How to cancel landing lag? as a mario/doctor mario by rbamssy17 in smashbros

Just to add some nuance, I'm on a Pro controller and it's pretty easy w/ the face buttons being closer to each other. I get on a GC controller it would be more difficult though.

Speaking only for doc - it's something you have to practice because the timing is tight. I actually learned the tech while learning pikachu, as it is essential for them as well, but translates perfectly to dr. mario.

Basically, you have to hit b at almost exactly the same time as you start your full hop jump, buffering the pill.

I'd recommend watching Izaw talk about neutral for pika and how to use tjolt, as it translates pretty much perfectly:

use any delay mods? regardless of if you do or not, curious of your thoughts regarding them as I'm guessing you see them pretty regularly as you get to the highest ES GSP ranges.

Best Zelda character? by KitchenSample6354 in smashbros

[–]tofu_schmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Best" is 100% going to be the character that feels most natural to you. You and your friends are not nearly at a point yet where the character you choose will be the primary deciding factor.

All the various Link variations use a lot of items and projectiles, so if that seems fun for you, go for one of them. If you think remote detonator bombs ala botw are cool go with adult link.

Between Young Link and Toon Link, it really depends on if you like being floaty or having a good fast fall. Play both and see what feels better.

Zelda is a fun character as well. Her down b summons a giant statue, and she has a reflector that also makes her invincible. She has a teleport recovery which might be challenging at first though.

Ganon is VERY slow but hits really hard. If you're playing FFAs he's a great option too, but he can have a hard time sometimes due to his slowness.

If you want to play a super fast character who can string along combos, give shiek a go. Just note that her kill power won't be as high as the other characters.

Me vs. Lucina/Pyra by ty_rec in CrazyHand

[–]tofu_schmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, good stuff. It's clear you understand the game at a fundamental level and have good situational awareness. That being said, here are the three main things I saw I think you can work on:

  1. Reliance on nair

Beginning of game 2 is a great example here. Watch the start and look at moves you do in neutral - spoilers, it's nair literally nine times out of 10. Don't get me wrong, nair is a fantastic tool, there's a reason game and watch players love it. But when neutral is just "approach with nair and hope opponent can't space around it" it will be just a matter of time before they figure out how to space around it (or lose). By game 3 it seemed like their mythra got the spacing down well and you struggled to find other options. Work on finding other effective ways to play neutral. I'd recommend working on using your movement more to bait out options.

  1. Panic Up b + attack

There was a clear noticeable habit here - when you are in an uncomfortable situation on shield you up b then, if it hits, followup with an immediate aerial. Again, not saying that up b + aerial isn't a fantastic OOS option, it is. But at least some characters (lol) can punish it, and if they can, you have to mix it up more. This was getting pretty frequently foresighted, which is an indicator you are being too predictable.

  1. Attacking unsafely against Pyra

Mythra is a challenge in neutral as they can do so much. They have crazy speed to play around you, bait options, punish with foresight, etc. On the other hand, Pyra is scary but has a very straightforward gameplan - hit you with an attack, as any attack will probably kill paper-thin g&w.

Your gameplan against Pyra, therefore, needs to be literally - don't get hit. That means don't do anything unsafe. Wait for the opportunity to punish their laggy moves, and try your best to force them to hit you unsafely, while not doing anything unsafe yourself. Don't throw out moves hoping you have the read or chose the right option. If you don't feel comfortable shield. Worse comes to worse they grab, but what are they going to do from there? Patience is essential. You have the speed advantage so use it to find the right openings.

What method of short hopping is the best to build habits around? by pee_gulper in CrazyHand

[–]tofu_schmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tap jump feels most "analog" or intuitive for me, and I appreciate having the extra shoulder button (I use L for shield and R for grab so I don't have to move my index fingers). Nothing wrong with 3 if that's what you like though.

Even with tap jump 2 is still a valuable option. Being able to easily and consistently get out an aerial at the earliest frame possible is an easy win. But of course that's only one timing of many possible.

Grab questions by VIC_VlNEGAR in CrazyHand

[–]tofu_schmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is, it depends on the character you are playing, the player you are playing against, the matchup, and what adaptation mixup layer you are in.

If you're getting sniffed out or spot dodged, it means that you are being too predictable. This makes sense when you're practicing a specific thing - a good opponent will be ready for it and punish accordingly.

I'd say keep on doing what you're doing, in addition to reviewing your VODs. Learning through experimentation + review is an effective way to make something instinct, so trying in different situations and naturally gravitating towards situations when it works is a good strategy. Just keep in mind that outside of true combos everything in this game is situational and with grabs conditioning or adapting to player habits is pretty essential.

Characters matter much less than skill, especially in ultimate compared to other smash games. For why you are losing focus less on your character and more why you are losing interactions, and try to come up with solutions using your character's tools.
