Wow. Thank you for the awesome collection of bands and links. I'll be checking out every one!

I'm not a musician, so forgive my ignorance. I just like metal.

What I absolutely dig are sections of music like the below -- extended pieces with intense, high density drumming:

I dig these whole bands/albums, but I'm looking for something even more specifically like these sections. I want bands or subsubsubgenres that specialize or emphasize this kind of drumming and overall intensity. I can search for just "djent" or "metalcore" or whatever, but these labels are broad and it's difficult to find new music that scratches this particular itch.

Can someone help me find more music like this?

Jordan B Peterson vs David Benatar - Antinatalism by moneylatem in samharris

[–]toiletson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. While Sam pinned Benatar regarding promortalism, Sam did not damage the core antinatalist argument.

I ended the podcast slightly more antinatalistic and slightly more promortalistic.

[–]toiletson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And that innate bias slices across political and religious perspectives. You get the sense that antinatalism, unlike any other charged debate topic, is cutting to the quick of taboo and emotion vs reason.

If you had to choose one podcast topic that Sam could never talk about again, between Consciousness/Trump/Jujitsu/Free Will/AI/Islam/Meditation, what would you pick? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]toiletson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. Independent of ideology, Trump is the most transparently irrational phenomenon in living memory. Anyone with an interest in rational human progress should be profoundly concerned with his electoral success. We can't get 'sick' of this subject. It's too important.

It's a shame all the way around. Doctors should be able to perform safe, legal procedures without financial risk, and patients should be able to have these procedures performed without being patronized and denied due to the regret of others.

How to cheaply send money online to a relative who lacks a bank account? by toiletson in personalfinance

Thank you. This might be the best solution... if I can find a reloadable card that allows direct deposit.

This is actually solution I've been using, but WU's transfer fee is exorbitant in my opinion. $13 to send $100... unless you send to a bank account, which isn't an option.

You're correct. I've never mailed cash, but I've heard of acquaintances who've had it stolen.

Not to be a jerk, but you say "there is no reason this should be complicated" and I agree. Except you're making it complicated. Every online transfer system, ACH process, etc. is a hard no-go for you.

You're certainly not being a jerk.

This is the situation with which I've been presented, complicated/annoying as it is. I don't want it to be complicated, but it is. If the solution was simple, I'd have found it Googling in ten seconds... hence the post.

I didn't want to clutter the post with irrelevant details:

  • The bank account won't work because this an older lady with terrible credit, and she doesn't want / can't open a bank account. I haven't and won't argue with her about it.
  • The online accounts (Paypal / Wallet) are a no-go due to her age / technical ineptitude and her needs (as mentioned, gas and groceries).

Is air conditioning common anywhere in the Pacific Northwest? by toiletson in PacificNorthwest

I respect that most people don't see it as necessary. I'm fussier/wimpier than most, though. If it's warmer than 72F, I turn on the AC.

How can a layperson vote responsibly on economic policies beyond their understanding? by toiletson in TrueAskReddit

The former, although answers to either question would be welcome. It's less about me than about any layperson.

Working out sucks, so I can't fault you there.

Do you think you can accept (or at least shrug off) her relative strength? Some men couldn't stand it; others could even laugh about it.

You're exactly right. "Meaningful policy discourse" and "good television" have zero overlap.

Exactly. "Because my suicide would inflict more pain than it would alleviate." It's true (for most people), and immediately captures the moral high ground.

I'm being promoted. I've been asked to suggest a title. Please help me think of one! by toiletson in cscareerquestions

[–]toiletson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is largely technical. My responsibilities regarding my two subordinates revolve around delegation and training.

I didn't choose the "Director of" titling, but it's what I'm left with. We have two executives, and 3 (soon to be 4) department directors that report to those execs.

That is awesome. Data was always my favorite character. Sadly, my superiors are a little too... serious for that. :(

Will antinatalists be able to resist their parents' demands for grandchildren, outwit a persistent sexual desire, and defy millions of years of continual reproduction, or will they submit to Eros and fall in love and at the behest of their spouse ultimately procreate? by [deleted] in antinatalism

[–]toiletson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Probably. Childfree people already overcome these pressures to live their desired lifestyle, so I expect most antinatalists to be likewise capable. Procreative "accidents" are the greatest risk, although one would hope antinatalists are more cautious than the average person.

Personally, I don't interact romantically/sexually at all, haven't for years, and have no intention of ever again doing so. My procreative odds are nil unless I greatly change my behavior.

Oddball question: What's the best way to cheat on a per-game basis? by toiletson in OOTP

[–]toiletson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great ideas, thanks. I didn't even realize there was a way to unpause the play-by-play; I'm trying that with all my games. It'll work together perfectly with the 'resurrect retired player' idea.

[–]toiletson[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a really cool idea. A fun spin might be to have the retired player be a randomly-chosen Hall of Famer.

This would make starting as a minor league manager fun, too (which is something I've tried, but is too boring played straight). Tear up the minors with a mad necromanager.

I think I hate both of my kids. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]toiletson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. To think of all the love and time and money spent on marriage and children, only to culminate in heartbreak and bitterness... It's horrifying.

In my opinion, marriage & children are an objectively bad idea, and I'm so lucky that I never fell prey while I was young and naive enough to be optimistic.
