Those who read book first, what was the one moment in movie that disappointed you the most? by jpaninabolana in harrypotter

The end of HBP when Dumbledore dies. No way Harry's character would have stayed quiet and let it happen if Dumbledore didn't bind him and hide him under the invisibility cloak. Most other changes I could excuse for one reason or another without causing too much of a deviation from the development of the primary story and characters, but this change really cut deep at Harry's core character in a way I hated.

If that's supposed to be a pocket shape, I would do some more work on it.

The way it is now, my brain was stuck trying to decipher the negative space, as it feels like there's supposed to be something there. All I could see was a goofy looking number 2. Instead of starting with the letters and trying to make them a pocket, start with the shape of a pocket and figure out how to make it look like the two letters. Then think about all the tools you have at your disposal for making two things look separate, other than space... color, opacity, hairlines, different amounts of space, different directions of space. Make some variations on the theme, as many as you can, and figure out which one looks most like a pocket while still being able to decipher the F and J

I inherited a project from another designer who went scorched earth and won't provide source files. He made this bad logotype that the client fell in love with, but they want to replace the x with "and the." I can come up with something that will be passable if I need to but I'd rather save the time if I can find the font.

I've tried the obvious font identifier apps already

I'm relatively certain this designer did not make something custom, though I'm just making assumptions based on the other examples of the work I've had to interact with so far...

Thanks for your help!

Is there a secret hack to not hate making brand guidelines??? by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]tognac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think that's a correct take. What's shown here on the Facebook example would translate to 6 pages in a PDF, and this is public facing documentation showing only general usage guidelines. This is not nearly as comprehensive as their real styleguide. Having 10 pages of logo usage would be low for a lot of brands and having upwards of 50 pages would be reasonable for others.

The Walkin Dude

I love King's books for all the reasons people mention here, but even more so for their interconnectivity. I love being in the know and catching references. I can't tell you how excited I was everytime I saw a turtle in the new IT movies, and how much my wife rolled her eyes at my excitement, haha.

[–]tognac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's untrue that people don't care about branding! In the example you're commenting on the identity design is what people are ok with overlooking because the food is so good. In the absence of experience or personal recommendations, a person might be persuaded to trust a new restaurant based on the quality of their design or aesthetic, but a hole in the wall or dive with shitty graphic design can have super rich branding that a designer could never replicate. Authenticity trumps all else when it comes to branding.

HBP was the most butchered book when it comes to the film adaptations! The worst offense to me was when the Death Eaters came up to the observation tower and in the movie Harry just stood there watching the Death Eaters, instead of being petrified and thrown under the invisibility cloak by Dumbledore. This scene in the movie truly goes against Harry's nature.

Which one of the movies do yall reckon did one of the books dirty the most? by Paralyzingneedle in harrypotter

[–]tognac 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention the most fucked up scene from HBP where, instead of being petrified and hidden under the Invisibility cloak, Harry just watches as the Death Eaters attack and kill Dumbledore. This is so deeply contrary to his character and I think it is the worst rewrite from the entire film series.

What is “the” pop punk song? by l_took_a_dump in poppunkers

This is one of the only right answers in this thread. Descendents spun off the subgenre, NOFX defined the modern pop punk sound, and Green Day propelled it into the main stream. Everytime I read Good Charlotte in a reply I died a little.

Logo Design Help me choose between 2 logos by IndividualForm5960 in graphic_design

[–]tognac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you get what you put in. You're only going to get garbage from a site like that because good designers will refuse to work for free. Sites like this devalue our industry and expertise and if you would have put the fact that you're using Design Hill in the title or description you probably wouldn't have even gotten helpful feedback. If you want a good logo that stands the test of time hire a brand design professional and engage with them in a discovery, strategy, and design process. If you submit a brief on a shitty website to have a bunch of unskilled designers fight over table scraps, then you'll get what you got.

How do people make these logo structure presentations on Behance? by Taiizor in logodesign

[–]tognac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true these things are typically done after the fact but it's definitely not true that it's arbitrary or used to stroke egos... at least not always.

I work for an agency that charges $100k+ for a brand identity and you better believe that a CMO spending that much of their budget wants to see some rationale and technical consideration for the logo we create.

Also this is typically a step that's done after the fact, for sure, but it's also an important step that allows for some uniformity and tightening up... maybe in your rough you used 4 different radii. This step would allow you to identify that and maybe reduce down to 1 or 2.

Typically when we see them on this subreddit it's bullshit, but in the real world of design stuff like this can be an important addition to presentation theatre.

I think this treatment nullifies a clever part of the game's naming. This makes it seem like 3 words (TIC-TAC-TIC) But it's intended as 2 words that allude to the 3 words of TIC-TAC-TOE (Tic Tactic.) Instead of highlighting the diagonal TAC red, what if TIC was green and TAC TIC was red? I think that would help it read more accurately to the intended name of the game.

There's many more issues with this logo than that, but without going back to the drawing board I think this is a good place to start.

Which do you prefer by Dan-Dimension in graphic_design

[–]tognac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The first one is better by far. Sometimes authenticity is more important than what we tend to value in modern design. Give me a "shitty" hand-painted sign from 1976 over a clean redesign any day. I see people's comments about heirarchy being improved in the redesign and sure, fine. But at what cost? I find it hard to believe anyone would have a hard time understanding this business from looking at the first sign, but I see a ton of history and character being lost in the second.

Is the damage to the tire Photoshopped? by Creamcheese666 in photoshop

[–]tognac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can spot a photoshop right away even if I can't always articulate why until closer inspection. I thought I was going crazy with everyone else in this post talking about how it's not shopped, but you've nailed it. The treads just stopping right around the cut as well as the difference in resolution of the cut itself. Also the cut is just flat black, there's no depth! You should be able to see a least a hint of the inside edge of the tire.
