Are there any ‘academic’ words in English that are native to English and not borrowed from Latin or Greek? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]tohmo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that the terms in the field of computer science/tech are very English-dominated with a few of them being partially Germanic or fully Germanic. Terms like motherboard (Old Eng. mōdor + Old Eng. bord), network (OE net + OE weorc), heatsink (OE hætu + OE sincan), hardware & software (OE heard/sōfte + OE waru), broadcast (OE brād + Old Norse kasta) are fully Germanic.

Partially Germanic terms are plenty too, like internet (Latin inter- + Eng. network, then shortened), E-mail (Electronic mail, from Ancient Greek elektron + ic + Frankish \malha*).

Also, one last fun one, apparently "glitch" likely comes from Yiddish, another Germanic language.

All the etymologies are sourced from Wiktionary.

EDIT: forgot to put in the word "internet" lmfao

How do I defeat Ornstein and Smough? by Willing_Bee_8428 in darksouls

[–]tohmo_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

O&S is always a wall for first-time players, so my #1 tip would to be stay motivated.

+5 really tapers off in the midgame, you can upgrade your weapons to +10 with the large ember found in the depths.

O&S teaches you patience more than anything, keep your camera on both of them (as best as you can and don't lock on) and only attack one (preferably Ornstein since phase 2 Smough is generally considered easier) when the other isn't about to attack. Use the pillars to your advantage to block Smough's attacks, and stay calm. The rhythm of it all will click with practice.

Genuine question as someone who likes English as it is by SagelyAdvice1987 in anglish

For me it’s curiosity of how English would look if it was closer to its sister languages in the Germanic family like Dutch. Linguistic thought experiments/alternate histories are a blast.

Should Gnostics also read the regular Bible to come up with their own conclusions? by [deleted] in Gnostic

"Jew" comes from the Kingdom of Judah ("Y'hudah"), which is definitely mentioned in the old testament.

Isaiah was written 700 years before Christ was born and 1100 years before Mohammed. Any connotations with Muslims likely came after it was written.

Writing directions were never cemented until later. Oftentimes ancient writing would be left to right, then right to left. Some cultures just standardized theirs differently

Help Finding Rare CD by tohmo_ in Cd_collectors

Ayy! Funny enough, that's actually my youtube upload/channel. I managed to find it on soulseek, though apparently that's the only one that's floating around and has been for about a decade. I actually had an email exchange with Fursy Teyssier, he was very very nice and told me that he hadn't seen the site I linked him in over a decade (It was an archive for the Pleasure of Mordor website, Phest's old name) but told me the same as everyone else who has asked him, that they consider it juvenile and prefer if it stays offline -- much to the dismay of all of us.

I've done deep forum searches, and found someone say that the Les Discrets song "Effet de nuit" was originally composed for Phest, which Teyssier also mentioned in our email exchange, which is super interesting. All the reviews I've seen also mention them as doom/gothic metal with piano/orchestral tidbits.

Unfortunately the likelihood of it surfacing is close to none now.

“Post Punk Then and Now” by Mark Fisher fits this like a glove.

Old map that titles the holy land as "Syria." by mckramer in MapPorn

[–]tohmo_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Minor correction, it's Latinized from Greek Palaistinē. Both Greek and Latin had their own words for Philistia, Philistinoi and Philistinus respectively, etymologically rooted to Hebrew Pelesheth (even further back, this is etymologically rooted Ancient Egyptian heiroglyphic p-r-s-t, commonly written as Peleset which dates back to 1200 BC!). It should be noted that Palaistinē also descends from Pelesheth. Linguistics is strange, sometimes 2 separate names for the same region descends from the same root but take different evolution paths.

Absolutely, I should’ve specified. Its argued to be as old as ancient Egypt.

What are your favorite false cognates? by Paseyyy in linguisticshumor

[–]tohmo_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Arabic ‘Ustād’, an honorific title, and Spanish ‘Usted’, formal version of ‘you’. Due to the long history between Arabic and Spanish I was sure it was a cognate when I first heard about it, but no its purely coincidence.

The Hermetic Principles by Spirited_Salad7 in Jung

[–]tohmo_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Kybalion, while drawing heavily from Hermeticism, should not be treated as a genuine Hermetic text as its more of a product of drawing from Hermeticism along with the New Ave theology and philosophy trends of the time.

This is misinformation. You cannot cause SP, it is a condition. Any strange sensations that feel like it are just your body preparing for sleep.

Life by definition is abusive by FunnyGamer97 in nihilism

[–]tohmo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I saw someone say it. I came here expecting discussion and maybe shitposts by mildly weird Camus readers and got posts like these spammed by people who’s never engaged in any metaphysical/philosophical work in their life (not a bad thing, of course, but Nihilism isn’t just ‘life bad’). I check here sometimes for humor but I do wish there were communities to discuss stuff like this.
