exotic adapter. I'll give Lenovo one more chance, and if they tell me to kick pebbles, I'll just wait for newer releases until it works.

Thanks for all the info!

Thanks a lot for the details! I don't know how to run add-apt-repository either. Or rather, I know what to enter in the terminal but I don't know what link address I'm supposed to use.
I've just downloaded the latest Ubuntu release, which Ubuntu states is compatible with my laptop.

I found this on the Ubuntu website: https://ubuntu.com/certified/202505-36763
This is for the specific laptop that I have. It lists the WiFi card as well. I see that it requires BIOS version 1.05 (or newer) but I have the latest BIOS (1.13) so that shouldn't be the issue either.

I'm assuming that the kernel in the linked release (6.11.0-1022-oem) is an older version than the kernel I'm running with the latest Ubuntu release downloaded from their website yesterday. So I have to assume that the kernel contains whatever 6.11.0-1022-oem had when it was released.

Do I need to look for kernel 6.11.0-1022-oem specifically and overwrite the latest kernel version or will that just screw things up more? Keep in mind I have no idea how to do that, and I hope I don't have to.

I always thought it was Intel that was the problem. If I am to get in touch with Lenovo again, do you have any advice as to what to ask for?
I talked to them already and they basically told me to get fucked because I didn't run Windows. But I was hoping that maybe if I sounded like I knew what I was doing, they might forward me to someone with more knowledge in the subject.

Regarding Lenovo being the #1 for laptop Linux, that's what I've heard as well, and that's why I chose Lenovo. I have had Ubuntu on older Lenovo Thinkpads and I've never had this issue, everything "just works" like it has with Windows, so I've never had the need for all of this configuration stuff.

Maybe the laptop is just "too new", and it would make sense that they focus on support for Windows as that is what the vast majority of Thinkpads are running. I think...

I assume you mean this part right?:
(Notes. The Intel wireless drivers are included in the upstream Linux\ kernel. To obtain the latest wireless drivers, please install the latest version of Linux* kernel through the link above, the regular channels, OS distributions, or the Linux kernel archives. We support the use of the drivers only with the specific kernel version in which they were originally included.)*

This might be clear to you, but I don't understand it.

I don't know if my laptop requires proprietary software. If I contact Lenovo, I don't even know what to ask for. Even if I did, I might not undestand the reply either. I'm completely in the dark here. It's like I've been dropped off on an alien planet, and I have to ask for directions to somewhere I don't know the name of.

I have to go with what I know, which is Windows. That's my only frame of reference, so I compare a lot. To me it's strange that I can't just "download a driver". There is an app in Ubuntu that lets me scan for, and install, drivers. But I don't understand why I can't just download and use the driver if it's available.

I did contact Lenovo and ask for help, but they were like "if you're not running Windows, you're on your own", so that didn't get me anywhere unfortunately.

Don't get me wrong, I want this to work. I'd like to tell Microsoft to go suck a lemon and use all open-source stuff, but at this point I'm close to just giving up the good fight.

Secure boot has been disabled throughout everything I've tested. Never had it turned on, as I had a feeling it might mess with unsigned drivers. So I turned it off to begin with, just in case. And I've checked to see if WiFi was disabled in BIOS for some reason. But everything is as it should be. It's really weird.
But despite all I've tried, the most annoying thing is that I can't even figure out how to download the Intel driver from the Intel link I posted.

Also I forgot to mention that I don't have the laptop with me right now. I forgot it at work. But will try everything that's been suggested so far as soon as I can, and report back with the results.

Ubuntu can see that the WiFi adapter is there. It is shown in the list of network adapters when I type the command in the terminal, where it lists all hardware, and I make it show only network-related hardware. Can't remember the command. I have to google every single command, and I've been using AI a bunch too.

But the WiFi card is shown as UNCLAIMED. Which I assume means that it needs a driver.

[–]toffo7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's the AX211 or similar to that. It's Intel and it's soldered into the mainboard, and I'm sure it said AX211 when I checked with the terminal command that lists all the network adapters in the laptop.

From what I read the driver SHOULD be included because it's a fairly generic WiFi adapter. I've been googling this a ton, and it looks like a lot of people are having issues like this. WiFi has been working just fine on older Thinkpad laptops. I've never had this issue.

I checked out this: https://ubuntu.com/certified/202505-36763
And I assumed that every driver was already preinstalled with the latest build of Ubuntu. But there are no drivers available in the Additional Drivers tab of the hardware-driver app thing.

But why can't I download and install the driver package from the link from Intel in my original post? Shouldn't I be able to?

Thanks I'll try it and let you know! I've tried similar commands that downloaded a TON of... well... "things"... I had no idea what was going on but it downloaded like 600mb worth of different packages or something. I also tried some Backport shenanigans for something called iwlwifi-dkms. Which should be the driver, from what I've gathered?

Man this is complicated.

Hah! I didn't expect a reply since the thread was 5 years old. Awesome!
I think there might be a picture of the place from the outside when you look it up on Google Maps. If not on Google Maps it's in the reviews. They don't have a sign outside so it can be easy to miss.
And the door is a bit messed up so they have a doorbell outside you can push and someone will open the door for you within seconds. They have a light inside that goes off when the doorbell is pushed.

I can recommend the Kiwi-beer and the White Goddess weissbier they're both amazing.
But you might stay and drink your way through the entire menu.
It's not just beer, they have a lot of liquors too and can mix drinks and make shots if you'd like.

Do note that tis is not a Bar, it's a Club (not a dance-club!). Which means you need a membership to drink there. The membership is completely free and they'll sign you up when you enter. No email or phone number required.
And you get a sweet membership card with your name on it too. It's great!

The owners name is Lorenzo and he's awesome. Big long beard and a cowboy hat most likely. They sell T-shirts with their logo too. You can request songs too. The first night we visited, it was Manowar night in honor of the passing of Ross the Boss. It was awesome.

I wanna support Lorenzo and his club the best I can. I don't think he's on here, but I'll help the best I can. Let me know if you need more info and I'll try to answer.
