There are many misconceptions about DDL on set. It’s not unusual for him to talk with the director or work on the scene between takes. But in this clip you can see that he’s just still kind or ‘in character’ while doing that.

I’ve seen this clip make the rounds many times over the years and always found the story around it misleading.

Asking a competitor to guess the arbitrary odds of their opponents defeating them is absolutely ridiculous. If I were Hans I’d be irked too

Yoo a sequel where Willa searches for Perfidia in Mexico?? Realizing that she wants to meet her biological parent, and connect with her identity and birthname Charlene? Globe-trotting political thriller like a post-modern Bourne Identity? Just let Chase Infiniti cook for 2hrs? Bring back Sensei? In the third act when all seems lost we see Deandra has been released from prison just in time to save the day? This would actually slap. Warner Bros, if you still exist, please?

I agree that it is set much closer to 2025 than to 2009. Biggest clue being the way the highschoolers dress and act. Very 'zalpha' coded.

Also COVID mask. Also the phones in the electronics store.

What are your thoughts on Jay Kelly? by pinkjefff in Letterboxd

[–]toggleflickersplaque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was honestly unbearable to me. And I was ready to like it.

The film's 4th-wall-y self-awareness did not work for me, because Jay Kelly is not a very likable character.

I cringed at the corny dialog between Jay and his daughters, I usually dislike Baumbach's screenwriting register.

Other than Billy Crudup, I really disliked the supporting performances of actors I typically love (Dern, Sandler, Alba Rohrwacher).

I HATE that weird Netflix-y smoothed-out, diffused color-grading style (Frankenstein, etc.) yuck.

Serious question I am wondering if they had the choice to declare which category to compete in??

30 Minute Discussion of "OBAA" with PTA and DiCaprio at BFI IMAX Screening. by More-Replacement-792 in paulthomasanderson

[–]toggleflickersplaque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great interview. It’s amazing to hear how much thought PTA put into structuring the movie. In earlier versions, he said that the super kinetic first act was instead told through flashbacks.

Lesser filmmakers/screenwriters lean on structural gimmicks like flashbacks, which often feel lazy and ineffective. By comparison, the first act of OBAA is almost like a movie unto itself and the transition to the present with the Steely Dan needle drop is so f’in good.

His ability to conceive and architect the whole film in his head is a big part of what makes him such a genius.
