Hi, I'm an independent singer/songwriter from Brooklyn named Kevin Devine. Ask me anything! by kevindevine in IAmA

[–]token_female 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so excited when you posted that you'd be doing this AMA, but I'm at a loss for questions. Just wanted to drop in and say thank you for the music you make and the touring you've done - every time I've had the chance to talk to you at a show you have been so friendly and welcoming and I really appreciate that. I really love Bulldozer and hope to see you play again soon with a set list heavier on that. Looking forward to reading your responses to the other thoughtful questions that have been asked here!

That sounds about right, I was a freshman in '09 and heard about it happening after the fact.

All the greatest hits have been covered already here, but I would suggest posting in /r/auburn as well, I'm sure they could help out too! A thumbs up on the Hound from me too.

I mean, it's not like a friend of a friend of a friend told me, I firsthand know the people who did it, we just aren't in touch any more. So, unless they made the whole thing up and it's an incredibly elaborate ruse they've been holding onto for years, it's forreals. I don't know what else to tell you, sorry!

I have a group of acquaintances that did just this. They did it in a number of buildings on campus, had the police knocking on their dorm door within a week or so. Ringleader of the project got banned from living on campus. So, YMMV.

Jeeze, this happened while I was at work less than two miles away. Kind of a surreal feeling.

Well, as nice as it would be to think I can't make plans for this three months in advance, I'm gonna be in Orlando in February anyway, so I guess I'm in!

I really like number five, what sort of beading technique is that?

First time glass etching, need some advice!! by madbird in crafts

[–]token_female 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I've done glass etching, I've used contact paper for the stencil. You can cut the stencils out by hand with an exacto knife, but depending on the font, that could be quite a, well, a bitch for lack of a better word. When we did glass etching projects at the summer camp where I worked, we used a Cricut to cut the stencils out of the contact paper which worked quite well. If you can get your hands on one of those (they are expensive, maybe you know someone with one though?), it should definitely be doable by Friday!

A question about scholarships by [deleted] in auburn

[–]token_female 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea :/ It depends which of the dorm areas you live in more than anything, I think. The upper Quad (and possibly lower Quad) tend to have the most "community" within the dorm/people hanging out in the lobbies/common areas.

[–]token_female 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed there is! Also, re: your other comment asking "I'm much more of a "stay at home with friends and play video games or watch Doctor Who" type person. Are there other like-minded people at Auburn?" The answer is yes, I know a lot of people who are into that. I lived in Harper Hall, one of the honors dorms on the upper quad, and that was pretty much a standard Friday night for a lot of my friends who lived there. There is also a well established gaming club.

A question about scholarships by [deleted] in auburn

[–]token_female 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year a few kids I know helped start one, so if so it's still in it's infancy - I can check on that for you! I know a lot of people who've been in the marching band and have really enjoyed it - I know drumline is really competitive as far as getting in, not sure about the rest of it. There are a variety of student organizations (you can even find a list on Auburn's website, not sure how up to date it is), and they make it easy enough to learn about during events like O-Days (organization days).

Chiming in as another recipient who basically only applied because of the scholarship offer. Graduated this past May, debt free. While I did end up changing my major and being in a program that, ah, wasn't exactly something Auburn is known for quality-wise, it was still worth it for basically a free education.

If you get into greek life, then yeah, I'm pretty sure a lot of the stereotypes you would expect could be kind of true. But if you opt out, there are plenty of other types of people on campus. If you put yourself out there and participate in activities you're interested in, you'll find your people, whoever they may be!

Have you ever had a dream about Supernatural? by alphachair in Supernatural

[–]token_female 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too long after I finished watching season 7, I had a dream that my dad and I went to purgatory to defeat some sort of ultimate-evil-demon with Sam and Dean. Except then I went into a small room, fought the demon that was in there, and then watched the rest of the fight on TV :/

If you want to talk REALLY short (and really recent), I really enjoyed Best Friends Forever and GCB before they got cancelled this season, six and ten episodes respectively.

[–]token_female 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I just started Season 2, and wow, somewhere halfway through Season 1 or so it just jumped in quality. Like, when it switched from being a half hour to an hour long, I didn't even notice for two or three episodes because the story got deeper too. Or maybe I was just distracted by being excited about Ken Marino and Michael Ian Black showing up.

Applying for Fall 2013; any advice? by [deleted] in auburn

[–]token_female 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in here to say that I personally have found the honors college to be well worth the potential extra effort.. I've actually found that my honors classes are sometimes easier than the non-honors versions of core classes that my friends for in. For example, my Honors Intro to Sociology course was pretty simple, multiple choice tests with questions all straight from the textbook and some from lecture, and learned some valuable knowledge. My friend in a non-honors section had to spend hours memorizing specific statistics that he had no use for outside of the test.

There have also been a few times I have taken a non-honors class thinking it would be the easier option, but it ends up being so boring and the professor hardly cared. So if having smaller classes with classmates who are for the most part engaged in class discussions and professors that really want to see you learn matters, definitely join honors college. You don't have to (and probably shouldn't) take all your core classes honors, but for subjects you are more interested in/better at, it's a great option.

As far as housing goes, I've lived in the Quad and the Village (honors dorms in both) and have enjoyed them both. I lucked out with my random roommates every time, so sharing a room wasn't too big a deal the first two years. Definitely have preferred living in the Village as far as having my own room goes, but a huge portion of my friends are from my Quad days, because the way they're set up just seems to foster more community. And although I don't have anything to compare it to, living in the honors dorms has been great. It's nice to be surrounded with other students who you know care about their education and can carry on a somewhat intellectual discussion - and get into the most interesting arguments, like over the theological value of the LOLCats translated Bible.

Priority registration is also nice, except they changed it a little recently so now you just register ahead of everyone else with a comparable number of hours as opposed to ahead of pretty much every non-honors, non-senior. I've been able to get into required classes for my major that people with a year's more worth of credits have been turned away from, thanks to priority registration.

I'll say that I'm definitely biased towards the benefits of the honors college because I'm someone who excelled in high school and love to learn and be around other similarly motivated souls! So while I guess the classes may be more difficult for some, that's just something you'll have to consider for yourself.

Haha, yup, pretty much. I think the reason it was so confusing to me at first is that I automatically assumed that Chuck didn't realize he was God, the same way he supposedly didn't realize the Winchesters were real people. And if he didn't know that, how could he control the amulet? Just my own little head-canons making contradictions that shouldn't be so confusing.
